Enjoy! next ep Monday!

Would love to see what Kenny shows Montana DND wise because some stuff I'm confused of what is being talked about but interesting to know!

Babybear47

The thing to remember is that the Campaign itself was played well before the show was made. They were already in Campaign 2 with a whole different party. Mercer did most of the voices not belonging to Vox Machina minus a few key ones who were actually guest players. I won’t spoil which ones, though I know you are a few episodes ahead of what I can watch.

Eric Justice

Blood hunter is such a sick class. It allows you to use your blood to power magical abilities and weapon boosts. There are I think four paths to choose, my ranger multiclassed with Lycanthrope. My beastmaster ranger, with a wolf, can now become Wolf. My party has also faced a vampire, and we were. Really uncertain about how it would go. Turns out we forgot the druid had a Scroll of Force Cage and it WORKED. The vampire couldn't get out and the druid and cleric just cast daylight. To quote our DM: You just microwaved my vampire.

KT Bees

I'm a week late with this comment, but it's not above me as a DM to have an NPC throw in a lifeline (the way that the Captain of the Guards used his torch to show the wraiths weakness to light) to keep a group of players from being totally wiped out. I always think of that during the climatic battle with the wraiths in this episode.

Robert Bonfante

The spell that Delilah used was the highest level spell of the season from her and it was a Pathfinder spell. I forgot what the spell was called but it could summon greater undead.

Robert Bonfante

Heck, since Keyleth is Circle of the Moon she can do it on bonus actions. She is a menace.

David Bodor

Man I know ive commented this every epsiode lol but im so excited yall are loving and watching it!!

AuroraZero_

Not really a spoiler I think to say Delilah is a Necromancer, it was a given by them breaking into a cemetery and summoning the shadows. Lore wise it takes serious training and skill to summon and control multiple undead Shadows like she did since those kind of creatures are (as you saw) some of the more malevolent undead and tend to have a mind of their own.

Karlsmithwashere

When Keyleth finally summoned this episode, I thought back to the first time Luz learned a light spell in The Owl House, when Eda's curse was revealed.

H-Bomb 24

At 30:00 there seems like a whole conversation was left out

dannydarko27

You can stop a magic person from casting most spells by taking away their magical components(bag of dirt) and their conduit( staff, focus, emblem, musical instrument, spellbook etc). Although some things can be cast without material components they usually still need their conduit. Druids can however, wild shape as an action lol

dannydarko27

Matt voiced all the women except for the celebrity guest players, but all the npc were done by him. He's not one for doing generic high pitched voices in the vein of Monty Python. As an actor he just embodies the character, that's the best way I can put it

dannydarko27

Also having a bear as a companion, or any big animal, makes things way harder in general. Especially when stealth is involved lol Thats why I like the ability to summon them magically if needed like Find Familiar.

dannydarko27

Echo Knights are so goddam cool thematically

dannydarko27

Someone already probs mentioned to break down the cast: Matthew Mercer (DM) - notably in the show: Sylas Briarwood, Trinket, various bg characters, and some other important characters that will come up later. Liam O’Brien - Vax’ildan (Vax) Marisha Ray - Keyleth Ashley Johnson - Pike Travis Willingham - Grog Laura Bailey - Vex’ahlia (Vex) Sam Riegel - Scanlan Taliesin Jaffe - Percy Matt and Marisha are married, so are Travis and Laura, the running joke is that Liam and Sam are married, and Taliesin is the group’s Eldritch Being. How did they create Critical Role? Liam wanted to play DND again because he hadn’t played since school, Matt decided to gift him a session for his birthday. They were all acquaintances with e/o. Liam and Sam had been best friends for years already, so Liam invited Sam, then he decided to invite Travis who had never played, then Laura got mad at Liam bcs he didn’t invite her but had invited Travis, so Liam asked her as well. Matt had Marisha act as kind of his assistant during that first game, and he invited Taliesin because he’s an experienced player and wanted him to help babysit the group. They played one session, it was supposed to be just a one shot. Liam sent an email saying he had loved it and wanted to play again if possible, no one answered and he got super nervous, but then Travis sent an email a couple days later and asked when the next game was. And so one session turned into many. Then Marisha joined as a player, and so did Ashley Johnson. Originally, Taliesin hadn’t been able to make it to the first few sessions after that first game and once he rejoined he reworked his character into the Percy we know because he was no longer feeling his original character. Ashley wasn’t at the first game, and in the first session she joined Travis was absent, which is how their backstory as friends forms. Pike first appears in the campaign asking about Grog because he was missing and she was worried. Then, Felicia Day reached out to Ashley and then Matt, asking if they’d like to take their home game to twitch, which is why when we first meet the group they were already many session into the campaign. Then, they all became best friends, garnered a massive following, and were able to animate their first campaign. They have 3 finished campaigns, they will be starting a new one soon, and their 2nd campaign “The Mighty Nein” is currently under production and set to release, as recently said by Travis (aka Mr CritRole CEO), in early 2026.

