Ramble: Best and Worst Business Decisions in Walt Disney Company History

Lllllllet'ssss get ready to rambllllleeeeee (this is a reference to the film Dumbo)

Ramble: Best and Worst Business Decisions in Walt Disney Company History

Comments

In 2009 I went to Disney World on a trip with my high school marching band. My friends and I rode the movie ride, and when we got to the Casablanca scene, the animatronics were moving, but the audio wasn’t working. The cast member in our vehicle (a boat, I think?) did some great improv that was like ‘so, fun fact, most people don’t know this, but Casablanca was originally a silent film!’ So, shout out to all of the cast members, who are the true spirit of Disney.

“Swiss Family Robinson-specific business decisions”

Miles Nerenberg

Everything’s “worse in Florida” lol

Bryce Zubriski

The flapping Dumbo ears are hypnotic 🐘

This is a billion years late but I was begging my family members this afternoon to remember the Frontierland fry cart and no one did. And then Jenny mentioned it in this video!

Nicky

I’m giggling at the concept of Pirates having only a 15 minute wait bc in WDW it’s literally always 45-60 minutes 😭

Noelle Q

I LOVE your Orange Bird loungefly. He’s so cute!

Penny Cain

I remember Rocket Rods! I went to Disneyland in 1998 with my dad and cousin and we all really liked it--my dad even said it was his favorite ride. It's too bad it wasn't sustainable, but I guess now I'm extra grateful I got to ride it.

Theresa

I think another thing about the OBSERVATRON besides just maintenance is that when it’s moving it looks like a cool ride so people were always asking where the line was for it. Then you’d be like oh, yeah that’s not a ride it’s just a cool moving thing to look at. People would be bummed because it looked cooler and more fun than Astro Orbiters to begin with.

Natalie Stromberg

That’s so scary! I’m glad your sister is okay. The kind of ride Jenny is referring to is a little different however. It’s not a water slide, it’s more of a theme park kind of water ride. The reason it’s so dangerous is bc if that kind of raft capsizes, folks are actually strapped into the raft, so it’s nearly impossible to get out.

Brenna Walton

about the dangeous "rafting-style" rides mentioned at the end of the video: circa 2009, my family rode one of these at Blizzard Beach in Disney World (after some googling, I believe the ride is called Teamboat Springs), and my younger sister jumped off the raft near the end of the ride because she thought she'd be able to swim in the water. She was trapped under the raft and thought she was going to drown. Thankfully no permanent injuries, although her legs got seriously scratched up with a lot of blood. My parents were obviously completely terrified. It was a long time ago and I was young so my recollection is foggy but I believe the cast members were helpful and supportive even though it was obviously entirely my sister's fault. Looking back after Jenny's video, wow, I'm glad nothing more serious happened...

I perked up when you were about to explain why Marvel campus sucked but you skimmed over it :(

Lapsedfanmarv

I was in the Tokyo Disneyland around a month ago, and the Jungle Cruise there still has people, including the shrunken heads guy, and I was there very much like... are you ALLOWED to do that?!

Martin

The Disneyland Paris India Jones rollercoaster gave my entire family back pain for the rest of our France trip

izzsegu

The conclusion of this video was a brilliant piece of foreshadowing.

Wartortle

I have no idea why, upon opening disneyland paris, THIS was one of the attractions they decided to import ?

notacrazyperson

In Disneyland Paris, the « Cabane des Robinson » is still Robinson themed, running and a fun treehouse even though not a kid has known what a « Swiss Robinson » even is for 25 years and the park is barely older than that. I have vivid memories of telling my mom « but, wasnt Crusoe alone ? » and her going « yeah, its about another set of robinson from a show from when i was very small »

notacrazyperson

Seriously I was so obsessed with the Disney fairies growing up, I would re-read the books and re-Watch the movies obsessively

Gabby

That rant on loungefly is what I've been screaming for literal years. PLEATHER IS GARBAGE! it's landfill straight off the assembly line and paying a high price for it is pointless. Leather wears, pleather tears!

TalkieSoundBox

Love hearing the List

Avi the project

What was the term used? I missed it. Maybe Natives?

Richard R.

Hey! Just an FYI, most people prefer the term “indigenous” :)

Sloan

but as soon as she mentioned the log flume ride at the end i was like oh god it's one of those..... they are so dangerous and it sucks bc they were always my favorite as a kid bc i love swimming and waterslides but for the love of god they need to be outlawed. they are sososososo dangerous. i wish more people knew so they could be safer

air_infector

my dad has an entire spreadsheet that lays out everything that matters in the MCU timeline and he is the person who is consuming every part of it. right now he's watching spectacular spiderman and he's starting the MCU over but with x-men this time

sawyer tsaregorodtseva

The Thunder River Rapids accent was so culturally traumatic as an Australian, we don't have a huge theme park industry so even without the sheer horror of that accident it was shocking to find out there was a death on a ride. They thought the victims were from my city for a few days - and we don't have that many people, so most people are at 3 degrees of separation at most. I remember sitting up at night wondering if it was someone I knew.

Such an amazing video that only us get to see it feels wild.

