This one hurts to watch. At the beginning of season 2, Ketil stood in stark contrast to other slave owners in that he seemingly recognizes the humanity of slaves as people who are no less valuable than free men. He appears to treat his slaves with some level of decency and fairness, even providing many of them a path to freedom by way of selling their harvest in order to pay off the price he purchased them for. However, as the season progresses we also see that Ketil is a weak man who is easily influenced and pressured by those around him, and that he may not respect the agency of his slaves as much as we initially thought. This is doubly true for Arnheid. In the episode where his employees pressure him into flogging a child as a punishment for theft, he takes his frustration with his lack of control over the situation out on Arnheid. It seems that every time he loses control over a situation, Arnheid is the one he turns to. He sees her as someone he can exert control over when he is unable to control other aspects of his life.

yea the season really makes you believe despite not being a necessarily good person(being a slave master that is), that he actually has some humanity to his character but then you get to this episode and all that is completely thrown out the window. it’s sad and disgusting at the same time. Fuck Ketil.

Really hope Apothecary Diaries ends up taking this show's spot once they finish season two. After the brilliantly-written, yet heartbreaking writing of this show, AD is comparatively more chill and funny . . . mostly.

Realistically yes however I still can't help but like Askeladd as a character more because he's so badass.

So studio Mappa uploaded a video on their YouTube channel of a scene where Ketil is giving a grand speech to his men to get ready for battle against Canute. It takes place directly after this episode. It's called Episode 18.5 "Same Old Story". It unfortunately doesn't have a Dub.

I think Askeladd is a far worse person than Ketil

This! Thank you! I was searching for the right words, but this is succinct and sharp and perfectly put.

I feel like this episode really drives home the point that, although ketil was more fair to his servants than most masters at the time, there is no such thing as a "good" slave owner.

This episode is a really firm but unfortunate reminder of the cruelty of the world, Thorfinn trying to reform THIS just feels impossible at moments like these. With Ketil just having fully lost all his humanity and Canute on the way prepared to take the farm one way or another its such a solid pressure cooker episode.

Someone else wrote a really good analysis of Ketil and I don't think I can do it justice. This episode especially really strips Ketil's character naked and lets us see the rotting entrails. When things go wrong, he turns ugly. The conversation about him being way too pathetic for all of this and being pushed over the edge was really interesting and I do agree. I want to go back and watch more of his scenes up to this point. This is the real Ketil, what what this messed up authoritarian position leads to. Especially to this awful borderline personality that's barely hinged. This show takes the nice slave owner shtick and absolutely destroys it. Shows us in one character everything bad about the world and what it perpetuates and what we should fight against and run from and hold in absolute disgust. I hate watching Arnheid getting hurt, I can't watch it completely. It's hard to fully put myself in her place and face the depravity of what slavery is especially for women, who we really don't see a lot of in this show. There are probably more intelligent takes on Ketil, but basically fuck that guy, right? Very intense episode, thank you guys for the reaction and always giving this show a lot of thought and genuine interest.

Cause their reunion was RUINED due to of the events of this episode. 😭

I don’t think they noticed Leif standing next to Thorfinn at the end there

I see Ketil as benevolent by convince, it wasnt hard for him to be nice and kind, and I don’t think he ever got challenged to strengthen that kindness, and when he did the challenge was way too much for him. It’s hard for me to explain but I think the catalyst for Ketils fall was his inaction with the woman he was courting at a young age, when he is beating Arnheid, we see flashbacks to that woman and the conversation when his father told him not to act and let her be married off, that would clearly fuck anyone up but I think if he fought that would’ve changed his whole story. Maybe it ends early with the warlord killing Ketil but maybe if he had won, he would’ve had something he loved, wanted to protect AND the horrors of war. War seems to be the catalyst for some men to grow. However, and to Ketils credit, ordered by his father to not act, so he stayed in that blissful non action and broke when war came knocking:
