Ramble: Movies I expected to hate, which surprised me

This is such an old video, but I only just watched it, and in your discussion of Disney sequels that were better than expected, I feel that Lion King 1 and 1/2 needs to be mentioned, that movie was genuinely good to me.

Obviously I’m super late to this video, BUT on the topic of Rainbow Rocks- it is an absolute CRIME that you discontinued friendship is witchcraft before making a rainbow rocks episode 😭 you are so right that it’s the best thing to come from G4, and I feel like it would’ve lent itself to FIW so well, and I would’ve LOVED to see your characterization of the dazzlings!

Can’t wait for the mystery lodge video whenever that comes out. I remember as a kid I was there for the opening of it and being super excited for it but now I have absolute no memory of what it even is/was.

Not only did I like Sinister 2, but I thought the first Sinister wasn't that great. Definitely didn't live up to the hype. I thought it was boring and didn't remember a thing about it, which was why when I watched Sinister 2 I had no idea how the movies/ghost children related, which made it honestly pretty compelling. It's still not fantastic, but it's entertaining and weird, and fun to watch the kids casually interact with the ghosts. Also a case of people being murdered in over the top, gruesome (sinister, if you will) ways that only characters in horror movies would bother doing.

I would say i'm a bit more interested in the flow chart over the trevorrow script, as I myself have been playing different ways ep ix could have gone with similar story beats, and how just a few tweaks could have made it a much better movie. I keep forgetting about it and then just waking up and turning to my roommate and saying stuff like: why did they introduce so many new characters in the last film it derailed so many character arcs of existing characters!!? Why did they kill Hux like a dog?! Why have Lando save everyone in the end?! etc etc. I'm going a little insane with it because a lot of the plot fixes seem so obvious and yet they messed it up anyway somehow.

Id really like the second jeff the killer video but I 100% understand if you're not comfortable making it if it ends up with harassment of the author. For fanfic books and actual fanfic maybe only do stuff that's so old that the author has stopped posting or just dont name the author.
But I guess it might not be as much fun if it isn't about modern stuff. My chemical romance at hogwarts is absurd but maybe not as interesting to people now as one direction during the purge. A second Johnstone book would be sweet tho. Flow chart idea also sounds awesome. Tho tbh you've never made a video I didn't like so 🤷

A good movie and a bad movie can share the same plot, characters, and theme, so wouldn't high-quality horror be defined by how well it freaks us out, whatever its theme may be?
Or are you hoping to tease out the biases of movie critics?
Steve Ray
2020-02-04 06:43:13 +0000 UTC
I would love a crazy ep. 9 Script Doctor, and I would suggest that, if possible, you create a conspiracy cork board with all the plot points, and colored yarn showing what does and doesn't go together. I think it would be a more fun visual aid than a spreadsheet.

Super excited for all the content you've mentioned. I having a feeling the SW Land cooking video will be super fun because it'll be sort of a disaster -- in a good way (if you know what I mean). I've also always wanted to know more about Knott's (haven't never been). And I think others have mentioned this, but you could incorporate the "SW9 Spreadsheet Doctor" vid with elements from Colin's leaks (ie, "If you want to get to D7 from H4, you'll have to use this idea from Colin's ... Column ... Colin's Column. Geez.)

Summer Eldridge
2020-02-03 19:23:45 +0000 UTC
Fair enough, but I think you see what I'm getting at. These movies are treated like really high quality, which stems from their use of technique not usually found in horror and how they're marketed. I think a discussion about why this is happening, if the high quality label is earned or not (especially by looking at plot, characters, and theme), and maybe a silly "this is my prestige horror idea" would be a fun video.

2020-02-03 13:03:21 +0000 UTC
Yup, it was great; it was pretty funny and I found myself tearing at the friendship and such. My sister knew all the songs (which were fantastic!) and really enjoyed it. Couldn't've been a much better way to spend a birthday afternoon. Really grateful for the recommendation.

