Their live shows contained quite a bit of improv. Rik Mayall actually gave your definition of why the show was named Bottom, when asked - it about two guys who are at the very bottom of society. The fact that, in most episodes, there are just Richie and Eddie, carries on a tradition in UK sitcoms started by Alan Simpson and Ray Galton who wrote the TV series "Hancock's Half Hour" and, quite often, it was just Tony Hancock and Sid James without any other actors, a theme which they continued with "Steptoe and Son" where it was often just Harry H Corbett and Wilfrid Brambell arguing lie "an old married couple" just like Richie and Eddie. There was also a sitcom bridging the gap between "They Young Ones" and "bottom" called "Filthy Rich and Catflap", with Rik as Richie Rich - a failed TV personality and Ade as Eddie Catflap, his minder with Nigel Planer as Richie's agent Ralph Filthy. It only lasted for one season, but you could see the whole Richie and Eddie situation developing into the "Bottom" characters.

2025-11-01 20:50:00 +0000 UTCAlways good seeing a reaction to a bottom, the chemisty between Rik and Ade is almost magical, at this point in time 1991, they had been a double act for the 80's, actually met a manchester uni in the mid 70's. For me the chemisty makes the show.
