Ramble: Magic Beyond Words: A JK Rowling Story
Added 2021-10-04 21:52:33 +0000 UTC
Last time I used vimeo pro it didn't work for like at least 80% of you guys but this is our only option because A&E is trying to turn this into a giant copyright dispute on youtube and even if I felt like suing them over a patreon video the video would stay blocked for at least an additional 30 days (and also my account would receive a strike and lose some uploading capabilities, and I would then have to also dispute the strike).
Although they don't advertise this Vimeo appears to try to prevent people from watching any content on mobile without using their app or logging in on browser. If you don't want to make an account, you should be able to view it fine on desktop without logging in!
That owl ornament is definitely a repurposed necklace because I had the exact same one in middle school lmao

I really like this format but you need to lower the audio of the thing you’re watching or pause. It makes it really hard to hear you as the film is talking over you.

this movie is so funny because it implies jkr has no imagination, she just parrots everything she sees in her life

I'm crying because as a kid I also thought that JK Rowling wrote her first book on napkins because she couldn't afford paper

I just noticed... The book that 'Joanne' is holding when she first gets the book in the mail is definitely not the edition of the book she would have received. Rather than the long-bearded Dumbledore featured on the back of the book, at first it had a young short-bearded brunette wizard guy on the back. Not nitpicky at all, right~? (And of course the next shot shows that very information in a 'goofs' bit. Whoops!)
2022-03-16 06:06:37 +0000 UTC
This was a nightmare to listen to, I really wish you had paused more because you talking at the same time with the movie just turns into unbearable overlapping noise, jiminy christmas my head hurts after like five minutes

i love this format of patreon video, but it is a little hard to hear. I think the clip itself had weird sound mixing too. It would be really helpful if you could have captions/turn down the volume of the clip/pause it when you talk :)

You sound like the radical extremist tbh. What has she even said thats 'radical'
2021-12-07 16:52:44 +0000 UTC
tragically, i have seen this movie, years and years ago

Also went to uni in Edinburgh! When I took my fiancée up there we went on a little tour of Potter related places 😃

2021-10-18 21:42:25 +0000 UTC
This is so funny. I go to uni in Edinburgh, where she wrote the books and after you walk around for a while you realize that it was all just inspired by actual things and history in the city. Examples: one of the student union buildings is called Potterow (someone just graffitied over it and it says 'otterow' right now - which I love). Also, there's a castle on a rocky hill in the center of the city, the same way Hogwarts looks in the movie - that is visible from the cafe she wrote in. I used to work as a ghost tour guide and told historical stories about witches and showed tourists around the graveyard that has a bunch of names Rowling copied.
With this film showing her walking around and getting inspiration - if they filmed it in Edinburgh, it might have been accurate!

it really is a shame that jkr went off the deep end, it's truly awful for someone to use a platform of her size for harm like that

When I was younger I was so inspired by JKR because of where she came from and I always wanted to be a writer, and honestly it felt like such a betrayal for her to be a TERF. I'd like to see a sequel to this called the Radicalization of JK Rowling in which it's explained how she was sucked in by the transphobic movement to become who she is.

2021-10-12 01:28:41 +0000 UTC
This was hilarious - particularly because I'm a children's author and I kept imagining how bizarre it would be if someone made a movie like this about me. Like there are lots of random references to real things in my books, but someone trying to guess which ones would never get it right. However I did genuinely have one of those moments where a teacher said I was rubbish at writing, so I'm sure any future Lifetime movie directors will be pleased with that...
Also was absolutely not expecting the guest appearance from my 2010s owl necklace lol

I think Barbie is on hold until Evermore is out, Beanie Babies is shelved for a while until she can figure out in what direction she wants to take the video, and sounds like Evermore is delayed for a bit until Evan Hansen, which sounds like a less production-intensive video.
Could be wrong on those though, my memory isn't the best. Could be that Barbie was shelved due to copyright fears, though I don't think so.

Okay this is a tiny stupid nitpick, but I'm curious if this movie was written by North Americans, because of the thing with the "because you went to a public school" scene about her not getting accepted into Oxford(?) Don't Brits call their private schools that you have to pay tuition for "public schools" and their public schools that are funded by taxes and are free "state schools" and so going to a public school in the UK wouldn't be a signal of being lower class..?

"The universe spoon-feeds them the book."
The specific details of Rowling's life are "mad-libbed" into this story framework, for the most part. So it's "about" her.
This story-frame is like candy to people who want Rowling's level of fame. They see it as a checklist. This isn't supposed to accurately depcit the author's life as much as sell an Author's Dream to naive literaries.
And the "ironic in hindsight" moments are in support of this - when other people check our logic and plans, this frames them as "ironic in hindsight" mini-villains to overcome or surpass in this authorial hero's journey. They're not giving a reality check against our naive worldview - instead, they're the naive ones, questioning the wisdom of the Great Author. It's almost Ayn Randian in its expectation for everyone to bow before the Author/Architect.
Mental illness is a hell of a drug.

Yeah generally public schools are the 'posh' ones that charge fees to go to them, as opposed to state schools. Oxford is difficult to get in to, you have to do additional entry tests. It's been criticised in the past for only allowing in students from rich backgrounds, though they are trying to change that image (since university tuition fees in England are capped at £9250 per year currently for all universities, which you'd also get a student loan for which has pretty good repayment terms etc, so it's not only the rich that could afford Oxfords fees etc). High school in England finishes at 16 when you will do GCSE exams in around 8/9ish subjects and then college is generally from 16-18, where you'll either do one subject full time as a vocational qual (usually with fewer/no exams, more portfolio work etc) or A-levels, where you choose 3 (sometimes 4) subjects to do with exams at the end. Some universities (like Oxford) will only really take A-level students as an entry requirement, though most universities will take either A-levels or the equivalent level vocational qual. And that is your crash course on the English education system lol I work in a college myself and deal with university applications.

