Video Out: I Made Songs From Your Instagram DMs

I want to know your thoughts! I'm really proud of it :)

How did you feel about the format? Did you watch all the way through? Is it too many short songs? Would you rather have one long one? Are the visuals interesting enough?

Just tryina figure out how to do it even better! Really proud of it

Video Out: I Made Songs From Your Instagram DMs

Comments

I really liked the video as it is, the concept! The variety of songs, and although I liked the “do do do” song best at first the Minecraft song has really grown on me! All positive feedback here. I am hopeful the view count will steadily grow!

Brandt

Personally I wasn’t offended or anything like that by the title 😁 But if I were the new viewer, I wouldn’t click the video that calls someone stupid. There are plenty of English words with kinda the similar meaning but less harsh(if I can say so 😅): silly, foolish, dorky etc. And btw I didn’t pay attention to the words “handfart etc” on the thumbnail at all so it’s probably a matter of perception 🤷🏻‍♀️

Helga 🦊

I loved the concept!! I wished that the songs were longer, and that you could have talked more about the songs. Maybe you could have done a skit between the songs. Awesome job with your singing, enjoyed the video.😊👍💖🎶

Bookdragon 43

I flippin loved all of it—the songs, the short clips of them, the video editing (EPIC), and the voice growliness—yes please more of this. 😊❤️

Ousht

You’re mistaken, Mr. Official 😅 Your personality in the videos and humour made me stick to your channel at first despite me being not a fan of pop music at all 🫣 Then I noticed your talent and the community. But everything started with a strong/silly/adorkable personality 😁 I definitely agree with Jessi that some people don’t have that much time anymore as they had during pandemic so it’s nice to have at least an approximate idea (once/twice a week/month/year 🫣) when a video is gonna be uploaded 😅

Helga 🦊

Here's another one 🍪 for your 2nd ☕

Your cookie goes well with my morning coffee 😄

Helga 🦊

I loved the concept. But I think the songs were a bit short. Would've been fun to have them a bit longer. Seeing you're personality more might help too! Like when you laughed while listening to the concept for "I'm good with my hands". 😅 Overall, I would love to see more of these!

Courtney Walker

I think everyone has expressed what I was going to say. Thumbnail, title, shortness, not enough Joel personality. I enjoyed the songs but not so much the video itself. Plus, I need more silly faces to make memes. 😉 I had expected some talking or little skits between songs. I was happy for some of the creative edits that I expect Jonas provided. Take advantage of cross media promotion to drive more viewers. This is a learning experience. Looking forward to the next video.

Cas

I've enjoyed reading through the other Patrons' comments with my coffee, and the early birds/night owls have already brought up many good suggestions, so I'll try not to repeat too much. I think the concept and execution were great, however I tend to gravitate towards longer more "talky" videos. The the solely music based videos I'll watch all the way through once, but typically don't come back to them. (I'm also not someone who seeks out MVs anymore, even from my fav artists) Whereas the longer ones I'll return to, have on in the background etc. This one might feel too short, and really like it was made exclusively to be cut up into shorts to some. (ik there's prob business reasons) but kinda get the feeling it could've just been released as shorts in the 1st place. In this strange era where video content "works" if it's under 30secs or over 10mins, so now a YT video in the 3-5 min range feels out of place (to me at least). As others have mentioned, it's maybe missing that personality aspect. We can see you in the jokes you're making, in the faces you're pulling, etc but newcomers might not catch on to that. Coming off of the commentary/songwriting challenges for a few years, it a hard pivot back to "just" singing videos - even though that's where you started. That's farther back in viewers memories, if they've seen it at all. But! Don't let the views on one video discourage you! It's going to take time and consistency to figure out what works both for you and the almighty algorithm now. Sorry for rambling yet again 😅 Here's a cookie 🍪 if anyone's made it this far.

MediocreAtBest

I mean, the songs could go on shorts? You could put the "Just songs" version on Roomie Clips? But that does mess with view counts, so I get the dilemma. 🤔

Dannielle O'Neill

You did a great job. I watched it through a couple times was very entertaining.