4 minutes in and jokes on you, Jenny, because As Above So Below is my favorite horror movie and I'm so glad you mentioned it.
All the creepy imagery is actually incredibly well researched/conceptualized from an alchemical symbolism perspective. It feels like almost every beat in the story is a nod to those well versed in occult iconography and the concept of a magnum opus (like...the alchemical "great work", not the colloquial use of the phrase)

i love your episode ix flow chart idea SO much, i had a similar feeling after the movie ended of "i dont know any single change i could have made to make the movie better, everything is conditional" and i would really love to hear your take on how you would've worked around certain plot points! but i'm also really excited for all of the other ideas you're planning especially the knott's berry farm one because i love seeing you talk about things you're passionate about and also star wars land 2 of course, so no pressure re: more episode ix content!

I would love to see a collab between them. Like maybe Jenny could still go through and make jokes about the book, but it would be interspersed with Neesha roasting Jenny's earlier work. Really excited for another Johnstone video (hopefully one of the cowboy books), and the Trevorrow video because it's always funny when people dunk on Collin Trevorrow, and I'd be really into a Sinister 2 video. Also, as far as Jeff the Killer, if somebody submitted that as a ramble topic, would that be a good workaround? It would be a shame not to have a normal video of it, but at least it could be something without causing any trouble for the author.
Steven Clark
2020-02-01 11:34:28 +0000 UTC
as far as bad movies that are surprisingly fun, masters of the universe. Frank Langella does such a fantastic job in a bad film that he elavates the quality of the whole thing, also the behind the scenes stories make it surprising that it's watchable at all.
in regard to episode 9, I vote for a Trevorrow episode 9 video, his idea isn't great but it's still better than what JJ did and George Lucas original script for star wars wasn't great either so with decent script editing I think that could have become a decent film. JJ's film on the other hand, where do you even start to script edit it. I've got solid ideas on how to make batman V superman work as a film or even star trek into darkness but the rise of skywalker, I'd just have not made that film, I'd have had no Palpatine outside of a reference to perhaps him and the empire inspiring snoke in some regard. I'd have had force ghost Luke play a more significant role, specifically having him interact with Kylo and following up on the line see you around kid and I'd have had an alliance between hux and the knights of ren be the villains of the story perhaps with hux planning to betray them when he's Supreme leader.

Unfortunately the messages/comments about the author of Insanity: Jeff the Killer were true. She had watched the video and she had commented on it (there's a post with a picture of the comment in the community section of this Patreon somewhere) and she did make a video about her thoughts in 2018: https://youtu.be/lNyfoeQpO_E
While looking for that video I also found this update in 2019: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEgDxt0f7uU
In light of all this, and as much as it sucks to say this (Insanity 2: Welcome to the Mansion has been a hugely anticipated video and kind of a running joke on this Patreon is how often it's been brought up in rambles as one of the future videos, I think only the lightsaber video has been in the works for longer), I don't think there's a way to make the video while respecting the wishes of the author. She doesn't want her work out there, the exposure is obviously to this day causing her hurt and harassment.
The one way I could see to kinda resolve this would be if she was somehow a collaborator on the new video. Hopefully she could be made to see that people do actually enjoy her work, that she made something creative and funny and quite surprising that was very entertaining, even if it wasn't in the way she intended. It could also be an opportunity to talk about the negative effect of Getting Big on the Internet and how to deal with that, and the importance of people in general to just be more nice out here.
But yeah, it's a really unpleasant situation and it's a shame it's come to this but it is what it is. The internet just really sucks sometimes.

I haven't reached the end of the ramble yet but hearing Jenny drag Equestria Girls was so life-affirming; it was my youngest sister's first introduction to My Little Pony so for the longest time she believed it was the original version of the show and that the pony stuff was secondary, which was a long struggle to correct and even now is incomplete. So to hear that Jenny hates the original movie and the design and all that... It really helps.
As I said, though, I haven't finished the video so I'm posting this at a risky moment. The whole premise of the ramble is that the movie she's about to discuss is actually kinda good, so I might unpause this and just immediately have to hear praises for the very thing I wrote this to complain about. Can't resist a good gamble, though, so bring it on.
Edit: Okay so now I'm gonna have to watch Rainbow Rocks with my sister and also I think I like Equestria Girls. Also wow that revelation about the My Little Pony movie, gotta revisit the video with that information in mind.

The end of As Above So Below is lifted from Dante's Inferno. I think it was a good idea, and I liked it, but I think the filmmakers gambled on people "getting it" and lost.
