Tier 3+ - Accidental Champion - Chapter 57 - Like Grim Reaper?

Xavier hadn’t moved from where he sat on the floor in the Staging Room.

There was so much to do. So much to learn.

He opened up his spell list, and selected the Spell Upgrade for Spirit Break, noticing that it was different to an Upgrade Quest.

Spirit Break (All) has been successfully upgraded!

Spirit Break (All) can now be used with a harvested soul.

What?

Xavier leant forward, staring at the text. Not that leaning forward actually made it bigger. He wasn’t sitting in front of a computer monitor or reading a book. The text simply moved with him.

Still, he felt like he was on the edge of his seat. He brought up the spell information for Spirit Break.

Spirit Break (All) – Rank 3

Spirit Break (All) combines all three paths of Spirit Break. It can break an enemy’s body, mind and magic.

This power comes at a cost, however. Spirit Break (All) costs twice as much as the average Rank 3 spell to cast.

Spirit Break (All) can be infused with harvested souls on casting to increase its effectiveness.

One cannot walk backward on the path.

Huh. That didn’t really tell me much of anything new.

Xavier smiled, however. Increasing the effectiveness of one of his spells only sounded like a good thing.

He willed the Spell Upgrade for Spiritual Trifecta to appear.

Spiritual Trifecta (All) has been successfully upgraded!

Spiritual Trifecta (All) can now be used with a harvested soul.

After upgrading the spell, he looked at its updated information.

Spiritual Trifecta – Rank 5

Spiritual Trifecta combines all three paths of Spiritual Guidance. When cast, it improves one’s physical and mental strength, physical and mental defence, and magical strength.

This power comes at a cost, however. Spiritual Trifecta costs twice as much as the average Rank 5 spell to cast.

Spiritual Trifecta can be infused with harvested souls on casting to increase its effectiveness.

One cannot walk backward on the path.

This is exactly the same as the first spell. He’d been hoping for some sort of new information, but there wasn’t any. I’m just going to have to test all of these things out in combat on the next floor.

There was still one more thing he needed to do before he opened his loot box—he needed to see what the Skill Transfer for Staff Mastery was.

He willed the skill list to appear, the selected the Skill Transfer that was available.

Staff Mastery (Rank 2) has been successfully transferred into Scythe-Staff Mastery (Rank 1)!

Xavier nodded to himself. That’s about what he’d been expecting. He summoned his Spirit Staff of Might. It felt… different in his hands. Like he’d lost a certain familiarity with it. He grumbled a little about the fact that he’d lost a rank in the skill when it had transferred, but he was glad he’d only gained a single rank in it.

Perhaps it’s a good thing I didn’t train with it longer. I only would have lost more ranks.

He brought up the skill, wondering what advantages it would give him when wielding a scythe-staff. For a moment, he also wondered why they didn’t just call it a scythe. Then he supposed there must have been scythes that were purely physical weapons, meant for Warriors, and shrugged the thought away.

Scythe-Staff Mastery - Rank 1

You are a student of the scythe-staff. The scythe-staff is a rare weapon specific to the line of Reaper classes. It is a versatile weapon, one that can be used by melee and ranged fighters alike.

+5% physical damage with scythe-staff weapons.

+5% magical damage with scythe-staff weapons.

+5% Speed when wielding scythe-staff weapons.

+5% Intelligence when wielding scythe-staff weapons.

This skill offers two attribute boosts?

Xavier shook his head and smiled. So far, he’d found that whenever one of his skills had ranked-up, he’d received an extra percent to whatever boosts that skills had. So, with Staff Mastery at Rank 2, and Scythe-Staff Mastery at Rank 1, he’d only lost 1% on physical damage and, and 1% to his Speed attribute.

However, he’d gained5% on magical damage and Intelligence.

That’s definitely a win. Is it more powerful because scythe-staffs are rare?

Though, currently, as he didn’t have a scythe-staff, those boosts weren’t active.

What most got his attention from the description was the fact that a scythe-staff was a weapon specific to the Reaper line of classes. The Stave of the Otherworldly Reaper must actually be a scythe-staff. I can see why they might not have called it that, though. Doesn’t really have the same ring to it as stave or scythe…

Xavier stood up and stretched. He felt like he’d been sitting in that position for hours, though he knew it had probably only taken him a couple of minutes to read through all of that text and consider it all.

The others looked over at him expectantly as he stood. They were all still sitting on their loot boxes, where they’d been chatting quietly.

“So?” Siobhan said. “What class did you get?”