I think Public School in the UK means the opposite of in the US. They are boarding schools like Hogwarts (minus the magic). Although I don’t see why that would prevent her getting into Oxford. In any case I thought it was driven by scores on standard tests, I remember English friends telling me about the pressure on “A levels” which I think were the tests on graduating what we call high school.

This was filmed in BC! A lot of the actors are Canadian which is why some of the accents aren't great. The bookstore she has the event at near the end is Munro's Books in Victoria and I think when she's mocking Portuguese cheating guy's accent they're down Helmcken Alley in Bastion Square (which is apparently very haunted so.......spoooooooky). I didn't know this movie existed but it was fun to hear your commentary and a nice surprise to see some familiar landmarks too :)

A fun addendum to the Biopic drinking game is having your friends decide who would play you and what thing you would happen to look at that would inspire the direction your lifes work would take.

• I don't know if it was intentional but I loved seeing the origin of the chummy low-class accent she uses in her books, in the form of her kindly landlord.
• I love the wonder in her friends voice when she's like "Wow, you've written seven books of an unpublished fantasy novel series?". In real life, she'd probably be trying to mask her pity and thinking "God, PLEASE don't ask me to read them"
• Maybe they shouldn't have included her coming up with problematic banking goblins by suggesting that's how she sees actual bankers, as horrible mouth breathing sub-humans.
• Gotta love the continuation of the 'creativity = looking at things' trend in biopics.

Hoo boy they went hard into every biopic cliche, even "Don't you know that before Joanne attends a film premiere she has to remember her entire life?" But Jenny's reactions remained super fun.
Sorry this one was so hard to get out. Maybe it's for the best you didn't save it for main channel if A&E are gonna be jerks about it.

i think a gregory macquire bipoic would be excellent bc the whole book is just. what would the wizard of oz be like if they lived in a complex religious, social, and political landscape and everything was depressing. quirky moments could be depressing clips of world events interspersed with random wizard of oz references
Gussie Ruck
2021-10-05 00:26:44 +0000 UTC
My favorite part of this movie is how it tries to convince you that J.K. had all seven books planned before even publishing the first one, but I guess they also didn't show a Korean lady with a tattoo of a snake or something who tells Joanne she's cursed to do her job forever or something. So y'know this biopic wasn't written with any input from her.

Some writers had interesting lives but not necessarily the most famous ones you'd make a movie about (like Doris Lessing had an interesting life but no one would make a movie about her lol). Also the creative process is so hard to represent visually! So everything becomes painfully literal

Idk why anyone watches movies like this for purposes other than comedy, like genuinely what is interesting to people about just watching a creator come up with their ideas when the execution of the ideas is the whole point. i also just think stories about writers are boring in general but like... especially real people writers whose work you could just read instead

Woah I’ve actually seen this before!!! Absolutely wild, I completely forgot about it. Loved your commentary but if you ever do a similar format video I think it would be cool if you either paused the movie or lowered the volume when talking about it because it was kinda hard for me to process both sounds at once; I had to backtrack a lot. I hope I don’t sound to whiny, I really love all you do! :D

So glad that you were able to find a way to post the ramble! Thanks for covering this wild movie that I had no idea existed!
2021-10-04 23:15:07 +0000 UTC
Best part of the movie for sure, but I am honestly amazed that one of the specific parts of the Harry Potter mythos this film chose to draw attention to was the Goblin bankers; a part of the franchise which, even a decade ago, was already being seen as problematic, and which has, since then, only grown more so. It'd be like if the movie showed Jo witnessing a parent cruelly enslaving their children, and been whimsically inspired to create House Elves.
PS, as a Brit, I can confirm, this is 100% accurate, owls are everywhere.

I don't get how the green screen effects are so poor in those vehicle interior scenes. I can't tell if they were even trying to match up the lighting sources. I hardly ever watch cable TV. Is this normal SFX quality for TV movies? Have I been spoiled by recent streaming shows?

Also, there was some major problem with the Internet this morning. Apps like Facebook, WhatsApp and others were down and some are still down. I don't think people are certain what the problem is but it seems to be a problem with the DNS servers that route from a URL to an IP address so if there is a problem for some people it may be related to that.

The embed works for me! Your commentary while the movie was playing was hard to hear but this was so funny, I can't believe how crass these cheapo biopic movies are. It really doesn't do its subject any favours by implying that JKR just like... saw in real life everything that was in the books and transposed it into the book with no creative transformation of any kind. People also don't talk about how good Rowling was at self-marketing - she took her rags-to-riches life and crafted a really media friendly narrative out of it, she knew how to sell herself and she was clearly very business savvy. Now that she's A Problematic Author she's lost control of her narrative somewhat, it's not really hurting her career though.

I'm sure this will only be the first of many things that annoy me about this film, but as a British person I feel I must interject to ask what the hell kind of train she's riding that the catering trolley is stocked entirely with whimsical sweets, and not the usual British railway selection of some crisps, a couple of sandwiches, and an insane quantity of beer for them to be serving on public transport.
