Pokemon: Resurgence Chapter 91

Hi all,

Here’s the first chapter. I will post a second Pokemon Resurgence chapter this week.

Chapter 91

Lucas listened intently, but the boat remained at the intersection. Its engine had ceased minutes ago. Whoever had entered their underground domain wasn't leaving anytime soon.

"Saphira," he said. "Move closer to the intersection. Silent as you can manage."

The massive Dragonite's powerful limbs cut through the water without creating so much as a ripple. Lucas marvelled at her grace—despite her size, she moved like a shadow through the underground river.

"Stop here."

Saphira paused about fifty metres from the intersection. He didn’t want to get too close and announce his presence. Lucas pulled Meowth's pokeball from his belt and summoned him. The Pokemon materialised on Saphira's back.

"Why did you bring me back here?" Meowth's whiskers twitched with annoyance. "I was having a lovely nap, thank you very much."

"We have company." Lucas nodded towards the intersection ahead. "I need you to use your stealth ability and get on board their boat. See what they're up to."

"You want me to swim through the water? Didn't I already state clearly my disdain for getting wet?"

"You'll only have to swim part of the way."

Lucas activated his Aura Projection skill. A perfect duplicate of himself materialised in the water beside Saphira, treading silently. "Hop on."

The feline Pokemon leaped onto the duplicate's shoulder, his form vanishing as he activated his stealth ability. Lucas controlled the copy, guiding it through the water, each stroke measured to avoid unnecessary sound. Even if he couldn’t control the copy beyond a hundred meters, it would be enough in this situation.

Lucas closed his eyes, concentrating on the link between himself and his projection. He had discovered the ability by accident—a synergy between his aura sight and projection skills. Through his copy’s senses, he could see, hear, and experience everything within range. The potential applications were numerous. He would send his copy into unknown situations without risking himself. He could spy on people without any fear of consequences. If the copy was discovered, he would simply cancel the skill and retreat.

The projection rounded the bend, and Lucas gasped at what he saw through its eyes.

A small motorboat idled in the intersection, its engine ticking as it cooled. Two men hunched over a piece of paper, their voices carrying across the water. Neither wore Team Rocket uniforms, but the bright red 'R' emblazoned on the boat's hull eliminated any doubt about their affiliation.

"Real subtle," Lucas muttered.

They could be excused for their carelessness, as they likely did not expect to find anyone else down here.

Movement above caught his attention. Two Golbat hung from the tunnel ceiling, their beady eyes scanning the water below. The moment they spotted his projection, their shrieks pierced the underground silence.

The men's heads snapped up, hands moving instinctively towards their pokeballs. Meowth's invisible form slipped into the water, using the commotion as cover to approach their boat undetected.

"There!" One man pointed directly at Lucas's duplicate. "Something's in the water!"

Lucas had his projection dive beneath the surface before cancelling it entirely. Back in his own body, Lucas opened his eyes to find the Golbat already rounding the intersection. Their echolocation quickly tracked him as soon as they sensed an intruder.

He threw out a pokeball. "Icarus."

The Pidgeot materialised in a burst of light, his keen eyes immediately assessing the threat. The Golbat swooped towards them, their shrieks rising in pitch.

Icarus became a blur of motion, his body wreathed in metallic energy as he struck the first Golbat. The impact sent the bat Pokemon crashing into the tunnel wall with a sickening crunch. The second Golbat attempted to veer away, but Icarus was already repositioning.

Razor-sharp blades of wind sliced through the underground space. The second Golbat's evasive manoeuvre became its downfall—it flew directly into the attack's path. Both Pokemon plummeted into the dark water with heavy splashes.

Lucas blinked, surprised at how quickly the fight ended. “I almost feel sorry for them.”

The motorboat's engine roared to life, its searchlight cutting through the darkness. The brilliant beam fell across Lucas and Saphira. He raised his arm to shield his eyes from the brightness.

"What are you doing down here?" The first man demanded.

Lucas squinted against the harsh light. "Funny, I was about to ask the same thing."

"Recall your Pokemon and surrender quietly," the second man called out. "Otherwise, we'll use force."

Lucas grinned. "How about I beat you up and send you blasting off at the speed of light?"

