2025-04-12 11:58:26 +0000 UTCYeah, not a fan of Omni-Man getting brought up, either. Though, mainly because it takes away from the unfiltered wholesomeness that is this show. Invincible WISHES it was in Frieren's league.

2025-03-19 22:16:05 +0000 UTCSomething JUST hit me! Dwarves in this universe do not believe in any afterlife, that's what Eisen said in a flashback back when the party was talking about the how Heaven existing would be convenient, so Old Man Voll likely also does not believe in any afterlife, and yet he keeps his promise to his wife, centuries afterwars, that's why he says "Silly, isn't it? Keeping a promise to the dead" - he thought that she was forever gone.

2025-03-19 21:57:38 +0000 UTCi just want to note, constantly bringing up the omni-man thing as if it has anything to do with the length of life that he lives, over the absolute demonic and destructive culture that he came from, is kind of crazy, the whole point of his sentiment about his wife was to showcase the complete absurdity of the viltrumite's philosophies when it comes to life forms other than their own race, it barely had anything to do with it his longevity, and more so to do with the indoctrination of the viltrumite empire... had omni-man been a character in this series with the same lifespan, he most certainly would not have the same views considering that he was shaped by the views of the viltrum empire. I think both ways of telling a story of how beings view others who live significantly shorter lives are valid given the context behind both, the dwarves and elves in this series don't have entire political structures built upon defining their own worth in comparison to the lives and lifespans of other races. that's not to mention that the entire life that omni-man lived while he was on earth significantly changed his worldview about other beings in the first place. and if anyone takes this comment as "oh he's defending, omni-man's statement about debbie being a pet" go and attain some reading comprehension skills please 🤍 i write stories as well, and i think that that was a great way to subtly showcase the dissonance between the humans and viltrumites way of understanding the worth & value of life.

2025-03-15 17:08:09 +0000 UTCHer reaction to him not remembering is her not believing someone could forget something like that. Dwarfs to her are so similar that when they become old she truly doesn't understand that they are in fact OLD and that their minds and bodies are losing a step.

2025-03-07 07:05:15 +0000 UTCAfter rewatching this ep, I realized that it is likely that Kraft became a monk for the same reason old man Voll became the village guardian, in order to keep the memory of a loved one alive, aka the priest he saved the world with

2025-03-06 19:14:54 +0000 UTCSeeing Frieren so affectionate and open with Voll is so goshdarn wholesome. I think my favorite detail is during dinner montage at 6:40, where you can just see Frieren's only talking with him the entire time. ☺️

2025-03-06 00:01:34 +0000 UTCYou noted the pronunciation of Old Man Voll. Reminder that all the names in Frieren are German words. The direct English translation of Voll is Full, and that’s more or less how it’s pronounced in German.

2025-03-05 20:44:41 +0000 UTCI see Old man Vol as an example of what Himmel thinks could have happened to Frieren if he fully confessed his love to her and tried to be with her. Old man vol is technically shackled down for the rest of his life in this village and is shackled to his love for his human wife. This can be seen as a positive or a negative. If you truly love someone this may not be seen as being "shackled" down. Personally I think Himmel would think like myself in this kind of situation where I would not want the person I loved to be shackled down by me due to the love I would have had for them. I think Himmel saw this as an example of what might happen if he truly let Frieren know how much he loved her and wanted to be with her and did not want Frieren to be held down by that love after he passes away especially since Frieren is an Elf and would live multiple times the lifespan of an average dwarf. This is why we specifically see him look sad and lower his head after Old man vol explains what he is there doing and his explanation of his lover dying because she was human and had a shorter life. It helps symbolize the clock tower being between them in episode 14 when Himmel kneeled down to "propose" his love for her even though she didn't know or understand. The one single thing standing between Himmel loving Frieren was time itself. He preferred the suffering he would have of not telling Frieren he loves her instead of potentially allowing frieren to suffer more than she already has because she would have grown much much closer to Himmel than she already was and she didn't even realize until now just how close she already was to Himmel simply in those "10 years" she had with him. So its just wild to imagine what kind of love she would have had for Himmel if Himmel confessed to her and if she spent his whole life time loving him. I just think Himmel had the purest form of love for Frieren because he chose not to be "selfish" by pushing his love onto her and knowing that it would only be only a tiny amount of her lifetime that he would spend it with her. Its like human lovers spending their life together and one of the spouses die and the other spouse is basically just dragging along the rest of their life until they die because they don't see any meaning of life anymore but that would be multiplied by hundreds for Frieren.

