I'm going to be experiencing the Ready Player One phenomenon entirely through Jenny's videos, I expect, which will be the best way to experience it. As someone who was alive in the eighties I find the recent nostalgia for that period very puzzling. Not that it didn't produce interesting things but it's mainly a horrible, bleak, bigoted time in my memory and I thought we'd all quietly decided to pretend it never happened.

Spielberg does have a good rep of taking bad or broken stories and turning them into great films. 'Minority Report' is a typical Philip K. Dick story, well written but also random, haphazard and trailing off into tangents, but Spielberg managed to shape a rather solid story out of that farrago. I just can't understand what he saw in the actual book of 'Ready Player One' to want to make a film out of it.

I do agree that the book was terrible. When I read the first couple of pages, I thought: 'How clever. He's deliberately mocking the style of clunky, strangulated, subliterate fanfic to communicate how this kid only thinks in infantile toy and game modes'. Then it turned out this was the way the author actually writes. Then it also turned out he's a multi-million selling author, and I'm not. So, que voulez-vous?

I'm not optimistic that the movie is going to be good or anything but I do think that the references will work better in a visual medium. Rather than having to stop everything for a list of things you might remember they can just exist in the background or something. Unfortunately nerd references are the entire substance of the book so even if it works better here that only gets you so far...

Yeah it's a pretty overrated book. Thankfully the movie looks like it's taking a lot of liberties. So hopefully we won't have to watch them reenact all of War Games. As annoying as this book is for, among other things, being a series of pop culture reference lists, the irony was not lost on me when I found myself overjoyed by your mention of Teen Witch and Girls of Rock 'N Roll (and playing it at the end).