At that precise moment, Meowth leaped from the water onto Saphira's back, clutching a sodden bundle of papers. Water dripped from his whiskers as he struck a dramatic pose.

"Meowth, dat's right!"

The Team Rocket members stared at the talking Pokemon in obvious confusion. They hadn't yet noticed their missing documents.

"What's that supposed to mean?" The first one demanded.

"Don't worry about it. Insider joke."

The man's face darkened. "You think this is funny? I'll give you one more chance to surrender quietly, or you're going to be in a world of pain."

Both men reached for their pokeballs on their belts. Lucas, however, had already moved to end the confrontation.

He used Dante's stealth summoning ability, bringing forth the Pokemon, who stayed invisible for the first few seconds. Dante teleported right behind the two men, moving without them noticing.

Dante used Hypnosis, and the psychic energy flowed over them. The men's movements slowed, their eyes growing heavy. One tried to fight the mental intrusion, his hand trembling as he struggled to release his Pokemon. The effort proved futile. Both collapsed onto their boat's deck in seconds.

Dante caught their falling bodies with telekinesis, lowering them to the deck. He quickly confiscated their pokeballs before waving to Lucas.

"Great work, Dante. I should use this approach more often and avoid unnecessary fights entirely."

Saphira swam to the motorboat, allowing Lucas to climb aboard. The craft bobbed gently under his weight as he searched the small cabin. He found rope coiled beneath one of the seats and set about securing his unconscious prisoners.

The defeated Golbat floated nearby. Saphira scooped them from the water and threw them on the boat's deck. Lucas found their empty pokeballs and returned the Pokemon.

"Now," he said, turning to Meowth, "what did you find?"

The feline Pokemon handed over the waterlogged papers. Despite them being wet, the ink remained legible. "It's a map of the underground channel system. Extensive doesn't begin to cover it. These blokes had only scratched the surface."

Lucas examined the crude sketches, noting dozens of branching tunnels marked but unexplored. The underground river system was far more complex than he'd imagined. How did Giovanni find this place? Did he tell the men to map the underground river? Or were they exploring on their own?

The text in the map’s upper right corner caught his eye. It said “Pewter City,” which had to be their starting point. Lucas hardly believed his eyes. Pewter City was far across Eastern Kanto, hundreds of kilometres away. He had considered the underground tunnels a security risk, but this was much worse. How many people knew about it?

Below that, another note made him frown. It read, “Found some ancient ruins. Too many traps for us to handle alone. Will come back to it later.”

"There are ruins down here?" Lucas looked up from the map. "Did Giovanni know about them?"

Meowth snorted. "Who cares? If there's loot inside, we need to grab it for ourselves."

"Is that all you care about?"

"I care about you and the missus, Boss. But you come a distant second to the almighty pokédollar."

Lucas considered their unconscious prisoners. "What are we going to do about these two?"

"Dump them in the water?" Meowth suggested cheerfully. "See if they can recover from Dante's hypnosis before they drown."

"Tempting, but I'd rather avoid murder if possible. Still, I can't let them leave. They know too much."

"Then have Bree wipe their memories of this place."

"Exactly what I was thinking. First, let's find out if they are willing to share where the entrance to the underground river is on the Pewter City side. I'd rather avoid spending days traversing this river to reach the ruins."

"Where's your sense of adventure?"

"Using my own words against me. You've been taking lessons from Sabrina."

"She's a great teacher."

Later that evening, Lucas received a call from Sabrina.

"How's the hunt going?" he asked.

"Poorly." Frustration bled through her voice. "The separatists receive massive support from the public here, even after their despicable actions. Finding and rooting them out becomes much harder when the locals aren't cooperating."

"What about your intrusive mind reading? Isn't that working?"

"Why did you have to frame it like that?"

Lucas chuckled. "Well, I never know when you're reading my mind, even when you claim you're not."

"That's the price you pay for dating me." She paused. "I have to be careful how I use it, as people will start noticing and become even warier. The people I probed knew nothing, including the prisoners. The separatists are highly organised and keep information compartmentalised."

"So you're going to be there much longer."

"At least another two weeks. How's your end progressing?"

"Already finished with the tunnels. Found a massive stash of Giovanni's wealth."

"Really? Did you tell anyone else about it?"

"Hell no. I'm keeping it for myself. We're looking at over one hundred million pokédollars."

