What Counts as a Major Video/When are you Charged

Howdy! It's hard to believe I've been doing this for four months now, but as I create and grow, I'm also quietly experimenting with the content itself, making little tweaks and changes here and there.

One thing I'm learning is that bigger videos are both more work, and harder to engage with. I'm hoping to start splitting videos into smaller pieces, but here on the edge of releasing my next video, I'm nervous about charging for shorter videos.

The wording "per major video" can leave some confusion, and I don't anyone to feel cheated so here's a quick breakdown of my self imposed rules for "what counts as a major video." The guidelines are:

1. Took around a week or more to produce.

If I managed to spit out a video in literally two or three days, I can't count that as a major video. "Spamton is a Cat" I made in a matter of hours, so it wouldn't count.

2. Longer than 5 minutes.

Youtube actually benchmarks what counts as a "long" video at the 8 minute mark. That's when you can put an ad break in the middle of a video.

I was previously shooting to have videos be around 10 minutes long, but that's been causing me to churn out 20 minute beasts. Placing my "goal" at 8 minutes is better because if I overshoot it I'll be around the 10 minute mark, and if I undershoot... uh... actually that has never happened, I seem incapable of undershooting it. But if I did and it ended up being 5 minutes or less, I wouldn't charge for it.

3. Is about Undertale/Deltarune

I do enjoy making videos about other weird things (cough Pokemon) but my channel is Undertale/Deltarune focused, and my Patreon promises Deltarune/Undertale videos, so if it's on a different game (or topic) it doesn't count. (Undertale Balloon Animals was an example of a video that was not charged for).

4. Does not need to be a theory!

That said! Discoveries and observations aren't always theories, and the line can be blurred when making new discoveries. While my goal is to find new information and try to give it some context, videos like Goner Code and Element 6 often blur the line and I don't want people to feel duped if I make a video that's just a compilation of observations or evidence.

I'm planning to release a video on Sunday that skirts against these lines. It's about 8 minutes, Deltarune related, and I've been working on it for quite a while. HOWEVER as a patron, you have the ability to set month caps on how often you are charged. If you are at all nervous about this subject, I strongly advise setting a monthly cap to ensure you aren't paying for more then you bargained for.

Monthly caps do not impact your rewards. You will still have early access to new videos, you will still receive bonus material, and if you backed at the discord tier, or are entitled to a commission you will still have access to it. So please do not feel bad or forced by the "per monthly video" system.

The reason I'm using such a system is to encourage production and provide a mechanism for people to provide extra incentive for more videos, but only if they can afford to do so. Please don't feel obligated to give more then you can afford. I promise I won't hold it against you.

TLDR: The next video is shorter, it is long enough that it will still be charged for, please adjust your monthly-caps accordingly.
