Ren'Py Developer Update - March 2024

Welcome to the end of March, and happy holidays for those who celebrate.

This month had a lot of development on the next major release of Ren’Py, focusing on the audio filter feature. In this month's article, I’ll cover what went on this month, some of the design of the audio filter feature, and how to use it. And along with that, you’ll be getting access to a tool that will let you try out some of the filters yourself.

This isn't really the right tool to do dynamic/adaptive music. You can pretty much do that already with queue music, or by starting music on multiple channels and adjusting the per-channel volumes on the fly.

Awesome, this is very useful even in a lesser form compared to a daw, and opens an interesting set of new possibilities. Being able to do those effects live is a big game changer in itself.

This is really cool. I'm not skilled at the audio side of things, but I'm curious if the mix feature help if you wanted to, say, implement dynamic/adaptive music, like in the Monkey Island games? I can see that being really useful for a VN where there might be long sequences with the same kind of mood.

Cheers Tom. Audio filters is a cool addition, I'm looking forward to being able to applying those instead of having to provide multiple audio files with the filters baked in!
