January Ramble: Personal Style

Hey everybody! Youtube was really annoying again about successfully uploading and processing this video (are they trying to tell me I talk for too long) but here is the new ramble video, several hours later than I predicted it would be out on twitter!

I feel like this topic was a slight hot mess and consequently this has way more edits than a typical ramble video so if I've accidentally repeated myself or something I apologize!

Opposite worlds is a seriously underrated video you did. Probably the one I laughed the most at because of the content.

Robert Romero Jr

No

Thread Bomb

I wonder if Jenny is aware of Richard Ayoade?

I think I see the problem with what you describe as deadpan, sarcastic humor that might sound mean if you don't know it's a joke. The problem is that kind of humor is usually told between friends as an inside joke. If you try to take it to people who aren't on the inside of the joke, who weren't there when you and your friends started doing it and maybe set up certain key lines that you repeat to each other, it falls flat. I've heard other people before complain that people are "too sensitive" because they get confused or offended when they try to use that style of humor, but that's not really the problem at all - they don't see it as a joke because it's a joke that's meant to be for people in on it, and they've just been put in the position of being the subject of it without being in on it, and it's not even obvious whether or not there's something to be "in" on. When you do that suddenly in casual conversation with people you don't know that well, there's no real set-up to clue them in. It's something that has to be built up, like a relationship. If it helps, though, I've heard quotes in your voice when you talk. Not always, but you've done it. Adding inflection that indicates that there would be quotes if you wrote out something you're saying helps to clue people in that you didn't mean something literally. My friends and I do that a lot, adding quotes with our voices, so I can tell even over the phone when they're being facetious.

Tracy Christenson

Thanks, now I can't unhear your uhms.

Mathew Lau

It's about weight loss, I think.

Steve Ray

For the record, I've never heard of The Purge and I have no idea what it is.

Michele Coleman

I Can't Wait For The Lightsaber Video, Jenny!

Miguel Sandoval

:O you know Karl Pilkington! have you listened to the podcasts and the old XFM stuff? that stuff is my fav stuff of Karl. its all on youtube and its hilarious.

Tom Padget

I love that you are a master of understatement, sarcasm and deadpan unlike many americans!!!! We love that here in the UK, people get it a lot more. We do a lot more self-deprecating humour too.

Tom Padget

this is super interesting, I really like that you mentioned all of your older stuff too.

Tom Padget

Late to the video so this has probably been mentioned above but there it feels like there is a bigger market for sarcastic and deadpan comedy in the UK than the U.S.. I also found that with a sarcastic sense of humour it was better to keep my jokes to myself in an office environment because if people don't get it you can come across as really cutting

Joe Robinson

I watch the video because you do funny sight gags from time to time, and they're funny. I also like when you do little skits, as you did for the "Suicide Squad" video (which is how I discovered you). Your delivery makes me laugh (in a good way). P.S. Saying "I discovered you" makes me think of the Eddie Izzard thing where he talks about the British Empire. "Do you have a flag?" So that's kind of a weird mental image. P.P.S. I say "fack".

Brandon Blackmoor

I would watch a reality TV show called “Trapped in a Island with Josh Hutcherson”, that would be amazing! 😃

Mitchell Bowker

I thought of The Day Today too but I wonder if it's a bit dated now. Have you seen W1A?

JK

I'm thinking Jenny'd enjoy Chris Morris and Brass Eye/The Day Today, which are all on youtube.

Christoff Youngman

It's a very good show that I think you might appreciate given what you've said about your sense of humor. It's about a team of 8-year-olds who make movies together - very dry, conversational humor, great voice acting, charming animation and some great girl/women characters. Some of the early episodes are still on youtube, though they've been dwindling gradually. Anyway, just thought I'd rec that.

ruby jewelry on me

Obviously I enjoy your humor a great deal, that's why I'm here. But for some reason I thought this video was going to be about fashion and was a little disappointed for a second. It would be cool if you could pick up that Star Wars fashion idea again some time in the future. I keep on rewatching the Millennial Falcon one on that subject :)

R2

I think they mean why they are looking at the video instead of keeping another tab open, in reference to when she was discussing the edits.

The BabaDuck

Yeah they sucked:(, but no one else has done a video on their complete suckage. You could be the first to jump into that and suffer for your art. Like those poor actors suffered for theirs'.

Samual Holman

It was really reassuring to see you back on Movie Fights a couple weeks ago. Given the upheaval at Screen Junkies, I know I was wondering whether you'd feel comfortable enough to return.

