Pretty clear 5 years later, that we need a left that has a platform and stands up for it at every opportunity. Disappointing to hear Barnaby conflate losing and standing up for what you believe in.

Cheryl

Ha, yes Barnaby does seem to talk at triple speed.

He talked too fast for my old ears, I’m afraid.

Hi Rosie! He isn't I'm afraid but I'll send your comments on to him.

Is Barnaby on this forum? His PhD research sounds so interesting! I fell into a bit of a rabbit hole earlier this year reading historic theories about the collapse of the welfare state (which is only tangential to my own research - absolutely not an 'intellectual historian'). I would love to hear if he has any thoughts on the tendencies of Marxist academics in the 70s and 80s (e.g. James O'Connor, Claus Offe) to predict the imminent collapse of the welfare state in Europe and the US, leading to the end of capitalism, why that trend disappeared, why Marxist writing on the welfare state all but ceased with the rise of neoinstitutionalism etc. I think he's right that today "it's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism", but would also argue that theorists in this period failed to imagine how capitalism would evolve. Ultimately they also became increasingly pushed out of the academy through its neoliberalisation in the 80s/90s - the 1990s edition of Socialist Register on 'The Retreat of the Intellectuals' has interesting discussions on this!
