When these stories reach back into the 70s, it's really shocking at the leniency with which so many violent sex offenders were treated! And there are instances in modern times where it happens too.... as you said, enraging.

It doesn't seem like it could be what most jurisdictions use now, whether the defendant knew right from wrong. People don't rape other people because they think it's okay or a good thing to do for society. It's just engaging that this predator was able to manipulate the system over and over and over. The extent of systemic misogyny isn't deep now as it was then, but we still have a long way to go.
