Ramble: A postmortem on the Star Wars Hotel video

It's not too late to fix the starcruiser

Ramble: A postmortem on the Star Wars Hotel video

Comments

just finished rewatching the original video again and i will make a plea to any patron with video suggesting rights that a ramble video where jenny designs her dream escape room would rock my world

a. sharp

hmmm ok i have no involvement with star wars whatsoever, im playing george's advocate bc i thought this comment was interesting: does that imply the star wars universe is simply industry/military-dominated to a degree that being a pilot is equivalent to having any job involving cars in our universe? like famously mass-produced spaceships are equivalent to generic sedans so is having a spaceship functionally just a car? what are the implications of ''pilot'' as a job title being diluted in this way-- is it like the oceangate ''mission specialist'' thing lol

a. sharp

Apropos of nothing, there's this thing about Star Wars that's always felt odd to me. It feels like EVERYBODY is a frikkin pilot. Anakin; Anakin's son, Luke; Luke's friends; Harrison Ford and his son; Darth Vader; Rey; Poe... i wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that kid with the broom and the guy who's 3 inches tall are pilots too. Everybody! It's kinda like how everybody is related to everybody else. It makes the Wars world seem so small. Anyway, it reminds me of the Rocky franchise. It just seems like there are too many boxers who all seem to know each other, and they're ALL contenders? The Russian guy is a boxer, then so is his son and they both get into feuds with champion boxers. Apollo's a boxer, and his son is a boxer, and they're both world champions. Creed Jr's best friend from childhood becomes a champion too. Rocky runs into a random kid on the street, that guy becomes a world champion boxer. Rocky's son didn't become a professional boxer, but he learned to box anyway. Is boxing genetic or something?

Jenny’s point about some influencers talking like paid shills on purpose even though they aren’t paid is one of the most depressing but irrefutably true things I’ve ever heard

Robert Karnick

Yeah, those criticisms of “you should demand a better seat” are particularly unhinged, it basically comes down to: “Use your leverage to demand some lesser human gets a crappy seat so you can give Disney a good review.”

Brighton Hushing-Kline

ig i headcannoned that ytbrs didnt get nervous about receiving thousands of comments on their videos because if that were me i would go insane. i get anxious just from having an opinion and seeing people disagree with it even if i didnt post about it. so i thought public figures must be so sure of what theyre saying they dont feel that way bc otherwise they would be miserable all the time. I guess that can be the case then lol. im sorry about that, i would feel the same.

Me, a pittsburgher, hearing Jenny gush about kennywood: woohooooo!! Me, a pittsburgher, hearing that there are bedbugs in a hotel here: AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Gabi

Ah bless I can imagine it must be so incredibly stressful when posting videos. We're very grateful for the content you produce!

Chilledsanity

Would I lose my mind for Jenny to do an interview with Ann Morrow Johnson? Yes. Yes I would. Does that idea live in the realm of possibility? Unforch probs not.

Dickie

I grew up in Pittsburgh, Kennywood was my home park for years! So happy to hear it get love

As far as the criticism it’s pretty much what exactly what you explained in the OG video. People who spent all that money feel obligated to blindly defend it to justify the cost. Like guys YOU WERE FOOLED!

mwsavannah

I'm imagining a situation in which you did ask for a different seat at dinner, and they just swapped you into another place with obstructed view due to a different post.

I am just so mad that people still support the star cruiser. How can they just compeletly ignore the exploitation of workers because they "had fun"? I can't imagine defending the experience after learning that the people working there were being taken advantage of to the degree that they were. I don't care if some former wage slaves claim they had a great time, it goes against fundamental human rights to force people to work long hours for little to no pay. It goes against all common sense and decency to run a luxury hotel that way, especially since they 100% have the funds to run it properly and pay fair wages. Mind boggling. Supporting any company that openly chooses to operate that way just makes them terminally thoughtless people. This video is not even really about the hotel or the people who enjoyed it, its a critique of corporate greed. That they somehow manage to take it personally is baffling- Nobody is coming after you for enjoying your honeymoon John and Linda, but those nice young people that served you space champagne and remembered your names were exploited by Disney, and thats bad.

