Enjoy! Next ep Monday!

Only in fantasy the word wyvern is fron wyrm ehich means dragon in old english

demonic-myst

not the best example. zebra and horses are the same family even the same equidae. considering the huge difference of dragons and wyverns i would argue they not that closely related i mean they dont even have the same numbers of limbs xD more like apes to monkeys

Florian Hoyer

the dragon they fought in season 1 was a YOUNG blue dragon (Challange level 9) and the team was all around level 9ish. these are three ANCIENT dragons CL 20+ (a red ancient dragon has one of the highest CL in game with level 24! Vox Machina in this arc was between level 11-16 so this is just a crazy engagement where they rly couldnt do anything but flee there is a famous scene from this episode where Grog attacks and his attack throll combined is 19 and matt goes "miss" and they are like WTF 19 missed WAAAAA lets run xD

Florian Hoyer

Btw if you want to see the musical version of this episode, it's on youtube. This track contains no spoilers for the show. Helpless - by Cantata Pansophical Link (paste after youtube URL) watch?v=KWzAI30XWGU

David Bodor

Lore Bards, man, they're like wizards when it comes to spell variety

SWTobito

Wyvern are consider a dragonoid but not a dragon, similar to a zebra and a horse being similar but two distinct animals

SonofHope

The fun fact to gate keeping dnd, Matt Mercer actually uses a heavily modified pathfinder game for their show, so call it whatever you want it's all in the spirit of it anyways

SonofHope

"For the people like that, don't." LMAO yes. As a fellow dnd nerd, Ive had a couple of those moments, but in the end its just a game/show and its not that big of a deal. Keep up the fun stuff yall, and thanks for sharing it with us.

Ky McKenna

The moment of Grog trying to attack the dragon and his axe breaking is one of my favorite accidental gags in the campaign. Travis declares his attack, gets a 19, and he's literally about to roll his damage dice when Matt says a 19 misses. And the look on Travis's face when he realizes what that means is *priceless.*

Ferret

Sorry for the correction Kenny, but Vax as the rogue did not do the healing spell. All he did was grab the components for said spell and Scanlan cast it. The amount of times Scanlan would save the group or prevent the death of one of its members is insane. Dude was the definition of a clutch player. WIthout spoilers: there's even a moment in the campaign were he could've done something for another player that would essentially prevent a future disaster, but was forced to use the one time spell/item to help in the critical moment. Sam Riegel proceeded to break down into tears because he didn't want the future thing to happen to one of his friends OC. Its honestly so hard to watch but shows how much he cares in and out of game.

dannydarko27

Oh man I LOVED that movie growing up haha totally forgot about it!

AuroraZero_

That's been a thing the whole show, I believe

HBelmont 24

If that's the case, then is it fire specifically, or having elemental breath of any kind?

HBelmont 24

Wyvern dragon debate has nothing to do with arms. Traditionally if it breathes fire it’s a dragon If it doesn’t it’s a Wyvern

LordUnreal

Big heads up for this season and season 3! Always check out the songs that play during the credits. This episode just had the regular end song, but some episodes have special songs made just for that episode's credits!

Bryce Ammons

Spoilers for Campaign One of Critical Role: The episode name where this happens is called Omens. It's a great watch but at 4 to 5 hours an episode with over a hundred I'll narrow it down even further to say it's a little past half way through that episode. Such a good watch, I still go back to it from time to time. Matt will often have an idea of what the Players will do but he always often says that he is sometimes pretty scared for them. He is totally his Player's biggest fans. He'll be very level headed while it's happening but he's a big softie that will often tear up when one of the dies after the show comes to a close.

J Valentine

Hey just a side note because of your comment about if Dragons actually existed we'd be screwed there is a movie called Reign of Fire with Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey about what if Dragons actually existed. I think it's actually worth the watch I found it quite enjoyable if you've never seen it

Ethan Kayne

This. Even if he wasnt going to be the king, i feel like he would have gotten a position on the council and been damn good at it.

Suplee215

15:41 Love that instinct Kenny lmao

Zain Cassis

Kima is a halfling paladin 😄

Brandon Comer

Rip to Lance Reddick

mastertater

It sucks because the only reason Uriel died is because he stopped to help a guard. If he kept running he'd be safe, but that's not the type of ruler he was. He was for the people and in the end it cost him, but he died smiling; knowing his family was safe. Rip a real one

dannydarko27

Also vox machina was just on the list of who to take out because of brymscythe. Less for vengeance and more becuase they are a possible threat.

