Adam Tooze responds to listener questions

Adam Tooze returns to answer the many excellent questions sent in by listeners. Topics covered included the US tech sector's rapprochement with the Trump administration, Elon Musk's war on the the US administrative state, how the EU will respond to the threat of US tariffs, and what the prospects are for prosecuting a serious reforming social democratic programme in the light of failures such as the Syriza government in Greece or the Francois Mitterrand administration of the early 1980s in France.

As always thanks to everyone who sent in questions and for your continuing support for the show.

There are then several issues that need to be addressed. First, what label should we use and second, if we keep inventing new labels, how will we track historical trends? I believe the reason for the refusal is the deep reluctance of the status quo to give any ground to recognizing the crisis of the current moment in the hope that it just goes away.

I still don’t think this is Fascism. People are using an old, familiar word to describe something new and different.

It seems to hinge on "fascism is a response to a working class threat, but there is no threat, therefore they don't need/won't do fascism"

Might be misremembering but I thought the enthusiasm was the for the broader build back better agenda (that didn't survive the congressional horse trading).

Huge error in judgement to suggest that Fascism will show up in the same form, as we can see by the underestimation of Trump's second term. We've had fair warning and to continue to normalize what's happening will be at our own peril.

When Adam was on in August 2023 he was so enamoured with Biden administration’s IRA act, which didn’t remotely register with American voters and didn’t help them at all in the election, he gets too lost in the weeds of technical details sometimes

A treat to save for the weekend. Thanks to both of you!