Melinda Young

I really enjoyed it. The editing and production was great, the songs were catchy but maybe 15 seconds too short, and I loved the variety of songs. Really engaging. It just takes time for YouTube viewers to catch on to something different. Really awesome video. Only improvement I agree with is that there could be some quick talking transitions or video element to segue into the next song.

missysue4851

This was really cute. Ummm, I'm sorry but the hairstyle.....I need time. I'm glad you want to try something different. The video very entertaining, thank you so much.❤️❤️😘😘

Gayle

Yeah I don't get this 😅 I think it was Expired Coupon who put it really nicely in words in discord some time ago “your personality is your business card and the way you make others feel is your trademark!” I think that ur personality is the thing that gets people hooked! Plus of course the enormous amount of talent u have and the songs u make! I can imagine that balancing between making music and keeping up with the brutal social media algorithms is a constant struggle. People have shorter and shorter attention span when having to share their time in so many platforms and when there's so much content out there. Not an easy profession u have 😅 Must be frustrating to put so much time and talent to things and then algorithms being there to mess up with the views. I'm sure u will figure this out and u have a lot of support, people wanting u to succeed 😊💙 Sending big virtual hug, u got this 🫂

JustSomeJK

So considering I stopped in the middle of my work day to watch, this video was perfect. I thought it was really clever how even the intro and outro were songs. It's one of those that's going to be easy to rewatch because even if you don't have the brain power to fully pay attention, those melodies are there. Loved the editing and how you pulled it all together. We already knew the songs, but your expressions, the graphics, gave it that something more. I do feel like your personality came through (loved you trying not to laugh), but maybe that's because we "know" you. I can see where a longer video or more chatting could be more engaging, especially to attract new viewers. I do think it might be suffering from the algorithm and you not posting on a consistent schedule. Can I just say, you have a hard job. I love how you keep working to find ways to make it fun and interesting for you and us both. <3

Dorie

Watched the video twice, really enjoyed it but I feel like I spoilert myself with keeping up with the progress on here 🥴🤣 the editing and visual effects are very entertaining and looked like you put a lot of effort into it. I personally enjoy videos that are around 10-15min long, but I understand that would've been very hard to gather enough material for this one. As a European I had no trouble with the time of upload, got the YouTube notification at 9:21 pm, so early enough, even for someone like me who's living the grandma lifestyle 😉🤣✌️

Nataliekey

Just know that your content is always worth clicking, you are very likeable, funny and a great artist who is fighting the never ending trash YT seems to want to push. The whole YT algorithm is a nightmare, you can't engage with creators anymore because bots and fake verified accounts are rife in comments, it's not the platform it once was. I rarely look at my home page because it's trash, I go straight to my subscriptions so I can see if there is new content. Your creativity isn't the problem here, trust me, never link your confidence in yourself or the channel to clicks, you are way better than YT deserves! Xx

Clair (Teampanda)

I enjoyed watching the video in its entirety, and I would gladly do so repeatedly without the slightest hesitation. Each and every song featured therein was absolutely groovy, and I would be delighted to hear the full versions of each one, with the final piece undoubtedly capable of becoming viral. Furthermore, the visual effects were nothing short of cool. As for any improvements, if any, that could be made to the video itself, I wouldn't change a thing. In my view, the YT algorithm may have the greater impact on its exposure.

Ornela

I thought that the video and the concept "using DMs to make a song" was great. Watched it couple of times in a row. Which I guess in my case meant, that I really liked the songs a lot and it was a bit short and was left wanting more. I understand if u want the video to be shown in different platforms it has to be short and made in a certain way etc. I'm definitely not an expert on social media and how the algorithm works in different platforms. But I have liked the videos where u comment more about the stuff u have made or shown more of the making processes, and shown more of your personality etc. I guess I would have enjoyed seeing ur reaction when u hear the messages for the first time and then hearing in what way the message inspired u to make certain type of a song... I would have watched it till the end even if it would have had been 15min long.