Coming back from trawling the corners of reddit again, I found a link to this post about someone's Starcruiser experience in 2022, and wouldn't you know it was basically exactly what Jenny experienced. https://www.reddit.com/r/WaltDisneyWorld/comments/v82lyj/galactic_starcruiser_reportback_genuinely_feel/ They even say almost the exact same thing she did about how they backed themselves into a corner with the shitty accommodation because it's hard to think of any reasonable way to charge what those rooms are actually worth and still make a profit on them. It also strikes me that this is from June of 2022. A lot of fans of Starcruiser say it was just early kinks they were still working out, if you went on later cruises they had fixed these problems etc - and to that I'd still say you shouldn't be paying those prices to play test for them, the first cruises should have been discounted then - but this seems to suggest they were running cruises for at least 2 full *months* without fixing the major problems like the faulty app. Insane that anyone still defends the Starcruiser as a whole instead of simply accepting they had a good time but the whole thing was a dice roll.

I watched the starcruiser vid last week and decided to do a deep dive in the starcruiser subreddit and some of the things they said/say were/are SO crazy 😭 I would recommend everyone to do two things: one, search the title of Jenny's vid into reddit and look at the various threads in different subs - just keep an eye out for the same 10 or so names popping up in every thread - and two, look at posts in the Starcruiser sub from before the video dropped and sort by most comments. They were always overly defensive and qualified every point with a "BUT it was amazing" but people there were quite a bit more candid because they hadn't yet closed ranks to defend their beloved ride from the evils of *checks notes* criticism after it crashed and burned and closed within a year and a half. Users were more willing to admit things like how they had to cram into a room to bring the price down, or how their app broke too. Like, I saw someone whose cruise was near the end of the run when it was operating at lowered capacity lose their Captain's Table experience because they reduced the two dinner seatings to one and were apparently instead offered a "Captain's Table-like experience" and I was just there like... but you got your money back for the Captain's Table, right? Right?! Something I found so frustrating in the pre vs post-video manner of speech in that sub is the cost breakdown. They were a lot more willing to admit what the blanket cost of the experience was at first. Suddenly, post-video, it's all per night. Having a per night breakdown is fine in the sense of cost analysis and comparing it to equivalent hotel prices (ie how totally insane it is) but a ridiculous metric for telling people how much you paid because ultimately this is an experience with a preset length of stay. I'll use one of their favourite analogies here: you wouldn't say you pay "$300 per act" of a Broadway show because there is no option to pay by act. You pay $600 for two acts or you don't go at all. If I tell someone I only paid $1500 per night for the Star Wars cruise it implies you can opt to pay $1500 for a single night's stay. It also conveniently leaves out those pesky "per person" differences. I also found it great that the pole was the most memed part of the video because it truly is the be all end all of Starcruiser criticism. You can call everything that went wrong bad luck, or wrinkles in the design that were fixed later, you can blame the customers, you can blame the marketing, you can blame whomever you want but fundamentally it was BAKED INTO THE PERMANENT DESIGN of the room that as long as the hotel was running at full capacity, good 20 of your guests would get an obstructed view of the dinner show by totally random chance, avoided only by paying an extra fee.

I actually gasped out loud when you mentioned your idea for a Porg animatronic in the climate simulator. That would have been sooooo adorable and people would have gone absolutely nuts over it. The story about the kids during the play testing is wild. Those kids didn't break the game--they played it! Breaking the game would have been if one of them had said, "That isn't Chewie, it's a guy in a costume! And we're not in space. We're in a building in Florida!" I continue to be frustrated by the criticism that you should have done more research on the story prior to visiting. No one should have to do hours of research before visiting a theme park, because the point of a theme park is to go and be entertained without having to do anything yourself! That's why they are also caused amusement parks--because they are there to amuse you! I saw some conversations online where someone would make that point, and then someone who was defending the Starcruiser would say something like 'what, are you saying you would never do research before you visit a place?' Yeah, sure I would, if I were visiting like, Istanbul, or Tokyo--someplace with centuries of history and a culture really different from my own. Even then I wouldn't spend hours and hours discovering every possible thing about those places. For example, when I went to Venice, I read some guides and decided which palaces and museums I wanted to visit. I didn't then spend umpteen hours reading dozens of PhD-level academic books about the art, architecture, and history of each place. I think it's ridiculous that the modern Disney experience now requires this of visitors. It's really unfair to consumers.

