I was “there” the day Wellstone died. Driving back from Orr, MN to Minneapolis. Trying and succeeding to beat the storm and heard the news on the radio. I was somewhat parallel to the location at a similar time. So the storm was incoming for sure. Maybe the front edge was the most dangerous; and unpredictable winds were definitely in effect. But the storm hadn’t set in yet. Not necessarily a strange circumstance in Minnesota. There was a ton of buzz surrounding Wellstone and Republicans really took the reigns in the aftermath of Gov Ventura and Wellstone’s death. At the same time in MN the Democrats in MN are the DFL(farm & labor) and not the DNC. So the national party (DNC) may have experienced a circling of the wagons. Wellstone was compared to the old school definition of “progressive” Dems in the La Follett tradition. A regional dynamic that I’m not sure survived Wellstone’s death.