JustSomeJK

I also think it may not be too helpful to ask us why people are not clicking. We're going to watch your videos no matter what. So trying to help with people who wouldn't normally click a video may not be too helpful

Lianne Conroy

I thought it was gonna be a plus/more watchable with less personality… lmao. Maybe I’ll have to rethink it. This video was a bot clouded in that I wanted to post these clips on tiktok/shorts too. But as long as I have thise clips I can have more talking on YT of course

Joel Berghult

Thank you ❤️ I just gotta keep iterating. I almost feel bad asking you guys for input since you’re not super familiar with the ins and outs of things, while I have done this for a decade lol. The things I’m certain of are that different formats, not uploading regularly, and videos being shorter will all lead to lower views, so I really shouldn’t be surprised. The rest of it is anyone’s guess. When I see it on my channel next to the reaction stuff it does look kind of out of place, sikce most of the channel nowadays isn’t centered around my creativity :) I would like to build cobfidence with the audience that the videos where I make stuff are worth clicking even more than the other stuff :)

Joel Berghult

If the first video of yours that I watched was solely music content, I don't think I would have kept watching your channel. But there was a lot of your sense of humor and personality in there and that is what made me want to keep watching you. You're excitement for what you are doing.

Lianne Conroy

Yeah maybe. Michael also has an entire persona around being angry/calling his audience stupid etc so there’s a difference in the entire thing. Also, it’s a different, more male audience

Joel Berghult

I think your click rate is low because Europe has only just woken up and weren't aware you were putting a video out! Because you aren't on a regular schedule at the moment it won't hurt to nudge people via social media that a video is incoming. The thumbnail could do with a "jokey hook" like "My IG followers sent me what......?" Etc just to create curiosity in what was sent. Aesthetically it's very pretty and you look 🔥 Your singing was *chefs kiss 😘* I noticed in the comments people digging your voice. Of course I watched it all the way through and twice, I'll probably watch it again later! The Doo Do Doo earworm has made me want a full version song! The content is great, if a little short for my liking, a couple extra minutes with a "Welcome I'm Joel aka Roomie Official aka Lil Pitchy aka Your Momma's best friend" would have stretched it out a bit. Also noticed you did the latest YT trick of not announcing the video is finished so the ad start and you can't click away until you know it's definitely finished lol... infuriating but I totally get it! Critique over ..... Be proud Joel, it's great, you're great, your plants are great, your tracksuit top is great, your hair looks great everything is 👍 ☺️😉xx

Clair (Teampanda)

I agree the said 2SICH video performed super well. About the video by Michael Reeves: It makes a difference whether you "hate" something (and the exaggeration already implies you don't) or if you judge something by calling it stupid (even though you don't really think it is stupid). I'm really speculating right now, but I think it makes you appear (!) less likeable if that's the first impression people get from you. I know these could really be minor details by now. There's probably lots of things that had a bigger impact.

Sarah

I feel that. It can also have the opposing effect of ”wait, this guy has a community? He’s interacting with them like that? This must be ’a thing’! If you get my drift. I wrote down a couple more titles I might try in the coming days or weeks, I might have rikard redo the thumb too

Joel Berghult

The length issue with YT videos must be frustrating. About the title: It needn't be clearer (since it's not misleading). I just think it makes the unsubscribed people seeing it get an unconcious idea of "I'm not the target group".

