Linux Gaming PC Hardware Discussion!

Hey y'all, it's Try! This is the first of two podcast-style discussions with Henry Clark that I wanted to release to our Patreon and YouTube Member supporters. These were shot for potential sound bites that will go into a full episode that I'm working on about my experience with building a price-conscious Linux gaming PC that will be a good bit more powerful than Steam Machine, while likely not costing too much more and offering most of the same controller-friendly benefits.

I've really been wanting the SteamOS experience for PC gaming for quite a long time because I want PC gaming to feel as much like console gaming as possible! I was sure that I'd want a Steam Machine, but Henry and others in the MLiG community talked me into going this route instead, which involves using a Linux distro called Bazzite that behaves almost exactly like SteamOS. In this first podcast, we discuss the reasons behind the build, and then the logic behind every part chosen. I apologize that there's not much B-roll in here, but I didn't want to spend too much time editing it since I want to focus my time and energy on what I need to do for the full episode! We'll probably release the second podcast next week, which was shot about 3 days later, after we had hands-on experience with Bazzite.

Hope y'all enjoy!

I set up a budget Bazzite HTPC last year and it worked fine, but it lacked HDMI 2.1 support and I wanted to use all the features of my LG C1, so I went to Windows 11 (with a de bloat install) and it’s worked wonderfully. So much that I’ve disconnected my modern consoles and upgraded my GPU. That Steam Deck was a gateway to PC gaming for me. Bazzite wasn’t really console-like to me. It took a lot of fiddling with to set up and wake from sleep with my controller didn’t really work. Windows booting into Steam Big Screen mode is as close as I can get to a console. I wrote about my journey setting this stuff up here: https://longplaytech.com/tags/bazzite/

As a Linux convert a few years ago, this is exciting to see! I know you don't game on PCs much to begin with and that's why you're doing this, but the larger movement recently of people moving away from Windows and toward Linux is encouraging. My gaming PC is my old former daily driver, and it's my only device in active use that still has Windows (specifically 10). I currently set it to autoboot into Big Picture Mode, but when the time comes, I'm likely moving it to Bazzite as well. I don't play any online games that would present a problem. Looking forward to seeing where this takes you!

I'm really interested in seeing how your build works out, because I've been thinking about doing the same thing after trying to set up a dual boot Linux computer didn't quite work out.
