I would agree with Simon Dovey here that anthropology has never been anything except a tool for the ruling class to shape narratives that support their interests. Obviously the work of Fergal and Marcus is apt here as well.

I don’t know if he cites Obama’s mom specifically, but Mike Davis’ Planet of Slums has an illuminating section on how this ‘anarcho-traditionalist incipient capitalist’ valorization of poverty in the Global South bridged the liberal developmentalist era of the World Bank with its SAP Phantom Menace era. It’s a good time to reflect on this all but orphaned and occluded paradigm, since Mohammed Yunus, microcredit pope, is still lord protector of Bangladesh. These legacies are sure to be churned up in the Indopacific gyre in the next year or two.