Matt also created the Fighter subclass “Echo Knight”, my current class. It’s amazing honestly. I’m a Shadar-Kai Echo Knight, and I’m multi classing into Paladin. Sylas Briarwood is a vampire and so he qualifies as a monster, he doesn’t really have a class, if anything he’s a “vampire warrior” which is a monster and so he has his own stats and abilities. Delilah however is a Necromancer. Matt voices every single NPC in the campaign very distinctly, and he, as a voice actor, is fantastic at what he does, not really hard to suspend your disbelief, he’s just amazing. Also I love BG3! I’m two campaigns in rn, will start a 3rd one with my friends!

patricia jimjimcherie

not sure if this was mentioned or if you guys know, but Matt Mercer and Marisha Ray (keyleth's VA) are married irl

Ellie

Makes sense

H-Bomb 24

Matt Mercer mentioned in a interview hard it was dealing with the consequences of introducing guns and gun technology to his homebrew world. the impact is no small. and with some campaigns they do time jumps so you really see how the tech evolves and spreads in the fantasy setting

Ebronics

according to the wiki, Silas is a Vampire (which are just badass) and Deliahla is a necromancer

Ebronics

pike has a spotty wifi connection lol

Ebronics

OK so this is the first instance that this happens and the animators explained why right away on the after show. LEAVING TRINKET BEHIND is in all honesty because he was very hard to animate. They said something along the lines of, "people say they hate animating horses because its a complicated process, now try making that horse thick, furry, and covered in armor, now animate it for every battle". SO while I also LOVE Trinket and would love to see him fight more, I also feel for the animators soul LOL! But they do use Trinket when its important, for what would a Ranger be without their Beast friend? (I watched every after show that CR released after their episodes so I remember a bit of the BTS they talked about. For example, if you didn't know, the two children in the first episode that made the party want to defeat the dragon, were voiced by Sam's (Scanlan) son and Liam's (Vax) daughter)

Cameron Dougherty

If I remember correctly Pike leaves to go talk to the Everlight because the person playing her in the Campaign had to leave for a bit. So this was the cover story they came up with to explain her absence. I will not say more for fear of spoiling things.

Alseriph

I thought the same thing. 😅 I'm more excited about Keyleth's backstory, since, judging by their reactions, they seem to already have an idea on what that might be, and I wanna see them see it play out.

H-Bomb 24

SPOILERS Montana: "So if everyone wants to talk about their parents, that would be great." Can't wait to see her reaction to the twins' father.

Juan Solo

Kenny, you should stop getting so hung up on what classes the baddies are. Remember that monsters can have whatever abilities the DM decides, Silas doesn't need to be a specific class. He's just a vampire badass

Sheldon Chambers

Some fun tidbits, since you mentioned them: Matt does pretty much every voice other than the main party and the many appearances of named characters played by their special guest stars that were actually at the table (none have appeared in the show yet). And typically he wouldn't do a higher voice, but a lower voice. Softer, depending on the character. And yes that means he's even the people Scanlan hits on. Suspend disbelief yes, but these guys and gals are all top notch talents. Marisha Ray's picture for her X-Ray is from the original intro for Campaign 1 when they all dressed up as their characters. Blood Hunter (the other popular Matt Class/Subclass) was actually created because Vin Diesel, yes that Vin Diesel, was doing a celebrity D&D session and asked to be able to do all these wild things like powering up when he gets cut and bleeds. He's Vin Diesel and he was apparently high at the shooting so Matt just made it up on the fly so it could play like Vin's character in The Last Witch Hunter, which had just come out at the time. Ashley Johnson, voice of Pike, was actually a regular cast member on the TV show Blindspot and often couldn't be at the table in real life so Matt would sometimes play her or she would literally Zoom in remotely for big events. This went on for the entire first campaign, it wasn't until the second and third where she was able to be a full regular at the table and a more direct contributing member of the Critical Role company.

J Valentine

I will say, you keep asking what class is that guy. In DnD creatures don't exactly have a class. Classes are more for players, but can be used to describe some npcs and creatures. Some creatures can cast spells while also being super strong like Demons, Devils, Infernals, certain undead...etc.

TLKDesu

I've been thinking about your class question Kenny, and i don't think Silas would be classified as any particular class, but simply as a variation of Vampire, with his own abilities and strengths

Logan Clark

BTW she isn't Grey Griffin anymore, she divorced Jared Griffin back in 2017 so she's been back to Grey DeLisle for about 8 years

Jachariah

I’m pretty excited to see Fjords journey and I hope people talk about how different Fjord and Grog are since they are both voiced by Travis, i also can’t wait for everyone to be in loved with Jester

Raymond Hernandez

Hey Kenny in BG3 what classes have you played as?