2025-03-05 20:03:03 +0000 UTCOne thing I learned with my few years of taking care of my grandpa since my family split up around the last couple years of highschool (parents divorced) and I was the main one who stepped up to take care of my grandparents is that when you have a person with severe dementia/Alzheimer's the best thing to do is not argue against them about what they say. Frieren did a good job in this moment by not pushing back against Old Man Vol when he mentioned them going off to fight the demon king. It causes a lot more agitation and emotional distress when you tell them they are wrong or try to forcefully change their mindset. I had to learn a lot of things the hard way with my grandpa since he was the type to get angry and blow up but the funny thing is he was NEVER that type of person. He was a strong hard headed person but he never got angry or blew up the way he did when he was getting up into his 90s and the Alzheimer's really started kicking in bad. If you ever deal with people with dementia and Alzheimer's just try your best to not push back against their thinking or say they are wrong about what they think. Its best to go along with it and provide them comfort in their thinking and if you need to you can sort of gradually curve around the fact they are wrong by taking it slow and helping them figure things out in a way that isn't just flat out telling them they are wrong. Severe dementia and Alzheimer's really really sucks. I am glad my own grandpa didn't survive long enough to have the severe consequences of Alzheimer's such as completely forgetting your own family and loved ones and forgetting how to even eat or worst of all forgetting how to even breath and basically suffocating themselves because they don't know how to do anything or know anything. Its one of the most awful diseases of mankind. Its better to pass away before getting to the point of that type of stuff. My grandpa completely changed as a person due to the dementia/Alzheimer's that he had. Anyways sorry for the long comment I just really appreciate that Frieren shows how to properly interact in that kind of situation.

2025-03-05 19:57:31 +0000 UTCGood explanation. The dub could have potentially done a better job sort of showing that through the translation but its not easily understandable in the original subs either if I remember correctly. This is an episode you definitely have to rewatch 2-3 times in order to understand what its showing and saying. A lot of showing but not telling.

2025-03-05 19:52:10 +0000 UTCCannot wait!!!! My favorite anime right now and I have watched hundreds of anime. The manga is just as good as season 1 stuff so season 2 should be just as amazing.

2025-03-05 19:22:35 +0000 UTCCounterpoint: There's a big difference between knowing where the tree was and being able to find it again inside a forest that's been growing around it for 1000 years. Also the ability to remember something is very different from the ability to contextualize it (and also recall speed), which is kind of a core part of here journey here. While that doesn't mean she has perfect recall, it is clearly far better than humans typically have even comparatively. She clearly knows what going senile means, so while she has processed that human lifetimes are so short, it's still a little bit of a shock that a long lived friend is also growing old and dying.
David L
2025-03-05 18:13:10 +0000 UTCYeah, from his training with Stark it's clear he very much was able to fight still, so he is probably setting the bar way high for himself and I guess why wouldn't he? Frieren is an exceptionally strong mage, he probably thinks he cannot keep up with her anymore.
David Bodor
2025-03-05 17:44:38 +0000 UTCSomething of note: back when Frieren reconnected with Eisen towards the start of the series, he told her he was too old to swing an axe anymore. And here we have Old Man Voll, well over a century older than Eisen but still wielding his sword.
H-Bomb 24
2025-03-05 17:33:41 +0000 UTCNah, Frieren definitely forgets things. She definitely has a really good memory, but not a perfect one or an infinite one. I mean she looked at the statue and felt she knew the person and it took her a bit to remember oh hey, that is Kraft! Or when in ep4 she doesn't remember where Flamme's tree/house is, she clearly knows it's somewhere in the area, but can't tell what direction at all anymore. EDIT - I think the reason she's confused by Voll being senile is because she's so young. She likely never thought about it whatsoever, it's an old person issue, she's young, she doesn't have to worry about it for thousands of years probably.
David Bodor
2025-03-05 16:59:18 +0000 UTCMontana really came a long way, at the beginning she didn't know much about animation and now she's the first one to notice how much effort that animators put in drawing a background character's braid.

H-Bomb 24
2025-03-05 16:01:09 +0000 UTC12:50 - She thinks he's playing senile, she refuses to believe that he doesn't remember anymore, because she remembers Himmel still and doesn't want to or can't imagine what it would be like to not remember him perfectly anymore.

2025-03-05 15:36:30 +0000 UTCSo it's never directly stated in the anime. It I think elves in this universe have literally perfect memory. Like it's not possible for them to forget something. So the concept of senility is probably extremely foreign to her. Imagine how shocked she likely was to realize that he forgot something so important to him