"Good. With how you spend money, we're going to need it."

Lucas grinned. "Meowth was right about you."

"What did that menace say about me?"

"Claims I've corrupted you."

Sabrina snorted. "He's not wrong."

"Moving on. Giovanni's stash wasn't the only discovery I made. There's this enormous underground river system running from Celadon to Pewter City. Probably extends farther. It hasn't been fully explored yet."

"Sounds like it would be nice to explore."

"It would take a while. Perhaps when we have more time. By the way, I encountered two Team Rocket members down there. They were mapping the area and had already stumbled across some ruins."

“What did you do with them?”

“Introduced them to Bree,” Lucas said. “She helped me extract some information from them before wiping their memories of the place. Dante dropped them off somewhere in Western Kanto.”

“Are you giving me more work?”

“I doubt they can cause any trouble in the time that you are there.”

"They better not, otherwise you’re going to pay, mister.” Sabrina cleared her throat. “About these ruins. Are you going to explore them? Please wait until I return. I can't let you have all the fun."

"Sure. I've got plenty of other things to keep me occupied in the meantime. Hey, is that bet still on?"

"I'm not running naked down the streets."

"No, but you can give me a private show. I want to see how much they bounce when—"

"I'm hanging up now."

The line went dead. Lucas chuckled as he set his phone aside and headed to the kitchen to prepare dinner.

While waiting for his meal to cook, Lucas opened his menu. He now had sixteen skill points thanks to the two quests he completed recently. He browsed through the available skills.

Keeping some points in reserve made sense, particularly with his Breeding skill approaching another milestone. He could always earn more, so being overly cautious wasn’t necessary. He had gained a lot of experience points, though the amount needed to level up had become ridiculous. Still, completing more quests meant he would always have skill points available.

Lucas had been thinking about returning to the Battle Arena. His team bore little resemblance to the squad he'd brought during his last visit. He wanted to earn some more points for the exclusive items in the arena shop. The battles also offered great training for him and his team, as there was no shortage of tough opponents.

The Adventurer's Guild, by contrast, had become increasingly irrelevant. Their posted requests offered meagre rewards compared to his personal quests. Why waste time completing money rewards he didn’t need, when a single quest completion netted him hundreds of thousands of experience points and valuable skill upgrades?

The quest system had its flaws. He was given the Criminal Underbelly quest to capture the bounty targets in the underground tunnels. But things didn’t go as planned when he found the teleportation towers. Even after coming back with the army to clear the tunnels, the quest failed. The system decided he either didn’t complete the objectives alone or missed some targets. But it was a minor inconvenience. As long as he continued to receive quests, it didn’t matter if all of them were successful.

The truth was that he had almost too many skill points. Most of his skills were already at their maximum level. The real bottleneck lay in his professions, which had become frustratingly slow to advance now that he approached level ten in several areas. Each increment required exponentially more effort than the previous level, turning what once felt like rapid progress into a grinding slog.

He allocated four points to his Pokemon Friendship skill, pushing it to level four. The upgrade would make it easier for him to befriend strong wild Pokemon up to level eighty. Whether he wanted to recruit a high-level team member or add more Pokemon to his breeding operation, the enhancement would prove invaluable.

Nine points went toward maximising his Concentrate skill entirely. The improvement would increase his ability to craft pills. Given how profitable his alchemy had become, the investment made perfect economic sense.

Lucas closed the menu. The remaining points would stay in reserve.

He rose from his chair and wandered into the kitchen, his mind already shifting toward tomorrow's packed agenda. His Hoenn property had accumulated a backlog of tasks requiring personal attention, and he wanted to know whether he could grow the plant he'd discovered in the channel.

He also needed to visit Rayquaza. Their relationship had progressed to the point where maximum favourability lay within reach—probably just one or two more visits would cement their bond completely. Once achieved, he could make his request for assistance in retrieving the Red Orb from Groudon.

With the Red Orb secured, Raijin would receive another substantial power upgrade that could elevate the young Zapdos to match or even exceed his strongest team members.

Lucas stepped into the temple. Rayquaza's presence filled the central chamber, its serpentine form draped across the floor, watching him as he approached.

"Do you have any more requests for me?" Lucas called out.

Months of interaction with the legendary Pokemon had stripped away his nervousness. Rayquaza remained a force beyond comprehension, but familiarity bred comfort. The legendary's favourability sat tantalisingly close to the Honoured threshold—one more successful quest would push their relationship to the coveted Revered status. He judged that he wouldn't need to increase it further. Reaching Revered status should provide enough leverage to request assistance from Rayguaza with obtaining the Red Orb.

Rayquaza tilted its head. No verbal response came, but Lucas received a notification for another quest.

============

New Legendary Quest: Uniting the Land, Sea, and Sky

Description: Rayquaza wishes to establish harmony with its brethren. Create a territory where Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza can coexist peacefully. Expand and/or terraform your property to accommodate all three legendaries.

Reward: Maximum favourability with Rayquaza (Revered: 32000/32000); 1000,000 experience points.

Failure: Quest must be completed within three months, or favourability will decrease permanently.

============

Lucas stared at the quest parameters until his eyes watered. The words remained stubbornly unchanged.

"You don't want much, do you?" His voice cracked slightly. "Do you understand how difficult a task you've given me?"

Rayquaza blinked slowly. If Lucas could translate that expression, it would read: How is that my problem?

The scope of the request hit him like a brick wall. Sure, expanding his territory wouldn't be the hardest thing—Giovanni's treasure hoard had taken care of his money problems. But getting his hands on land near Groudon's volcanic stomping ground? That was a different story entirely. Its territory was too distant for him to buy all the land in between.

Kyogre was a bigger problem. He'd need to terraform enough land to create a proper sea. The engineering alone would require a herculean effort. First, he would need to get permission from the government. There was no chance they would let him turn a large piece of land, even if he owned it, into a new inland sea.

The Hoenn government was already twitchy about Rayquaza setting up shop on his property. Three legendary Pokemon living in the same place? They'd lose their collective minds.

Lucas shook his head, pushing the concerns aside. First, he needed to determine if the quest was even feasible.

"Hey, does it have to be this property?" Lucas asked. An idea sparked in his mind. "Can I find another location closer to the sea? Can you move your structure there?"

Rayquaza considered the question, its massive head tilting thoughtfully. After a long pause, it nodded once.

"Right, that makes things slightly easier." Lucas started pacing, his mind running through different possibilities. "Although I don't know if it's possible to own part of the ocean. I'd have to become king of my own country."

The solution crystallised as he spoke. An island. Surrounded by a natural ocean habitat for Kyogre, with enough land mass for Groudon and Rayquaza. It would also address the public relations nightmare—moving three legendary Pokemon off the main continent would ease political tensions considerably.

But did such an island exist in Hoenn? Something large enough, uninhabited, and available for purchase? The surrounding waters would need to come with ownership rights, which complicated matters exponentially.

Lucas dismissed the notion of relocating to Kanto. Shichiro would never approve of bringing three legendary Pokemon into his region, regardless of their relationship. More importantly, legendary Pokemon rarely left their native regions. Furthermore, people felt a strong, unusual sense of ownership over them. Moving Hoenn's legendaries to another place could cause serious diplomatic problems.

"I've got to get going," Lucas announced, heading for the exit. "You've given me an almost impossible task. If I weren't terrified of your power, I'd give you a proper scolding."

Outside, Lucas reminded himself of the stakes. Strengthening Raijin again was invaluable, especially after absorbing the Blue Orb had transformed the young Zapdos into something unprecedented. The legendary bird had become a unique entity, no longer merely a Zapdos but something entirely new.

The potential power boost from the Red Orb could not be understated. Although the quest was difficult, he would try his best to finish it.

Lucas walked through the farmhouse door, already dialling Butch's number. The phone rang twice before his manager's familiar voice answered.

"What can I do for you, Boss?"

"I need to buy an island in the Hoenn region."

"Sure—wait, what did you say? Why do you want to buy an island?"

"It has to be large enough for two legendary Pokemon to coexist comfortably. And I need ownership of the surrounding sea for a third legendary."

Lucas pulled the phone away from his ear as a rhythmic thumping sound echoed through the speaker. He waited for the noise to stop before continuing.

"What are you doing?"

"Banging my head against the wall," Butch replied. "I think I've gone mental. Could have sworn you said you want an island for some legendary Pokemon."

"You heard correctly the first time. Come now, after working for me for months, surely requests like this don't surprise you."

