#93 Towards a New Cold War? China and the US w/ Tobita Chow & Jake Werner

Tobita Chow and Jake Werner join me to talk about the roots of the increasingly antagonistic relationship between China and the United States, the reasons for bipartisan consensus on China's increasing technological prowess, and the specific character of anti-Chinese racism in the United States. We also talked about how the crushing of the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 signalled China's deepening integration into the US-led international order.

Hi Hannes! I'll ask Jake and Tobita.

I can't find the exact quote but one of the discussants makes the point that the liberal democratisation narrative suggesting that economic growth and private wealth accumulation leads to increased demands on elites to redistribute wealth and make institutions more inclusive has been disputed and that the labour movement has been the main agent of change. I was wondering if it is possible to point me to the evidence behind this statement? Apologies if I misremember this point and feel free to ignore if it's not making any sense :-)