Suplee215

Dragons in media that I've seen that are impressive: I've always loved Peter Jackson's depiction of Smaug in the Hobbit Trilogy. He captured both the beauty and physical power of dragons in one of the few bright spots to a mediocre trilogy. The dragons in the Dragon Prince are visually stunning and also quite well done. But I do think the TLOVM has hands down the best depiction of dragons. Their power, intelligence, varied personalities, it's all on display. And hats off to Lance Reddick who fully embodies Thordak, the Cinder King. It's such an awesome intro to Season 2 and for me, this season is one of the best sequel seasons I've seen in a long time. There's hardly any filler to this season -- all of the episodes are impactful and I can't wait to see the reactions. Lastly, I need to find these gardens that share my name. :)

💀💀💀like it’s just ridiculous

Letts React

Dude as long as it’s phrased like “hey Kenny btw that’s bixbys hand not mage hand :)” rather than “Kenny saying it was mage hand is absolutely wrong, I cringe every time he gets things wrong 🙄” which I kid you not people have done. The thing is, I legit WANT to learn more about dnd, so the corrections ARE helpful!! I love getting to know more about the game, just wish a small percentage of people could be nicer and not so holier than thou about it. Main point is, if you’re nice, corrections are more than welcome!!

Letts React

See this is what I thought, they probz made it different to make the story more compelling, but it was probz a healing word at the table. Makes sense to me!

Letts React

See this I can appreciate. It’s kinda like how as a singer I’ll see new people sing and when they make critical mistakes I can’t help but feel a little cringe, but then remember they’re beginners and that’s part of the journey! That being said, never in a MILLION years would I comment “that voice crack made me cringe so hard”. It’s just kinda mean haha idk why people do it

Letts React

First of all you’re right and second of all I am SO stealing the tree fast travel for my game I’m making haha

Letts React

In the table game Matt ended up letting them play pretty loose with the whole fast-travel through trees things (probably just because it ends up being more fun that way) by usually just scrying at or near the location they wanted to go and finding a tree that way. Which isn't really how it's supposed to work but also it's a big "shrug and move on" kind of moment. So I think Keeper Yemen giving an incredibly vague description was a nod to that.

David L

"The Bard seduces the Dragon" is also like a classic D&D meme at this point and Montana unironically guessing that might happen is absolutely peak

David L

Is Gilmore, as well?

HBelmont 24

Allura (the blonde lady) is a wizard fyi Kenny asked lol

IceMike93

When you think about it, dragons are not much different than kaiju, so you know who would be VERY useful right now? Kafka and the Defense Force

HBelmont 24

as a D&D veteran, I do cringe a bit when Kenny gets things wrong, but I try to remember how it was when I first discovered D&D, and I was the same way. So I love the passion behind it, even when it's completely wrong :)

cryptc

In the game it was just Pike revivifying and resurrecting everyone everyone a lot. But that cam be boring story telling so they did the near death and last minute healing here. Scanlan does take healing word as does keyleth and vex so a lot of battles become a cycle of one character healing yhe next and a hard learning how to heal by ad libbing what the druid in is in theme. This is part of why I think anything the show as a story first is cool because there are elements changed from the game that are not in the rules but this isnt a game. Its a tv show and they can change what they need

Suplee215

Matt is known for his off-the-cuff style of DM'ing, where it's all about planning a general plot of the starting of the campaign, and making as much of the world around his players, so that when they choose to diverge from whatever he thinks they might do, he always can pull from that vast pool of info to "Yes, and~" in every situation. He is even known to have come up with some things on the spot, which then after the game, he expands into the rest of his world. My favorite style of DMing, and the one I personally use as well~

Gwendolyn Vrisala

Whenever a commenter is upset about a detail I just know they said “ERMMM, ACTUALLY” before typing their comment 😂 loving your D&D insight Kenny. Keep it up!

Delinda Arts

Class wise allura the lady in blue is a wizard. Her dwarf companion Kima is a paladin. Gilmore is a sorcerer. I think those are the npcs with classes that appear in this episode.

Suplee215

I hope that I dont come off as being upset when I point things out. Criticism on i think trying to appoarch this as just a story can be very intereesting and i made a few comments about that aside i try to just point the facts out in a helpful way whether its about dnd or involving how the cr cast plays their game. Love these reactions. Also yay to Montana instinctively knowing the Bard joke.