Sarah

Personality is interesting - it's one of the things I wrestle with. I wanted to put more of myself out there and that's why I put more of 'me' in the videos even when people straight up told me to 'stop talking' lol

Joel Berghult

consistency is a big thing. Just been trying to figure out the new direction while also making on music :) My experience is that both me and what I've seen on my channel 'fall out of habit of clicking someone's videos' easily. You know how you can be so into a TV series for a few months and then never watch it again? :P

Joel Berghult

Good points. Our inspiration for the video was a video that had a similar title, 'Guitar riffs but they're your voice messages' that did good for 2SICH. The audiences are a bit different though. The 'rude' angle came from tech guys' videos like Michael Reeves 'Your Robot Ideas Are Stupid'/'Hate Your Robot Ideas', also using 'you'. But this stuff is always trial and error. The length of my video might actually be one of the key problems. RE:title, I might try changing it to 'viewers'' or 'fans' to make it clearer, or something else

Joel Berghult

I'm definitely not a YouTube expert and please correct me if I'm wrong with this but I think the biggest problem is the inconsistency of uploads. You need a schedule to stay in the game and be present. Also, it's just a different time now compared to 3 years ago when everyone was forced to stay inside and was able to watch YouTube videos all day. I can imagine that the numbers of views/clicks where going through the roof during that time.. but that time is over and you're probably not the only Youtuber who struggles to get the clicks he wants. Have you tried connecting to others maybe? Figuring out what they're doing differently? And for the video itself: I don't like the title. I know that you don't mean it in an offensive way but calling the ideas of your fans stupid could come across as not very likable. Another thing, and this might be just me, but I think these short music videos doesn't show a lot of your personality. That's what I really liked about your commentary videos or the songwriting videos. Seeing you interact with people and hearing you talk about what makes you passionate. That's the Roomie I stayed for.

naschpanda

Hey. First of all, you can be proud of this video. Here's part of my ideas why the views aren't satisfying though. One problem might be the thumbnail. Unfortunately, it doesn't reach the quality of the typical ones you used to use. Your photo is a bit unflattering. The "Handfart predrop buildup" in the thumbnail is a bit of a risk. It sounds kind of funny to me, but I'm not sure if it makes an unsubscribed person click the video. As mentioned by others, the former titles including the word "stupid" were a bit insulting. Your fans didn't feel insulted (they know you), but the unsubscribed people might think "Why does this guy insult his audience?". The current title is still problematic. "I made songs from your instagram DMs" addresses only a small minority of your target group. Those who follow you on Insta and those who will watch anyway mostly overlap, I guess. I wouldn't put "you" in the title if "you" doesn't include every potential viewer (as in "Songs you almost forgot" etc.).

Sarah

Yeah not getting clicks because it's like a personal title and not a broad thing. Of course I watched the whole thing but I do like your commentary and would have loved to see you talk about or show a bit of how the songs came to be. And an upvote for all of her other suggestions too 😁

Sarah Reilander

I don't think the upload time would matter, honestly. I think it's an algorithm issue above anything else if you're having issues with getting clicks/visibility. I think advertising on other socials is a 50/50 if it'll bring people in or not. I wonder if it would have performed better as a short because of the length, tbh. I liked the video and thought the idea was really cool and you executed it well where the songs were funny, relatable, and super catchy. 💛

Mari

Sorry for more blabbing 😆 but the thumbnail wording should change. Like “your DMs, Omg” or a line from one of the songs & put the IG logo somewhere there so it’s a recognizable logo. If that makes sense 🫡😎 it needs to make ya feel noisy or curious to wanna clicky! 😅✨promise I’ll shut up now 🤣

Aubrey Danielle

Also, what Helena said would definitely be better

Miriam

I really liked the production on all the songs! Doo doo doo was a great finale (lol the the end 😐) I’m annoyed I didn’t get a notification for the video but I might have gotten one for the Short 😒 also, kinda agreeing here too, thinking the time might be a factor. From personal experience I would be more consistent catching something earlier in the morning rather than midday (California). I was gonna write something nerdy about time zones but I stopped myself. LOL basically maybe earlier time catches everyone everywhere better?

Aleece

Hmmm I would have to think about it, but maybe something that explains a bit more what it is about since it's not very clear from the title. Sorry I'm probably not being very helpful lol

Miriam

What title would you want for this?

