#79 The Force of Nonviolence w/ Judith Butler

Judith Butler joins me to discuss her new book, The Force of Nonviolence. We spoke about how the concept of self-defence raises the question of what the individual sovereign subject is, how some populations are interpellated as grievable - whilst others are not - and finally we spoke about the relevance of Sigmund Freud's 1918 essay, 'Mourning and Melancholia' to a utopian, militantly nonviolent politics.

Yeah I totally agree. To be honest I just want to know why she did it! Genuine conviction? Supporting the kid of a colleague? PMC interest? Lost a bet? Maybe we’ll never know.

Ha, no I'm afraid not. The discussion is really more on moral philosophy than on Judith's politics. Obviously, I think it's hugely disappointing that Butler supported Harris, but I also think the dismissal of her entire body of work on that basis by some left commentators is very silly.

Please tell me you asked her about the Harris donations.