Jared Diamond

Thanks for coming! I was really anxious for that movie fights but ultimately it was really fun

Jenny Nicholson

Tbh I loathed the first two Thor movies, I've contemplated doing a vid on them. Thor 3 was good, entirely because it was different from the first two in every way. Which I appreciated, because it was better, but on the other hand it's kind of weird to see a non-reboot basically throw out all the existing canon, personalities, entire characters, etc

Jenny Nicholson

It's bagels unless otherwise stated

Jenny Nicholson

I haven't!

Jenny Nicholson

It was cool to hear you talking about your comedy. I became a patron because I like your sense of humour. It seems to come to you very naturally, to the point that sometimes I'd wonder if you were being funny intentionally or not.

pix

for status updates, just tell us what you had for lunch every Tuesday

Zapp Rowsdower

Yes thats exactly why, not her opinion, sense of humour or quality of content or anything...

ooo Derry Girls sounds right up my alley. thanks for the heads up

ruby jewelry on me

I’ll have to check it out when series one is all available to download. Easier to get it all at once since it doesn’t air in the US.

Sam Cohn

Think advertising rights and product placements, then impossible doesn't apply very well.

Dundough Breadbox

People watch the videos because you're cute.

Caleb Garcia

I’m downloading the first series to have a look. I’d like to proselytise again for Derry Girls, which has just had the 5th of 6 episodes.

Stuart Payne

I'm trying to get these friends of mine to watch Burning Love. They've suckered me into watching this season of The Bachelor with them. So it feels like a perfect time for them to be watching that as well.

Sam Cohn

YES!!! I love that you watch Nathan for You! When you were doing Millennial Falcon, I remember thinking that your delivery during certain segments and remotes reminded me of Nathan. I don't know if that was intentional but you do it very well.

Sam Cohn

Agree. The book was a fun read for me because it’s right in my 80’s wheelhouse, but when you look past the pop culture nostalgia, it’s really not all that great. The ending was totally anti-climactic. I just can’t picture this movie being very good, for many reasons—one of which is that it had to have been impossible to get licensing rights to all the 80’a things.

Matt Winberry

Jenny, have you watched the show Home Movies?

ruby jewelry on me

Hey I know that I'm not high enough tier wise to suggest vids but are you still thinking about doin a Thor 3/all Thor movies vid? I only ask because the first two were my flaming dumpster fire intro to fandom and I'm still too scared to see the third. The first were my crack, they hurt me but I loved them.

Samual Holman

Glad to hear! The Millennial Falcon episode featuring him was one of my favs

Daniel Stephan

Hey Jenny! So I saw you on that episode of Movie Fights a little while ago, realized how much I missed you on Millennial Falcon, and decided to go watch your channel. I watched for a few hours and just recently started a Patreon account to support you. You have really inspired me to get back into creating videos! Thanks for what you do and I hope you see plenty of success

Timothy Coursen

Thirding that suggestion

You pronounce "FAQ" the best way, you don't have to spell out the letters. Plus it was cool to know you were a fan of Idiot Abroad with Karl Pilkington. If you haven't already, you should look up "The Ricky Gervais Show" that aired on HBO, most of them are on YouTube. They take segments from the XFM shows and animate them really well.

I love opposite worlds and I am hyped!

Freyja Bills

We've been talking about that for a while! It feels inevitable, it's just a matter of figuring out logistics. We're both huge theme park nerds

Jenny Nicholson

I liked this ramble, it's neat to get an insight on the thought process on the content we see.

#CollabWithSteveZaragoza

Daniel Stephan

I believe a "slightly hot mess" is also known as a "warm mess". Seconding the suggestion that you watch The Katering Show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0B0muCuY1yE

I watched every Ill conceived second, was surprised to hear someone bring it up four years after the fact. Finally my wasting of time with garbage will payoff. In this usage payoff means that I'll have a slightly better frame of reference for a YouTube video than other people.

Trevor White

I'm genuinely astounded that anyone else has seen it

Jenny Nicholson

I record late night or early morning for most of my videos, in the afternoon the sun's angled right at that window behind me - which I've recorded in spite of like once, but imo it looks weird and bugs me

Jenny Nicholson

I enjoyed it as a light read, but it really is is a terrible book. I have no idea why they're trying to make it into a blockbuster. Jenny is gong to absolutely shred it to bits.

Please tell me your going to dress up in a Purge style crazy outfit for your Purge video!

Excited to see ANY of these videos.

Daniel Paugh

I could listen to you talk all day - I love these ramble videos.

