JT5205: OKI MSM5205 Core Released

Tiger Road uses ADPCM recordings for the Japanese version. I needed a core for the MSM5205 ADPCM decoder and there was not anyone ready to use in the scene. I have written one and made it public here.

This is an important piece of hardware because it is at the core of many arcades. Among them Double Dragon, which I am working towards too as it is a request from many of you :-)

You can hear to a quick preview of sounds inside the Japanese ROM of Tiger Road (aka Tora e no michi) clicking at the attached play button. I hope to finish the rest of the integration work soon so I can share the final Tiger Road core with you.

I hope other developers will grab this core and use it too.

Unless I have explicitly said no to a request, it means it is my list. I try to lay out work in such a way that I can get to requested cores in a fast way but still producing intermediate results. If I were to go directly for System 16, for instance, you may not see any result from me in a few months.Instead I am trying to jump from one core to another similar one that introduces an extra element that I also need for some other requested core. For instance, last month I chose Bionic Commando because it used M68000, which is needed for System 16 and CPS1, and also uses an MCU which is needed for Double Dragon (although not the same MCU model). Then Tiger Road is similar to Bionic Commando but introduces an ADPCM chip, which I had to write a small core for. That ADPCM decoder is present in many arcades, either in that exact form or in a multichannel variant. I announce the game (or games) before Patreon makes any charge so you can always switch to a low tier until something interesting comes up. Please do not hesitate to remind me of your preferences more than once. If see patrons excited about something I react to it. It helps me a lot to know what you guys want.

It's a bit of a mistery but to add ADPCM samples was quite expensive. There are some 5 extra chips on the PCB for this and 3 of them were probably quite expensive. I may write post a small explanation about the circuit.

Good job. Now, I was wondering if you keep statistics of your patrons on a subject how many requests you got for one core or another. I would simply like to see whether my contributions fit in your future works and profile. Having a certain interest on particular cores I would rather contribute larger amount one time when interested core is being worked on, rather than spending multiple times for works that are completely outside of my interest. Inget that even with small contributions I am still helping your work but spending 90% of it on something that it's outside of radar in is not very efficient. Just common sense. Keep up the good work.

Only the Japanese version uses samples? That seems... unusual. Maybe they didn’t want to spend to record English versions for the US release?
