Patreon Episode 39 - the Revisit you've all been asking for... (Video)

The Screen Rot Podcast is the show where we discuss the weirdest and worst content that's been rotting our screens and our minds. It's Monday Night football for internet rubbish.

This week we talk about: Tom Skinner. We aren't sure it's funny. We aren't sure that he won't kill us. But people had requested it so we did our best to talk about it.

An especially important reminder from us: Don't Grass.

I really recommend watching the panel on SpectatorTV that Skinner went on - he can't concentrate for more than 10 minutes, really shows that he'll be nothing to do with actual politics

Only recently joined the Patreon - really enjoyed this ep tbh and appreciate it's a shit show to talk about. The point you made about having mates around you to call you out if you go too far the either way I think is so important and not talked about enough. I'd like to think one of Skinners mates had a word after and he deleted it, which I see as a good thing he's got people around him to challenge his thoughts. Sometimes we need to accept people (especially in the social media era) will put shit out that's not great, but will hopefully row it back once someone close to them has had a word.

Jacob raised the right question I think which is ‘is this a normal person venting or is it by design’ - even if I disagree with his answer to it. Given Skinner’s growing connections with the radical right in this country (Farage, Jenrick, Cummings etc) and internationally (Vance), IMO it’s fairly clear that ‘phone call’ has happened. Someone has persuaded him he might be able to have a shot at being Mayor or at the very least that he is an asset to Reform. It’s really hard to see this stuff in good faith given who he spends his time with. Thanks for the episode anyway, slightly painful at times but this is the country we live in right now.

A comedy podcast is a difficult place for this discussion, as is the comment section of said podcast, but I think you missed a major point. You can’t analyse that tweet alone you have to take it in the context of Tom Skinner. His whole message that he’s continually pedalled is the general decline of the country without explicitly saying why he thinks this. That tweet finally put a face to his issue, the mask has slipped, and it reframes pretty much everything he’s ever put out. This is why he deleted it not because he had a change of heart but because he realised that (or more likely someone alerted him to it). And the reason why that message is inherently bad is it helps drive the narrative that the primary reason for people’s perceived decline of the country is immigrants, which it simply is not. An immigrant on £50 a week is not the reason you’re criminally underpaid and government and services favour the most powerful people over everyone else. It doesn’t mean it’s not an issue, as you spoke about, but dressing it as the main concern facing the country does far more harm than good. The only people it serves to help is every grifter who’s ever taken advantage of working class people in the country and blamed it on foreigners, that’s the danger, and one which leads you to then have to debate is he one of those grifters or has he been duped by the grifters like everyone else.