Joel Berghult

Shouldn’t. But who knows :)

Joel Berghult

I might change it, just thought it was obvious it was comedic in the context :)

Joel Berghult

I can see the rude thing, it was supposed to be comedic since the thumb has hand farts in it

Joel Berghult

I thought it was really great and enjoyed the songs! I think as others mentioned, maybe changing the title and time it is uploaded might help?

Miriam

Something like “Turning Insta DMs into amazing songs”?

Shiny

Also, 😅 maybe while you are trying to figure out what else to create for youtube videos - get more Instagram sponsored posts! Like start posting behind the scenes of creating songs or a quick snapshot of your work flow or something to be more active on it. Even if it’s video game ads just for IG or something! Monetize / utilize your other platforms. You could even get a freaking coffee sponsor 😅 skies the limit! You could offer a brand a bundle of posting it on IG, TikTok, & youtube shorts! Just throwing out ideas 💡☺️✨

Aubrey Danielle

I’m also thinking about, you uploaded the video at noon. It seems like you usually upload at 8am. Do you think that have an impact?

Stephanie Bruso

In my objectively correct opinion, the video was great! Loved it. Wouldn’t change a thing :)

Expired Coupon

I loved it! I watched all the way through which was not hard to do with the content being so entertaining. The setup and editing were great. I know that others suggested a longer video but personally I felt for a concept like this, it being shorter fit well.

Becky Lorion

I thought it was really good, loved the concept! I think it’s just gonna be another trial and error situation in terms of clicks for example, the time of day that you decide to upload along with trying out different thumbnails and titles 😊 Just woke up singing Do Do Do Do Do so it’s definitely isn’t a content issue! 🙂

Jen 🦙

Sorry to spam the comments but I just got home from work and the video is not even in my recommended. Usually it just keeps recommending the same videos over and over even after I watch them. And maybe call it silly song ideas instead? Oh and the lighting looks much better as a video than it did as a still shot

Lianne Conroy

I liked that you couldn't keep a straight face 😅 that made me laugh.

Misty Gerkman

Maybe you could ask on Discord or join gen chat? That might people excited about the video.

Stephanie Bruso

Of course I watched it all the way through! I liked the songs, super catchy and fun. I have no idea how to get more YT clicks - maybe some more dialogue in between, maybe it needs to be longer - I’m not really sure. But I think the concept is good.

loonylovesgood

Thanks for your thoughts :)

Joel Berghult

It’s just my opinion and I might be mistaken of course but I think YouTube is a cruel place especially to creators who are inconsistent in their uploads. Algorithm forgets you, videos become irrelevant, and only those with higher views before may be recommended for watching. As for the current video I liked some things but I didn’t like some as well. Good things are: 1)the idea of the video, 2) the songs that you’ve written, 3) the editing. Things that I didn’t like: 1)the length of the video, 2) the title of the video (kinda rude), 3)no storyline in the video (jumping from song to song). Overall I can see the effort you’ve put in the final product, and I hope you will give this idea another chance (as part 2) later.

Helga 🦊

Algorithm is audience generally - I think a lot of the existing audience aren't used to this type of content. It's been mainly commentary for some time, and I've also been gone/not uploading. I know part of the solution is uploading more of these creative videos so people get used to them, just gotta figure out what else to do as well.

Joel Berghult

OMG, wait! That’s kinda genius to say making songs from my DMs 😂 my curiosity was like oooohhhh 😆

Aubrey Danielle

'Making songs from my dm's *emotional*'. Haha ok someone had to say it

x0_Kristin_0x

I would. I do prefer 15-20min videos

x0_Kristin_0x

I enjoyed it a lot. I thought it was a fun video to watch. One of my most enjoyed YouTube videos is ages. I liked that it was several shorter songs. I watched it to completion. Would this day of the week historically get more views? It's the Thursday before Good Friday here in Australia so kids are on school holidays & everyone is getting sorted for the Easter long weekend and the fact that shops will close tomorrow. I know it's not the same globally but at least for your Aussie viewers that will have had an impact. It's also 3om here so I'm sure some will be watching later when they finish work.