aghhh the bit where you were like ‘editing jenny cut this out!!’ my soul thirsts for the drama

The backup actors is something I never thought about, but it makes sense--they could have people who work in the park during the day but are on call in case somebody gets sick or cannot come in. Theater productions have an under-study for big roles. But coordinating all of that must have been hard considering that these are all-day events into the evening, not a set time for a play.

I thought the original review video about Star Cruiser was absolutely fantastic. It was refreshing to see someone like Jenny, who clearly is passionate about theme parks, and experiences etc., to give an honest review. I’m not someone especially interested in theme parks or themed hotels or experiences, but I love a deep dive into what goes wrong with these huge endeavors by companies or groups. Disney clearly has been getting away with a lot of shoddy quality for a long time and I think they truly thought they could get away with Star Cruiser. The idea of it was great, but it seems like they tried to cut corners and figured “we already have your money, so why bother.” After watching Jenny’s video, I watched a couple of other vlogs and videos about Star Cruiser and it’s quite clear which experiences were specifically for people who have platforms to review so they’d be positive. Jenny’s video was an example of what you or I would get…And again, a giant company like Disney would just say too bad if you had a bad time. Look at what happened when they found out how many followers she had when she voiced complaints about her droid going missing. Suddenly they could do something! I don’t understand why people would take an honest review of something that has nothing to do with them so seriously, but I applaud it! Keep them coming!!!

To solve the Sandro headpiece mystery, I heard someone on a podcast say the headpiece caused severe headaches for one of the actors so it was altered. I also heard on a podcast that there was the on stage actors, on site backups, AND offsite backup actors for each role. That’s an absolutely wild expense if true.

Jenny's real reason for making this video starts at 1:18:00. The topic option was a long con for an excuse to make and share the animatronics list. And we are thankful.

Watching this late too but at the part about kids loving bad guys. Can confirm. My daugher is 2+1/2 and obsessed with Spidey. She loves to grab stuff and say, "I Doc Ock, and I stealing all the Gems," or, "I'm Electro I zapp you," as often as she says, "I Spider-Girl I wanna climb the walls!"

DrearyTina

Hello Ms. Nicholson. Been out of it for a while. Loved this video, as well as the feature of my good personal friend, Charjabug. On the note of them, I'd love to hear about your visit to Pokemon worlds, where Charjabug was also present.

Aidan Mazagonwalla

Hey Jenny I'm glad to hear that you liked Kennywood, even if you didn't even ride the Phantom. That's my home park and I love the weird mix of historical and modern rides. It's a shame you didn't get to ride the insane Garfield boat ride, though—I think you would have lived for the absurdity

Jonathan Unger

All these viddo concepts are great! I'm here for any video you do!

I think that one reason I was interested (and maybe a lot of other people as well), besides the fact that you have covered other theme parks and their shortcomings in hilarious detail is that as a Star Wars fan I was super excited about this (Galactic Star Cruiser) when it was first announced. Then, disappointed when I saw how much it cost and how short the stays were. Then, bemused when it was killed so quickly. I knew Disney wasn't going to admit why the real reasons it actually failed, and I also knew that all the shills out there who only talked about how great it all was when it opened would offer no insight into what happened. Watching your video was like a true crime documentary - it was the perspective of someone who WANTED things to be good, but is honest enough to admit when they aren't. You didn't go in with the intent to just shit on what they were doing, because you have a long history of being a theme park and Star Wars fan. I knew this was going to be the most truthful attempt to participate and then explain why it all went sideways. The fact that it was YOU meant it was going to be delivered with humor and wouldn't be mean-spirited.

Karl Wiggins

Wait…would Jenny really make a Barbie movie video when Ted Nivison already released one not that long ago? At this point she could just do a response to that one…which I would absolutely watch on the Patreon

SONNY ECLIPSE MENTIONED!!! THAT'S MY GOAT!!!