Justin leant forward, curiosity clear on his face. Even normally blank-faced Howard raced an eyebrow, peering over at him.

Xavier let out a breath. Suppose I’ve delayed telling them for long enough. He cleared his throat. “I was able to choose an epic class.” He paused. “The class is called Soul Reaper.”

Howard grunted, shook his head, sighed. “Soul Reaper? Like grim reaper?”

“That sounds… ominous.” Justin said.

“That sounds awesome!” Siobhan said.

The other two snapped their gazes toward her.

Siobhan hesitated. “I mean, I suppose, if this were a video game, it would be awesome. But I guess because it’s real life, it’s a bit scary?” Her voice went high at the end, like she was asking a question.

Xavier chuckled. “I thought you’d react differently.”

Siobhan shrugged. “The world is changing. I have to change with it. Might as well embrace the craziness. That’s what I’ve been trying to do since the start, at least.” She didn’t mention her reaction to Xavier’s torturing of the hell beast, and he wasn’t about to mention it either.

“What exactly does being a Soul Reaper do?” Howard asked.

Xavier explained to them what he knew of the class. That he could harvest souls and use them in his spells, and about the different spells he’d learnt. He also told them about the fact that he would need to purchase a new weapon, considering his old one was fairly useless now.

“And you should get some armour,” Howard said. “You might be able to resist a lot of damage, but those robes of yours clearly can’t. You were practically naked after training your resistances on our second time through the third floor.”

Siobhan blushed at this, turning away slightly.

Xavier held back a smirk, wondering what he looked like now, beneath all the robes. He clapped his hands together. “All right. Let me see what loot I’ve gotten. Don’t spoil the surprise.”

He knelt before his loot box and undid the latch, the familiar notification appearing.

You have gained +1 Skill Point.

You have gained 100000 Mastery Points.

You have gained 30000 Lesser Spirit Coins.

You have received 1 attribute token (Spirit: 10)!

Xavier raised an eyebrow. His first thought was, That’s it?

He felt a little disappointed to find that one, he only got a singleskill point from the loot box, and two, he didn’t even get to choose what item he received—that item was chosen for him. And a hundred thousand Mastery Points didn’t seem like a great deal after what he’d been able to do on the third floor.

Still, he supposed he shouldn’t complain, considering all he’d achieved already. I’m definitely getting greedy.

The first thing he did was consume the attribute token. He hadn’t been surprised that it was for Spirit. He supposed he couldn’t complain about an extra 10 points, though it was nothing compared with all the titles he received.

He placed the wooden token into his mouth—it tasted rough on his tongue—and swallowed it with a gulp.

That went down surprisingly easily.

As he’d only received a single skill point, it wasn’t a difficult choice what to use it for. He’d been contemplating getting Meditation for a while, and when he realised it might help boost his Spirit attribute—which would be even more valuable to him now, considering the new spells he’d gained—he thought it was a wise plan.

And there was no way he was going to spend 100 hours in meditation to gain it. I could clear so many floors in that time. It would be a clear waste of his most precious resource, the one he couldn’t—as far as he knew—buy: time.

You have learned the skill Meditation!

Meditation - Rank 1

You are a student of the body, mind and soul. Meditation lets your body rest, your mind clear, and your soul grow.

+25% Health Regeneration while meditating.

+25% Spirit Energy recovery while meditating.

+5% Spirit.

+1% Intelligence.

Meditating makes you smarter? Well, not much smarter, but still…

Looking at the Health Regeneration and Spirit Energy recovery bonuses, he could see how this might be a helpful spell for a lot of Denizens. For him, those aspects of the skill were unlikely to come into play. At least, not for a very long time.

I guess I’m going to have to practice meditating now, aren’t I? Though he couldn’t, for the life of him, figure out when a good time for that would be.

Xavier glanced over at the System Shop’s terminal, then looked expectantly at the others. Siobhan was the first to notice and chuckled. She took his hand, offering her Lesser Spirit Coins.

The other two came over soon after. They’d gained 9,000 Lesser Spirit Coins from the third floor, and 120,000 from the loot boxes, which meant he now had 214,790 Lesser Spirit Coins sitting in his Storage Ring.

I now have two whole Grand Spirit Coins worth…

That thought dampened his mood, but he didn’t let it dampen it for long.

Because it was time to look at the System Shop.

He restrained himself from rubbing his hands together, keen to see what type of scythe-staff he’d be able to afford, and more than a little curious about finally upgrading his flimsy Robes of Intelligence to something more suitable for his new Soul Reaper class.

Xavier walked over to the System Shop’s terminal.