x0_Kristin_0x

Maybe the thumbnail could say “I’m good with my hands” and have a few different screenshots of you from that song because it was a funny reaction. It might spark more curiosity to click 🤔 Also, the title doesn’t really tell me what the video is about! Maybe more specific like “I made songs from fans IG voice messages” that gives me more insight on why I should click. (Even if I wasn’t a subscriber) maybe to make it longer next time (if you decide to do it again) you could show your *live* reaction to the fans voice messages and then what your thinking process is for the prompt and just little teasers of the process (kinda like the songwriting challenges) and then go into the song…this would take more work and energy though but the style of the songwriting videos was fun & more interactive. Even if it’s minimal, it’s still more connection level if that makes sense lol Sorry for the long-winded post 😂✨ overall, it was great but it’s your first time doing this style video? So, don’t be too harsh on yourself if it’s not going viral tomorrow lol you’re doing great! 😎✨

Aubrey Danielle

Ok… I’m gonna put some of my opinionated thoughts here.. everyone that has a problem can just roll their eyes and skip this please because he did ask… A few things I think could’ve helped the click rate: Promoted the video coming out *before* it came out throughout the social medias to people following would be ready for it. Keeping the usual upload time (7am pst) even though there never was a specific upload time.. it since there was a big break, people might have been more expecting it at that time instead of mid day (usa) And then uploading and promoting it across all your social at time of yt upload would love helped too I think the biggest problem is not everyone has notifications on and without a consistent schedule to be prepared for, you don’t actively check the channel for uploads unless told.

Airyckah Lane

I was going to say it was perfection. But if I think really hard… it might be fun to see more funny reacting about the memos you ended up using? But it was SO GOOD

emy

I’ll have a think. Better get back to what I’m doing, at work at present 😆

Shiny

Maybe put challenge in the title “IG song challenge”, I thought it was great, but did end quickly. I also think this one will grow in views over time, like singing duets, plus it’s a fun one to keep rewatching. I thought it was really fun :)

xtina 🖤

I don't know how similar I am to anyone else, but I tend to watch your videos more than once all the way through

Lianne Conroy

You did a great job, I guess algorithm is not really helping. Format was dinamic and songs were so good. Maybe people need to re-discover the channel?

Ave Castruita

Noooo not my thoughts 😅 because people aren’t seeing that it’s like og if they aren’t clicking to begin with

Airyckah Lane

Hmm I see! I was thinking people might not want much longer content than this

Joel Berghult

Super fun, I love it!! what an awesome voice

marlenies

Do you have any ideas for that? I think maybe the concept isn't super easy to sell, which means the concept should have been different hehe

Joel Berghult

I think the click part is mainly that it's not a broader concept. This is just for the OG:s I think

Joel Berghult

Lol I can see that. Just focusing :)

Joel Berghult

I could explain I guess, but that would make it less rewatchable, I was thinking :) I wonder if people would stick around for 15 minutes of this kinda pace, maybe

Joel Berghult

was surprised by how short it was. Maybe some people were sad there not in the video? I don’t know. Thanks for liking three of my comments today. It meant a lot.

Stephanie Bruso

I thought it was really good, I just wondered if it was called something different it might get more interest? I think the title underplays how clever the content is

Shiny

Truthfully? I didn’t get a chance to physically watch it watch it yet… just listen to it… and glance when I could. The songs were great though and this was very og roomie.. But that is not probably why people aren’t clicking… You’re saying that your click rate is low? Not your view to completion vs leaving early, right? I have thoughts 😅

Airyckah Lane

I liked all of it! It would have been fun to hear longer versions, but then you wouldn't have had time to do as many. You did look a little serious and sometimes bored though.

Sugary Magnolia

I liked it as is. With the few short songs. My only suggestion would be to make it a longer video maybe? Do people prefer 10-15 minutes videos better? Maybe explain the process making the songs?

Lianne Conroy

I’ve watched it all the way through twice! I like that it was several short songs, my attention span is loowwwww lol 😂
