2. Regarding Latin America: it really does seem to be the primary front for Trump’s continentalists. Locking the region into a new continental system is necessary not only because of the resources at stake (steel, coal, oil, lithium) but in order to eliminate any possibility that China might compensate for the loss of American business by expanding consumer markets elsewhere. Bukele is the prototype for the kind of nationalism required to make this work—carceral, contemptuous of legality and constitutional limits, fuelled by drug and gambling money, and uninterested in building national institutions. Ecuador’s first family are both elite level compradors for American corporate interests, and heavily implicated in cocaine trafficking. Expect more gangsterismo in this vein, and not only in the global south.

Children in my community were exempted for being ‘too intelligent,’ ‘too attractive,’ and ‘too aryan,’ as per the documentary record. My own family supposedly escaped a stint at Shubenacadie when my great grandfather brandished a shotgun at an Indian agent. I’m incredulous about that story: his eldest later graduated high school at 13, and died under strange circumstances at a prep school in Montreal. The exemptions and winnowing process really bring to mind the lebensborn program in Nazi occupied Poland. No doubt there was some underlying racial theory governing all this.