Fuck Off Patreon

God, cannot wait to see you eviscerate Ready Player One if it's as bad as I've heard. Last Jedi skits sound super fun, I always like hearing your perspective/take on Star Wars stuff.

Quilly

I watched the train wreck that was Opposite Worlds and can't wait to see you make fun of it.

Trevor White

Have you ever watched The Katering Show on YouTube? I feel like you'd really enjoy their style of humor. It is an amazing series!

Leesah

As a fellow person who wears contacts. I just assumed whenever you wore glasses in your videos, it was recorded late at night.

Blue Corn

I love your dry sense of humor and delivery.

Mister CPU

You like "Nathan For You" too?!?!? I genuinely thought I was the only person still watching that show. How much did you love the Season 4 finale? I think I felt the entire spectrum of emotions while watching it.

Andrea Federica

In regards to a guest question on videos, for a Kylo/Rey skit, you could have someone on their webcam play opposite you. The different background would really play up that Force FaceTime ability. Or at least if you’re going to play both Kylo and Rey, shoot one in the bedroom, and the other in a living room or something weird.

Bill Lehecka

Ylvis was right all along. You just gotta put the right amount of pressure on it.

Joe Bloe

I've thought about it before, the one thing that's made me not do it so far is 1) Bailey and I don't actually visit each other's apartments that often; we live about an hour from each other and usually meet to hang out halfway between us. She's only actually been to my apartment one time since I moved here. 2) For having any guest in general, I think it could really prolong the editing process. With another person added you can't plan ahead what's going to be said so much, so I'd imagine I'd end up recording a much higher volume of raw footage and then have to try to edit it into more of a structure. For example I feel like a natural topic for a guest video would be a reading of something, and when I do readings by myself I read the book once first, highlight the stand-out lines and make notes in the margins, so when I go through again I'm reading the passages I already chose as important, and I'm only shooting about an hour of raw footage. Reading a full thing with another person real-time might as much as triple that even if it's only Troll-length.

Jenny Nicholson

Yes, it's not the Purge video I had in mind but I wouldn't mind doing an additional Purge video that was a One Direction fanfic. It's a very bizarre subgenre

Jenny Nicholson

OKAY

Jenny Nicholson

Question, do you think you'll ever have other people appear in your videos? What you're donig now is great. I'm curious, though, how one of your videos would work if you had another person to bounce off of. Maybe your friend, Bailey?

Andrew Zimmer

Oh, and the best standup (in English): Dara Ó Briain.

Stuart Payne

I think what makes British humour different from Irish is that the British has the extra dry layer on top from being reserved. If something is off in the background then due to the societal pressure of keeping calm and all that a fuss won't be made, or if any mention is made then it'll be to be seen as not a big issue or a "More tea vicar?"

Daniel Staniforth

There's a large potential for Purge videos. From "What I would do in the Purge", "Top 10 Ways to Survive the Purge" to "Top 10 Lamest Crimes to Commit During the Purge" or "The Purge: How to Plan Your Outfit for Patriotic Murder Day"

Daniel Staniforth

I'm really glad the whole comforter issue finally got cleared up. I was seriously considering cancelling my donation.

Dan Cole

I’m excited for your reality TV video despite not watching the show. I think it’s a format that doesn’t get enough storytelling critiques. Will your Purge video touch on the “One Direction in the Purge” phenomena, because I think it should at least have a mention? I CANNOT WAIT for your Ready Player One video as I tossed that book about a quarter of the way in. I don’t toss books lightly, I’ve read a lot of garbage, but I just could not justify reading any more of it. I will see the movie (despite hating the story), because I think I may get a kick out of the visuals, but, argh, that book.

Kit (karmaplace)

January is so long, it’s now bleeding into February.

Bill Lehecka

People mention British humour but Jenny often reminds me of Irish (or Irish/British) humour like Father Ted, the I.T. Crowd, Black Books. What she said about something a little off happening in the background. 'Looks like rain, Ted' sort of thing, where the world's not quite as it should be. Slightly magical.

Stuart Payne

Oh shit, we're allowed to pressure you? MAKE MORE VIDEOS!

Joe Bloe

Do you like other British comedians? I'm thinking of Stewart Lee or Armando Iannucci.

JK

Did you enjoy shows like Burning Love or American Vandal?

Daniel Staniforth

From your description I think you almost have a British style sense of humour

Daniel Staniforth

This was my topic. And I've been requesting it since the beginning. And today is my birthday. Everything's coming up Milhouse! Glasses totally ruined it, though... Thanks, Jenny.
