[#159] SHIP OF FOOLS: The Dracularity of Titanic, Part One

Dimitri and Khalid take an overly ambitious, ill-advised deep dive into the immense dracularity surrounding the Titanic disaster of 1912, including:

The resurgence of Titanic conspiracy theories following the June 2023 Titan disaster, predictive programming in Hauptmann’s “Atlantis” and “The Wreck of the Titan; or, Futility”, muckraker and Spiritualist William T. Stead’s cursed mummy rumor, a lost bejeweled copy of the possibly cursed Rubaiyat of Omar Kayyam, the Wreck of the Edward Fitzgerald, the Somerset Man, the role of Marconi’s wireless telegraph, the inexplicably sus behavior of SS Californian Captain Stanley Lord, Morgan’s men covering up the Californian’s duplicity, the shameful survival of White Star Line owner J. Bruce Ismay, what JP Morgan was or wasn’t up to, and “The Rescue of the Third Class of the Titanic: A Revisionist History”. Part one of two.

i actually heard a few interesting observations for some of the seemingly-shortsighted decisions elsewhere. obviously it's all a matter of "what if" and doesn't necessarily interesect with the content of the show, but i thought they were interesting. the first is about the attempt to dodge. have heard a few people apparently of-note posit that running into the iceberg headon would have actually sunk it _faster_ because the iceberg would have crushed the bow of the ship all the way into the bridge due to its sheer size and the ship's momentum, and the shockwaves of the impact would have passed back and forth through the ship and either caused more hull failures or would have potentially misaligned the watertight doors and allowed the incoming water to consume the ship faster. not that either of those possibilities were being actively considered in the short time between seeing it and hitting it, their only idea they were probably putting any thought into was dodge lol. speaking of the watertight doors, that's actually one of the big misconceptions of the movie. the workers had other ways of getting out through ladders and gantries that ascended the decks around the smokestacks and such, which is why they weren'treally concerned about giving the workers time to exit. which is just to say their deaths were for the same reason as the 3rd class people, they just weren't rich or affluent enough to have any room reserved for them on the first (and of course, only) round of lifeboat launches. the second was about the lifeboat loading, actually. the idea was apparently less about these ships being "unsinkable" and more about them being large enough that sinking would take a long-ass time. and the lifeboats were thought of more as ferries between the sinking ship and the presumed rescue. hence the underloading. it really seemed like they were banking on someone else showing up to save them. and there was precedent of that happening in recent memory for them, of an ocean liner that also sank, but did so slow enough to successfully transfer everyone onboard to other ships on the meantime. i can't remember the name of that ship offhand tho. the third was about the decision to restart the engines after the collision. the titanic actually almost pulled another ship into a collision in new york just from the hydrodynamics around the ship as it was moving. like yanked the whole ship out of its moorings and sucked it in like a black hole lmao. if there was any thought put into the decision to restart the props after they passed the iceberg, it was probably based on the fear of that happening again lol. just wanted to put as much distance between themselves and the iceberg as possible so it didn't come floating back and crush the ass-end too, if i had to parrot a guess from someone else more knowledgeable than me on the topic. great episode! first heard about y'all from the trillbillies, been listening on and off since then. given how talented they are in their ways, it's no surprise they took such a liking to your show, there's actually quite a bit of overlap under the hood in my opinion.

I was just thinking about dracularity yesterday and I was like... Haven't heard about that in a while.. And here we are!
