nicFW880 BETA 07C Release

As always please review previous release notes before asking questions. I do not repeat the features and updates from previous versions in these release posts. Also make sure you're using the RMS that comes from the same release post as the firmware does.

There is NO VIRUS in the downloads. If your system is reporting one then it's a false positive, I don't spread malware and I don't appreciate posts that suggest I do. I'm certainly not spending £500 a year on a darn code signing certificate. Radtel doesn't even do that. And no, there are no suitable free alternatives.

New in BETA 07?

RMS Zip files for Windows and Linux are available here.

-OSX RMS App Bundle available here-

If you're getting virus alert problems when downloading the RMS archive file (it means the so called security experts in control of malware detection are either corrupt, incompetent or both), you can download each file in the archive individually here. Just create a new folder for the RMS and download each file to that folder (excluding the source files).

Hi Marcus, your RMS can import a chirp CSV file now. Could you also add capability to export to chirp CSV?

Wayne WA2N

This usually applies tricks that sound intelligible on an SSB receiver but are not spectrum-clean SSB: “Slope FM”: Transmit very narrow-deviation FM and have the SSB receiver tune a bit off frequency. The SSB detector acts like a slope detector, turning FM into audio. Voice is intelligible, but the RF spectrum is still an FM carrier with symmetric sidebands. Not SSB, and bandwidth/regulatory behavior is FM-like. “Quasi-DSB via FM”: Drive the FM modulator with pre-shaped audio (e.g., pre-emphasized, clipped, phase-twisted) so that, at a particular offset on an SSB RX, it sounds closer to SSB. On a spectrum analyzer, it’s still FM/PM energy mirrored about the carrier; you haven’t removed a sideband or carrier. Audio-injection illusions: Feed MCU-generated tones or vocoder audio directly into the “mic” node (pre-emphasis/limiter). You can make it sound cleaner or more “punchy” on someone’s SSB RX, but RF is unchanged: FM.

Hi Marcus, I very well know that real SSB is simply not possible with the given hardware. For the UV-K5 there are are firmwares with "hacked" DSB TX (technically still FM, but in a way that it can be demodulated by real SSB receivers), for example the IJV firmware. Here (https://github.com/egzumer/uv-k5-firmware-custom/discussions/260) is also a short discussion of the topic. Have you considered implementing a similar approach?

Daniel

I will check out the wrap problem a bit more ,let you know. See if 7C helps first.

The 'Channel Name' menu acts on whatever channel is currently in-use. To create rename a channel, e.g. 500 Tune to FM broadcast frequency in Tuner mode Enter Main Menu, select CMS Write To -> 500 Exit Menu Enter Channel mode on tuner, select 500 Enter Main Menu -> CMS -> Channel Name Edit Name Exit Menu Repeat for different channels. The problem is that # and * in Tuner mode are used to adjust the BFO. This requires that # is in a special "Key Repeat" state, so it's not easy to swap keys around like in radio mode. RED has two functions, LP to exit and SP to V/M, if I swapped # and RED I'd somehow have to transfer both SP and LP functions to #, setup RED in keyrepeat. So "Exit Tuner" would now be LP-#, and BFO adjustment will be all lopsided. Sorry but it would just be a coding nightmare to do that.

What is the proper way to save a broadcast FM channel? I did Start Si4732 Tuner, short green press to main menu, CMS, Write To, Select a channel (500), press green. Back up with red, scroll to Channel Name, press green, enter name, press green. That worked for the first channel, name was OK. Then up arrow to next broadcast FM frequency and repeated the process writing to channel 501. The frequency was stored in 501 (per RMS read) but the new name overwrote channel 500's name. Channel 501 had the new frequency, blank name (per RMS read). Maybe there's a bug that writes name text to the memory channel number -1 from the menu? Entered 1 more FM broadcast channel and corrected the other names from the RMS and wrote to the radio, all channels 500-502 matched in the radio. Firmware 7C was installed BTW. Last observation, I have the Advanced - #/Red Mode set to Stock. In Si4732 Tuner mode red button and V/M buttons don't get swapped like they do in regular radio mode. Not a big deal, but inconsistent.

Wayne WA2N

With RED button you can switch between VFO and memory. With # you can switch between VFO A - VFO B - VFO C. Good luck!

Cristi Mitroi

Silly question time: How to toggle VFO/Memory mode? I just started with this firmware, so my apologies if I'm missing the obvious, but after programming in my local repeaters I went to test them and... can't find a way to call them up or switch from VFO mode to channel mode.

Bernhard Behling

Oh it's just a bugfix I'm working with someone on in direct chat. I'll update the post when the problem is resolved.

Marcus Dudley

What's different with Beta 7A? I loaded it instead of 7.bin, seems to work OK. I haven't messed with Band Plans, which may be what was fixed in 7A.

Wayne WA2N

yes, but just remember the XTAL 671 value from before and put it back in, you don't have to go through the whole calibration process again.

Marcus Dudley

Does a firmware upgrade necessitate a recalibration?

Ken Roberts

I thought I'd fixed that. It's harmless though. I'll sort it for next release, just ignore it for now. Yes it's exactly as you said, missing null terminator.

Marcus Dudley

Thanks for the new features. I did a factory restore after installing b7 and then wrote a codeplug with my channels/groups/etc. I wrote the example band plan from RMS (b7). On the radio I can view it, but at the bottom where it displays the name/freq's of the currently selected plan, it displays garbage text to the right of the the plan name. Is this a corruption on my device or just missing a null terminator or something? Each plan name has different garbage after it which can even overflow the edge of the settings window.
