Linux Gaming on Bazzite - First Impressions!

I meant to share this with y'all Patreon and YouTube Members folks yesterday, but forgot! Sorry about that! This is the second podcast-style discussion that Henry Clark and I had about my new Linux gaming PC. The first was right after we'd finished stress testing the build with software on Windows, and this second one was after we had overwritten Windows with Bazzite and had spent about 3 days with it. I've learned so much since then, which will be featured in the full video about this new PC build, but these were our first impressions, at least! Check it out if you're interested in trying out Bazzite for gaming on Linux!

Linux Gaming on Bazzite - First Impressions!

This is great to see! I coincidentally did a similar thing recently, re-purposing a motherboard and CPU I upgraded into a Bazzite home theatre/gaming PC and the experience has been really smooth. One thing I should draw your attention to is that I am using an AMD RX 9070 and LG C2 TV with HDMI and am able to use 4K VRR at 120Hz, with HDR even, just fine. I think there is a lot of incorrect information out there about the capability of AMD GPUs on Linux with HDMI. I think it is true that for licensing reasons, they can’t implement the full HDMI 2.1 spec but that doesn’t mean you are strictly locked to HDMI 2.0 features. I think the LGs are tolerant enough that you can get close to the 2.1 feature set even though its not 100% compliant. It might be using chroma sub-sampling, which I haven’t tested, or possibly some kind of DSC type feature. I’ve struggled to find reliable information about this so the technical details of what I’m saying might be totally wrong but I know for sure VRR is working on my setup at 120Hz because the TV is showing the FreeSync logo and I can see the difference in smoothness when turning VRR on and off using the Xbox+A side panel VRR switch. I seem to remember having to fiddle with the game optimizer settings on the TV to get it to let me enable VRR there first for it to be possible to enable it on the PC side. Unfortunately, I can’t remember what I did. You may have to disable some other setting first.