Suplee215

The moment where Vax heals Keyleth is actually a moment that got changed from the campaign. In the campaign, Vex is the one who gets hit and nearly dies. She actually starts doing death saves. I thought the change from Vex to Keyleth was good though, as it serves the story in multiple ways. - It forces Vex to reconcile with the fact that her animosity toward Keyleth was stupid and petty because she genuinely does care about her. - Takes Keyleth out of the fight so she doesn’t just insta win the fight with daylight/sunbeam - Sets up Vex nicely with the “take off the mask” with Percy - Ramps up the stakes since Keyleth and Pike are the only ones who have healed in the show - Foreshadowed a character thing but won’t reveal because it’s a bit of a spoiler. It probably won’t be as explicit in the show, but it will be nice touch if you ever look back to this episode

Wolfarick

Forreal. Talk about a crazy season opening. 💥 Also, I fully support them checking out Castlevania.

HBelmont 24

This episode was so nuts. I was on the edge of my seat the entire episode when I first saw it. I don't think I've ever seen an episode like this as a Premiere to a season. It didn't slow down momentum a bit. I hope you guys consider Castlevania after this one.

Ethan Kayne

I love GIlmore so much, I wish he had more fight scenes in the show.

David Bodor

I think it's more that the show takes more leniency to bend the rules cause it's a show. I feel like they'd have to jump through a ton of hoops if they followed DnD rules exactly

HBelmont 24

K&M stated him having faith in his players, but it felt like to me that was ACTUALLY trying to kill them this episode. 😵‍💫

HBelmont 24

This event was insane to watch at the table. Image years of playing in this city, knowing ins and outs of it and having it feel like home for players and DM and then it all burns down around you. Also there’s a table moment I wish was in the shower when they’re fleeing with Gilmore it was more running around and working with a thieves guild to get out and there’s a moment when some people try to attack them and Gilmore using crown of stars to intimidate them. It’s a great moment of fun Gilmore being dead serious

BLUEMONKEY18

Thordak is an example of how you introduce a main villain. He went FULL Burning Godzilla this episode. 🔥 💥

HBelmont 24

Montana's prediction of Scanlan seducing the dragons killed me. 🤣🤣 If anyone would actually attempt that, it would be Scanlan. 🐲 ❤️

HBelmont 24

What a way to start the season, just casually destroy the whole city the story started from 🤯

wanira 11

Someone shared a playlist of table to screens a while back, I hope they check that out. When the show was first airing I also watched those kinds of clips on youtube all the time, they are so much fun

David Bodor

34:30 - To be fair, bards have access to healing spells normally, so Scanlan could have just healing worded Keyleth there, but Scanlan did not get that ability in the show for simplicity purposes so he just did a rhyme onto the dirt thing Vax did. Worth noting that Keyleth was not dead there either, they said she was alive, but barely, which you could interpret as her having made her death saving throws, but not being up yet. Other than maybe Cassandra, I dont think anyone died and came back at this point in the show, but in the OG campaign ofc people died all the time, revivify is a pretty low level spell considering what level they were by this point, but Matt actually does make it harder to come back. He has a home rule, there is a roll for all revival spells that gets increasingly harder the more you die. Each death increases the DC by 1, so the more you die the higher the chance that it is permanent. PS - I hope this correction is not part of the 1% mean ones, Kenny let me know if it is.

David Bodor

The two children were played by Sam Riegel’s children so them convincing Scanlan was a nice touch

Shane Gilroy

Wasn't it the reverse? I thought Montana had seen it and Kenny hadn't.

HBelmont 24

I think corrections are fine as long as you are nice and not mean about it

David Bodor

Thordak said try to fight or flee means no mercy. Them going to vox machina was considered fleeing

Lucky

With the talk about all the dragon remind me of earlier this year when Kenny said he wants Montana to react to the lord of the rings series. I hope you guys react to both the hobbit and the lord of the ring series. Hopefully we get to see at least 1 movie this year from you guys!

Franina

At the very least, he was able to record all his lines before he passed.

HBelmont 24

Rest in peace Lance Reddick, Thordak's voice actor who passed away the year this season came out. 🙏

HBelmont 24

Yeah, you should definitely do a Table reaction to see how they did things. There are some cool side by side videos made.

Yuma Nanami

Matt Mercer destroyed something he created and loved, and he did it with a smile.

David Bodor

Whoo! We are back!! 🐉 🔥

HBelmont 24

Finding out there are people actually mad at you getting a D&D rule wrong is hilarious considering just how many times Critical Role’s cast get rules wrong in their own games 🤣

VVenture

I would like to apologize for my corrections then. Sorry 👉👈 💜 But your reactions are still amazingly done, I hope you enjoy the show 🎉
