EARLY ACCESS: 58. Gordon Ramsay (Video)

The Screen Rot Podcast is the show where we discuss the weirdest and worst content that's been rotting our screens and our minds.

It's Monday Night football for internet rubbish. This week we discuss: Gordon Ramsay. The most entertaining content creator, and possibly entertainer, of the last two decades.

GREAT EP, lads. Some longwinded input from someone who had some contact with Ramsay about the thing about him becoming the Robbie Williams of cooking or whatever: I worked as a TV journalist back when the aforementioned Boiling Point came out and I interviewed Ramsay for TV Times or TV Quick or some shit. He was great. Really nice and friendly and totally in love with making food. Honestly, it was all about food, what we'd eaten that day, how he'd cooked things, how food was the only thing he cared about since his aborted football career. Like, on the series he was a maniac and screamed a lot and that, but it was passion about cooking the BEST THING HE COULD. He was so driven by food, not entertainment. People say he was a bully but when he left Marco Pierre White, every single member of staff went with him (could be read as a comment on MPW*, but also you don't get too many people who worked for him bad-mouthing him). Next time I interviewed him it was for kitchen nightmares for another TV listings mag and he remembered me, which was nice and we had a really good chat. And my cousin actually ended up working for him (and thought he was great). So I'd get quite good stuff out of him every time he had a new series. Anyhow around season four or maybe five, when he started to open more and more restaurants, he became kinda sad (this is also when the rumours really were doing the rounds). Basically, he didn't have time to spend in the kitchen as much and as they expanded it became about him, not the food. By the time US Kitchen Nightmares began, he was pretty open about doing TV because the business depended on it - and by that point a few hundred people were relying on him. I think then he resigned himself to it, and tried to be good at content. The last time I interviewed him was for Junior Masterchef which he clearly enjoyed much more than the real yelling and set up stuff. So I think he's now pretty happy making content rather than food. Anyhow, if you want a bit of dirt on the Masterchef lads, I've got that too. * Also interviewed him and he was the most charismatic man I've ever met. Could have been a cult leader.

Great episode, but please please go and watch some of the clips from his first TV show Boiling Point and Beyond Boiling Point on YouTube. It’s the greatest work of television ever. Complete full blown terrifying maniac in them

Marco Piere White is one of the most intense and pure fuckers around. And despite him doing that cooking series for Knorr (as mentioned) he still manages to hold onto his integrity. When asked in an interview about once making Ramsay cry in his kitchen he said, "I didn't make him cry, he made himself cry. That was his choice to cry."

I was born in the Royal Free. If I knew it had racist nurses I would have asked my Mum to have me somewhere else. Kitchen Nightmares was almost a documentary when made in the UK. It just turned into a bad drama stateside. About 6% of this podcast was impression based.

There’s definitely something about mid-2000s Britain and a fetish for humiliating the public. Ramsay swearing at Chefs, Big Brother, Jeremy Kyle, XFactor

Joe Marshall

There used to be a tiktok which has since gone, and its sole purpose for exisiting was commenting on Ramsey saying utter bollocks as he cooks. Finely grate the cheddar.... Gordon slices the cheese. Take a wooden spoon. Grabs a knife. Probably a terrible example but it was brilliant

UCLH best north London hospital by a mile

As I recall, the US episodes of Kitchen Nightmares have a disclaimer along the lines of “some scenes have been created for dramatic effect” when they’re shown on Channel 4, which the UK episodes didn’t

loved this, there was a time mid-pandemic i was addicted to ramsay clips on youtube. The early british ones were just too sad, some poor fucker putting his life savings in to go bust basically through bad luck. The yanks ones were all nutters

14 mins in… “JUST WHATEVER!” HAHAHAHAHAHA! Excellent pod lads. I’m tempted to buy tickets for the holy trinity so you’re obliged to do an entire episode on a random person. (Worst idea ever btw) haha
