Listener questions: Richard Seymour
Added 2021-10-25 16:47:14 +0000 UTCRichard Seymour will be returning to the the show soon to respond to your questions - both on the recent episode on supply chains, environmental breakdown, and the UK's covid-19 situation - and more broadly. As anyone who follows his excellent blog will know, Richard's writing ranges far and wide - from Marxist theory to psychoanalysis, to current events and much else besides. If you'd like to put a question to Richard on these (or any other) topics please comment below, or email politicstheoryother@gmail.com with 'listener questions' in the subject line. I can't promise to ask every single question, but will do my best to select the best ones. Thanks as ever for supporting the show!

Is it time for the left in the Global North to redevelop an (ecosocialist) critique of consumption? What might this look like? How can it avoid liberal/ethical moralising, while coming to terms with GN's (differentiated) complicity in world system? With regards to XR/Insulate Britain, it feels as though left often lacks a serious critical response: feels as though we are on the back foot in this regard. Cheers

2021-10-26 12:41:13 +0000 UTCThe I was struck by Richard's assessment that the only way forward was a steady-state economy combined with international redistribution. I think there’s a positive version of this and I’m thinking of Graeber’s caring economy. I wonder if Richard could go into more detail of this AND how we convince Western consumers to shift our values in order to build a sustainable economy.

2021-10-25 18:54:30 +0000 UTCwould love to hear Richard’s thoughts on political developments in Latin America (are we in a second Pink Tide?) and Chile in particular. a whole bunch of issues are at stake in the country, but two stand out: (1) the possibility of a progressive exit from neoliberalism in the country where it was born, and (2) the difficult and quite under-discussed question of a constitutional politics for the left.