"Boss, this wasn't in my employment contract." Butch's exasperation bled through the connection. "Would you at least explain why you need to do this?"

"Rayquaza told me to."

"Of course it did. Silly me for asking." A heavy sigh came through the speaker. "I'm assuming the other two legendary Pokemon joining Rayquaza in domestic bliss are Kyogre and Groudon?"

"Correct. Hence, the island requirement. It's a bit difficult to transplant an ocean into the middle of the Hoenn continent."

"Even if buying an island is possible, it won't be cheap. Do you have the funds after all the infrastructure you've been building?"

"I recently came into some money. Is a hundred million pokédollars enough?"

Butch's sharp intake of breath was audible. "It's a start. I won't ask how you acquired it." A pause followed, presumably while he organised his thoughts. "Stay there. I'll be in Hoenn later today. Better to check if suitable real estate exists before worrying about legal complications."

"If I owned an island, I could technically create my own country, right?" Lucas warmed to the idea. "Where I'm head of state and make my own laws? This isn't completely impossible, is it?"

"I don't know if that's even feasible," Butch admitted. "I'll have to research it. Even if it's legal, achieving it presents significant challenges."

"Thanks, Butch. I knew I hired you for good reason."

"I want a raise. You're going to be the death of me."

"Certainly. I'll even make you a citizen of my country. You can discuss political reforms and complain about the tyrannical head of state with the legendary Pokemon over afternoon tea."

The line went dead.

Lucas stared at his phone. "Too much?"

He started to pocket the device when Sabrina's previous warnings about his spending habits echoed in his memory. Should he tell her now or wait until after the purchase? The old adage about forgiveness versus permission seemed applicable.

On second thought, she'd probably murder him if he didn’t tell her. He dialled her number.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Lucas and Butch stood on the ship's deck, salt spray misting their faces as Southern Island emerged on the horizon. The name was distinctly unoriginal, but Lucas had the freedom to rename it if he owned the place. The island grew larger with each passing minute, revealing dense jungle canopy and pristine white beaches that stretched along its coastline.

They'd hired Captain Maggie's boat for the journey—a sturdy vessel that had seen better decades but remained seaworthy. Maggie herself was a tall, broad-shouldered woman with a weathered face that spoke of years battling ocean storms. Her blunt way of speaking had entertained Lucas from the moment they'd met.

She kept calling him "pretty boy," but the way she said it wasn't a compliment. More like she was commenting on something distasteful she'd stepped in. Lucas found it hilarious and thought she was a riot. She knew who he was, but she didn't take his status into account at all. If anything, his fame seemed to make her more inclined to take the piss out of him.

Lucas could have flown to the island, but he did not know the area at all. Instead of spending time looking for the island himself, he decided it was better to take a ship with a captain who knew where she was going.

Butch had done his research thoroughly, as always. Southern Island was completely uninhabited, and the government had never bothered trying to develop it. The main reason was distance—it sat too far from the mainland to be economically viable for most purposes. Although it technically remained part of the Hoenn region, it hardly seemed like it.

The isolation was exactly what Lucas needed for the legendary Pokemon, assuming he could navigate the legal complexities of ownership.

Surprisingly, his conversation with Sabrina had gone better than expected. She hadn't minded that he'd gotten himself mixed up in another crazy situation. She'd explained that it was his money, and he was free to do as he wished with it. Her only comment was that it meant they'd have a holiday destination in the future, especially since the island boasted some spectacular beaches. She'd even joked that not developing such a place would be a crime against tourism.

Lucas and Butch hadn't approached the government yet about purchasing the island. Butch was still researching all the legal requirements, permits, and political considerations involved in such a massive acquisition. Lucas wanted to see the place for himself first, get a feel for whether it would work for his purposes. No point in starting the bureaucratic nightmare if the island wasn't suitable.

The boat drew closer, and Lucas got his first proper look at the place. The island had a distinctly tropical vibe. Palm trees swayed along the beaches, their fronds rustling in the ocean breeze. Dense jungle covered the interior, broken by rocky outcroppings and what looked like freshwater streams cascading down towards the sea. The water around the island was so clear he could see the coral formations beneath the surface.