I think this comment is under the wrong post accidentally but I fully agree. I think the sarcophagus added something special.

d0gm0nster

The jaystation part of the video made me cry laughing. A few times I had to pause the video, like to collect myself. then I'd notice the sarcophagus in the corner and lose my shit all over again lolll

helen sinning

Watching the “making of” videos for TROS it’s clear that a crazy amount of love/work/talent etc. went into it (all the stuff about the John Williams cameo is really lovely). But then the movie was sunk by truly awful story decisions. So, I also wonder if another year and a half could have course corrected that nonsense?

Audrey lopata

jeez now you're making me think of the crazy alternate reality where Disney delays TROS by six months, can't release it due to the pandemic, continues working on it for another year, and it ends up becoming the event movie to end all event movies by letting the anticipation build until end of 2021 when they release the film in theaters as a way of inaugurating Disney films' return to theaters after the pandemic. Imagine if it was the exact same film, that'd be so bad. But if they used the time well and made it a better film, it could have saved so much and Star Wars would still be a great franchise that I actually care about.

Mel Vitta

I think Jenny is overseas so it might be delayed this month

Kyla M

are we not getting a february patreon video, or did i miss something? hope all is well!

wuough. dahs veelargehauss

tumbleweed🍂

any word on the feb ramble? i feel annoying for asking but it seems like they’ve been coming out later and later in the month.

Lauren M

you’re the first person i’ve subscribed to patreon on, and i’m loving it so far! especially the long videos haha. i’d love to see another disneyland vlog, i eat those up lol also i am never riding a river rapids ride again that’s terrifying!

nocctea

It might be annoying for you for these to get really long but as a viewer I love it. I could listen to you talk forever, you have great perspective

Zack

They can pry my mini backpack from my cold, dead millennial hands. I feel too old to be rocking loungeflys but I still like my normal black fake leather one

Krista Frauenfelder

I knew exactly what h&m backpack you were talking about before you showed the picture, that shit lasted me FOREVER. and then it started shedding constantly! if I bring it out now, it leaves little black faux leather pieces everywhere. it was my go-to.

Fun fact: when I was being trained for guest show operations for Fantasmic at Disneyland, they told me that they always have tetanus shots at the ready for every show. Because if any performers need to jump in the water to exit the show if something goes wrong, they need to be immediately checked for tetanus because of the amount of metal stuff in the water. So yeah falling in that nasty water would be terrifying.

Mandi Schmidt

Current DLR CM in a role where I see a lot of feedback from Guests and every single thing you have to say about Genie+ is incredibly accurate. I hate that “service” so much and have only seen it trickle down to further degradation in the experience for Guests and CMs alike, tbh. (Would absolutely love to see a Disneyland Vlog btw)

ohgodthepandas

“Steampunk Santa Claus” is a perfect way to describe Dreamfinder. And I am so crushed to hear that you never got to ride the original Journey Into Imagination. I hope you get your wish and they make it again, and better.

muddlewait

those elote almonds are so good

Lily

Jenny don't feel bad about your loungefly collection, Ive seen people with a room full

Alexandria Ritz

You're the expert on your business, but I'm curious why you've chosen not to any of your editing? Especially with regards to the people-blurring, which sounds really tedious and frustrating. (Haven't watch the ramble yet, just a comment in response to what you've said in your last couple of rambles)

Nel Meyrink

Yes to more vlogs please! As a Brit who can't visit these places, I absolutely love seeing them vicariously, especially through expert eyes. (I've watched the Starcruiser footage more times than I care to admit!)

Candice

Autograph books were so fun as a kid. My sister and I got them when we went as kids and it's one of the things I remember the most. We got a ton of characters and we even got the waitress from the restaurant we went to after the park to sign it. It's such a key part of that memory that I can't imagine that day without it.

purplehayes

Princess dining exists at Disneyland! it’s at Napa Rose and it’s like Club 33 meal prices lmao they definitely need an option that’s not $130 per person

Finding out that they closed the Great Movie Ride was such a surreal experience for me. I remember riding it twice when I was a kid. I grew up super sheltered so I’d never seen most of the movies that were being referenced, but my parents let me and my siblings go on it anyway. It felt like there was a whole world of cinema out there waiting for me once I was old enough to watch whatever movies I want. The Alien scene and the scene with all the Mummies with glowing n eyes scared the shit out of me too. I know for adults it probably was lame but as a kid it really did make me feel like I was experiencing the magic of movies for the first time.

Dalton

Interesting, I didn't know about the "signing off" process. Kind of terrifying that Disney has trained employees that could effortlessly commit signature fraud, haha.

Semilocon

Ship of Theseus really got me lol

Petie

Have you considered hiring an editor for more menial video tasks. U talked about blurring stranger's faces being a pain. An editor could do that leaving u time to do important stuff

Loungeflys are the new beanie babies

Mary Strawberry

Go to Disneyland Paris if you ever get the chance! I was fortunate enough to go for a day this past year, and I could go on my own hours long ramble about how great that park was. It was so beautiful and lush with lots of attention to details, and in May the weather was perfect and there was hardly anyone there! Phantom Manor was awesome, and they had so many little interesting places to explore. Their Pirates has the best "indoor but feels outdoor" queue, and their restaurant inside the ride Captain Jack's is extremely well themed. It was the best day I've had at a Disney Park ever! I unfortunately couldn't figure out a way to go to Efteling on our trip, and I doubt I'll be going back to Europe in the foreseeable future, so I can't wait to hear the Jenny take on it some day! :)
