THE SOUNDS OF SPACE: A Sonic Adventure to Other Worlds

This short film was created in collaboration with the podcast Twenty Thousand Hertz, and is adapted from their episode "Space Remix".

Space is not just a feast for the eyes -- it’s a feast for the ears.  You just have to know where, and when, to listen.

Floating in the silent void of space are trillions of islands of sound, each with their own sonic flavor -- some eerily familiar, some wildly different than Earth’s. And even space itself was once brimming with sound.

This short film takes you on a journey back in time, to the edge of our solar system, and beyond, to discover what other worlds of sound are lurking beyond Earth's atmosphere.

Most are sounds we will never hear in our lifetimes. But by imagining them, we feed our curiosity about these worlds, and that curiosity is what will get us there one day.

For now, we have to be content with the sounds of Earth, inside our tiny bubble of air floating in a silent void. But we should feel lucky -- there's no other place like it in the universe.

Thank you patrons for making this video possible!  It's a bit different than my previous releases since it's based on a podcast episode, but it's been a blast to work on and I think you'll enjoy the ride.

Music & art downloads coming later this week.

Special thanks to Juan Benet, Morrison Waud, Rowdy Jansen, and Matthew Brown.

Going live on YouTube tomorrow with full patreon credits in description.

More updates on Life Beyond 3 in the coming weeks.

Peace and love,

THE SOUNDS OF SPACE: A Sonic Adventure to Other Worlds

Comments

While the video as such is great, I am quite disappointed that the real sound snippets, of the Venera lander, Perseverance or the early universe for example, are drowned in the music and sound effects. That makes it really hard to distinguish the real from the music. I would have hoped that music/sfx cease for at least a few seconds to get a listen to the real thing. :-(

Amazing work as usual ! Thank you to share so much inspiration.

Really loved this. Feel like I just left a planetarium Imax film, which is the highest compliment I can think of. Top work!

What an instant response, thank you.

Smooth

Thanks! Those are all awesome ideas -- there is much more to explore on the subject so there will probably be a sequel one day.

John Boswell

Thanks! I am working in Cinema 4D + Octane Render, using a 2080TI and 980Ti for rendering.

John Boswell

Wow, that was astonishing. melodysheep is by far the most incredible YouTube channel ever founded. I'm surprised these type of high quality videos are free to watch. Great work. Also a quick question, what do you use to render these?

Smooth

Yup, that's a Melodysheep production :) Great work!

Dan Thomas

Wow! John, you have created a marvel of audio and cinema! This episode was amazing. I am happy that I can play my small part and support you on Patreon in bringing these concepts to life. You create some of the most amazing content! Did you consider Io or Europa? Those would have amazing soundscapes just below the ground. Europa with its vast liquid ocean should transmit the sounds of water all across the hard ice shell of the planet. In addition to Randall’s comment about LIGO, there’s also pulsars, magnetars, and neutron star mergers. The first two, we could likely hear directly. The third would be most interesting to listen to - especially if the combine mass was enough to become a blackhole.

I considered it but decided to leave that for another video, otherwise I would have kept working on this for months. There was so much more to say that there may be a sequel eventually...

John Boswell

Great work! Immersive as usual. I thought for sure you would have brought up the LIGO gravity wave sound structure, might be for the sounds of space out in deep space episode ;P

Truly amazing, your works are always masterpieces. Thank you for these.

Amazing as usual! Keep changing the world!

Gorgeous as always! Can't wait for LB3, but this one is brilliant! You should think about rendering some short perfect loops of scenes in your videos for Wallpaperengine...these scenes SCREAM Wallpaper :D

Stunning ending! :) :)