"We'll have to set anchor out at sea and take the dinghy to shore," Maggie announced. "There's no dock, and there are plenty of sharp rocks in the shallow waters. Don't fancy tearing the hull open."

"Alright," Lucas replied. "We're planning to camp on the beach for the night. Are there many wild Pokemon on the island?"

"Of course there are," Maggie snorted. "It's untouched by humans, so they're going to thrive here."

"Any high-level Pokemon we should worry about?"

Maggie shrugged. "Some. Don't worry, pretty boy. Old Maggie will protect you if they get aggressive."

Lucas grinned. "You're the best, Maggie. I'd marry you if I weren't already committed."

"Who'd want a dipshit like you?" Maggie shot back without missing a beat. "There must be something seriously wrong with Miss Kuroi's head."

Lucas turned to Butch, who was looking slightly green around the gills from the boat's motion. "Where did you find this charming young lady?"

"In a pub," Butch replied. "She was bashing some bloke's head in with a bar stool."

"Stellar judgment on your part."

Maggie cut the engine and began lowering the dinghy into the water. They gathered their supplies and climbed into the smaller boat. Maggie took the oars and began rowing towards shore, her massive arms making the work look effortless. Each stroke propelled them smoothly through the water.

They reached the shore and dragged the dinghy further up onto the beach, well above the high-tide line. Lucas shielded his eyes against the brilliant sunshine and looked around. He was itching to start exploring, but first, they needed to establish their base camp.

He summoned his Pokemon team, except for Raijin.

Lucas leaned down and whispered to Dante, who had materialised beside him in his usual silent fashion. "Could you teleport me here from the mainland?"

Dante tilted his head, considering the question. The Gardevoir's expression suggested he was trying to gauge the distance involved.

Lucas smacked his forehead. "Right, you don't know how far we've travelled. Let me think... It's about twice the distance from Cinnabar Island to the Kanto coast. Can you manage that?"

Dante thought about it for a moment before nodding.

"Perfect," Lucas said. "If I do buy this island, I'll have an easy way of getting here without relying on boats every time."

They set up camp, with his Pokemon helping to clear a suitable area and gather firewood. Saphira used her weather control abilities to create a gentle breeze that kept the worst of the tropical heat at bay. Max helped set up the larger tent, his massive frame making short work of the heavy canvas.

Once the camp was established, Lucas left Butch and Maggie to settle in while he went off to explore. Butch looked uncomfortably hot in his green business suit, sweat already beading on his forehead, but the man stubbornly refused to change into something more appropriate for the tropical climate. Some habits died hard.

Lucas struck out along the beach first, wanting to get a sense of the island's perimeter. The sand was pristine, unmarked by human activity. Coconut palms leaned over the water at dramatic angles, their roots partially exposed by tidal erosion. He spotted several species of Pokemon, but they ignored him as long as he kept his distance. None of them were high-level, so it made sense they didn't want to confront his team.

The jungle called to him next. He pushed through the thick plants, following what looked like trails left by some Pokemon. The island was larger than he'd initially thought. After an hour of walking, he'd barely scratched the surface of what there was to explore. Fresh water seemed abundant—he'd crossed three different streams already, all flowing towards the sea. The terrain varied from flat coastal areas to rolling hills covered in dense vegetation.

He was making his way up a particularly steep slope when movement in the sky caught his attention. Something large and blue streaked overhead, moving with impossible grace through the air. Lucas's heart rate spiked as he got a brief glimpse of sleek, aerodynamic form cutting through the clouds.

Latios.

The realisation hit him like a thunderbolt. Southern Island—of course. How could he have forgotten? In the games, this place had been created specifically to capture the legendary Pokemon Latios and Latias. If one was here, the other probably wasn't far away.

Lucas stood frozen, watching the sky where the legendary had disappeared. He'd come here looking for a place to house three legendary Pokemon, only to discover the island already had residents. This complicated things considerably, but it also presented an incredible opportunity.

If he could somehow convince Latios and Latias to accept his presence, along with Rayquaza, Groudon, and Kyogre, he'd be creating the most powerful sanctuary in the world. The question was whether five legendary Pokemon could coexist peacefully in one location, or whether he'd just set himself up for the most spectacular disaster in recent history.

So, what do you think? Will Lucas become king of his own island country? I had fun with this chapter.

Thanks for reading.