Raymond Hernandez

I think the creatures in question are wraiths -- D&D's answer to Dementors. I do love the show's depiction of their energy drain abilities -- it is quite terrifying. I also love how the show depicted Pike's Commune spell (the spell she used to try to get in touch with The Everlight). Lastly, this was a good Keyleth episode (amongst others, Pike and Grog also had a good episode here).

Robert Bonfante

Silas could just be a fighter class. Vampires will have the classes they had in life. Silas' special abilities are basically vampire abilities (the enhanced charm person, the life drain (in the form of drinking blood), etc.).

Robert Bonfante

Pretty sure she was also pretty busy with shooting The Last of Us Part 2 as Ellie around the same time so things were super busy for her in the 2015-2019 era 😅

VVenture

Percy: "We're here." Montana: "How did you know that?" We saw Percy looking over what looked like blueprints before Vex pressed him about the Briarwoods.

H-Bomb 24

We all know this cast is made up of an actual group of friends, and I love how much of that bleeds through into this series. The scenes of Vax and Scanlan flipping each other off, Pike opening up to Grog about the Everlight, and Keyleth and Percy talking about their families all feel so natural and believable. This cast is easily one of the best I've seen.

H-Bomb 24

Season 1 is gonna kick my ass, I won't be able to handle Caleb and Nott and Molly. Also, gods I hope we get the syphilis bandits

David Bodor

So intense, but definitely necessary 😅

H-Bomb 24

Maybe should react to the opening they used for the twitch stream of the D&D sessions, the picture of Marisha is from that cosplay of Keyleth...

cryptc

Also the Mighty Nein their second campaign also got green lit for a show and I’m so excited bc that’s my favorite campaign can’t wait for it to come out, NEIN!!

Raymond Hernandez

Yeah, sometimes you forget he is a fighter. He can action surge those curb stomps

David Bodor

Percy just man handling the ghouls had me dead. Bro said I do not need my gun 😭

Alayna Petty

Reminded me of Taliesen's super alliteration filled story from Narrative Telephone back in the lock down times.

David Bodor

Delilah does. She is a wizard with necromancer subclass. Silas is just a vampire lord monster.

David Bodor

41:30 - Fun fact - In Campaign 3 Sam asked Matt to create a therapist subclass for him, and he plays a therapist cleric that supports the team both physically and emotionally, it is actually really sweet.

David Bodor

Not only that, but Grog's able to offer advice in a super innocent way that actually ends up working. "When people can't hear me, I just shout louder." "Have you tried maybe saying sorry?"

H-Bomb 24

Pike and Grog have one of the best relationships in the show, and I love how they portrayed that this episode. When Grog innocently tries talking to Pike amulet, most shows would've had Pike snap at Grog in frustration, only to apologize and tell him what's bothering her. Instead, she just . . . tells Grog what's bothering her right away. Love to see characters that are supposed to be close ACTUALLY act close. 🥰

H-Bomb 24

A good thing to remember in D&D, is that only the player characters have to be limited to Classes. Any enemy or NPC can be whatever the DM wants them to be, and they don't have to play by the 'rules'. I don't think the Briarwoods have player classes

Ben A.M.

The show takes a lot of liberties with the rules of dnd to better tell the essence of the story.

Suplee215

Baldurs gate player here 👋

wanira 11

Keyleth has some of the clutchest moments in the show.

H-Bomb 24

Pike leaving is because Ashley Johnson had a role for a show in new york for awhile so she only appeared on occasion.

Cube Pylum

Machina Monday! Woo! I like this ep a lot. Btw the feast was not in their honor, it was to discuss the security of the realm.

David Bodor

Fun fact time!! Pike was missing/doing her own thing for large periods in the campaign because Ashley Johnson had to leave LA to film Blindspot in New York, her leaving at this point is a bit of a nod to that since she had to film around this time

ItzWicho

Yeah, on the other hand Delilah is a wizard with a necromancer subclass. Sylas is just a very powerful monster with magic

Cube Pylum

Delilah Briarwood has to be some of Grey DeLisle's best voice work in years. I'd honestly put it above her work as Azula in Avatar.

H-Bomb 24

So he's a monster, as opposed to a player character?

H-Bomb 24

If Montana got heated about how hard Silas pulled the reins on the horses this episode, she is gonna HATE what happens next episode. 😬😬

H-Bomb 24

Sylas has no class he's just a vampire

Cube Pylum

All the 'p' words for Percy in the beginning were positively palatable. 🤣

H-Bomb 24

Man I loved keyleth this episode also made me realize just how useful a Druid is

Braden Jackson

Yayy been waiting for this

wanira 11

I love Machina Mondays 🎲 ⚔️ ✨️
