I think its less about honor and more about power for the demons too. They think its honor but the only form of honor they can envision is based around power. Basically no demon will make themselves look weak. Lying and backstabbing? Sure. But why make yourself appear weak? That concept is alien to them.

2025-01-29 15:52:36 +0000 UTCTwo thoughts came to mind: 1 - If Demons may eventually see an "evolution" or understanding that they too can overcome their nature; 2- if Demons were to be eradicated, with people shown to be peaceful so far, without a unifying threat of Demons, would that lead to humans acting on their destructive and/or evil aspects of their nature? Would the series even go the route of "humans can be just as evil if not more" type route. and now 3rd comes to mind if any interspecies/cross-breed scenarios will be a thing and how that can play a role.

This is where sometimes the intros can suck when they're potentially spoiler-y...and I COULD be totally wrong, but i think we MAY have gotten a glimpse of said threat with the individual sitting on a throne (who has ears similar to frieren, so potentially an evil elf??) But this is me totally spitballing here lmao

The snapshots of her time with the Party of Heroes is a single second. This is in reference to her statement to Eisen in episode 1 that their time together is less than 1/100th of her life. This is to show the contrast of time spent, relatively. :D

Kenny I’m sure you’ll appreciate the animation during Aura’s death. If you notice they animated strands of hair being cut when she presses her blade against it. Amazing attention to detail in that scene alone.

2025-01-17 22:52:17 +0000 UTCI would add that a major reason Flamme wanted Frieren to avoid leaving her mark on history was so demon's wouldn't know about her and thus continue to underestimate her, even once she was strong enough to fight the demon king. Even then, Himmel gets a lot of the credit as The Hero for being a deciding factor in the fight. It comes up in this episode how the demons think that she won't be a threat to Aura without The Hero there to protect her. It's a cool way to show how what Frieren is doing to trick demons is the same as how demons trick humanity with speech. Humans hear the words and, despite all evidence to the contrary, can't wrap their heads around the idea that something that thinks and speaks cannot be reasoned with. Likewise, demons see her mana and, despite all evidence to the contrary, can't wrap their heads around the idea that she might be stronger than she appears.

2025-01-17 17:29:20 +0000 UTCAnother point that many struggle with - magic isn't a /tool/ to Flamme and the demons, and only became so to Frieren and Fern because of their dire circumstances. Flamme sees their behavior as a necessary tragedy to overcome evil because, to her and to many? Magic is art. Expression. Study. Harmony. The nature of magic gets explored more later, but try to imagine it like hiding your skills as an artist or burying your most beloved hobby until you can make money selling it. It's sad. So when Frieren says she only "somewhat" loves magic, it's her saying that she finds her love who she's doing magic FOR and the praise/validation she received... A trait she saw in Fern's love for Heiter. Ep 2: "It didn't have to be magic." But seeing the joy in Heiter's face when Fern first conjured illusory butterflies set her life on a trajectory. Fantasy and media have trained us to see magic as STEM or 'just' a weapon - but the best magic is art and love and joy, closer to Bending or the Force. Faith and passion and even culture with the little folk spells. So yeah... Flamme sees herself poorly for it, and I think that makes her even more heroic.

2025-01-17 17:15:03 +0000 UTCSmall thing: Aura isn't called the Guillotine because of the scales directly - it's subtle in Graf Granat's story, but her 'solution' to the rebellion possible with great willpower is to simply BEHEAD her controlled captives. That's where her title emerged from. Since the control lingers even beyond death, their bound souls animate the corpse and eventually just the armor under her command. Brutal. Since demons fade entirely upon destruction, like other monsters, I /think/ Aura is just cooked, though. And the easiest way to think of demons/mana is "prison rules". Why hide your strength when you're stuck in a situation FULL of potential threats and abusers (way worse than actual prison, in fact). It's why Lugner "hates geniuses" - their lifespan gives them an inherent advantage to always become stronger over time. So these Doogie Howser exponential growth types are the only real danger to them if they survive long enough.

There is the time and practice based ones like mana amount, refinement and different spells learned But then there are also more complex ones that dont necessarily increase with age. Some of the ones I noticed so far are: - Casting Speed - Casting Strength - Multi Casting - Reaction Time - Complexity of Spells - Concealment - Mana Detection

My theory is that while mana is def a physical trait kinda like building muscle but also based on knowledge, frieren has been going around for 100s of years just collecting spells. Most likely ranging from city shattering to making a bed of flowers. Also that’s a reason fern is so good at hiding her mana is because she doesn’t know super fancy spells just basic attack and defense magic so she’s really able to clamp down on her mana. 2. I would normally agree that the demons confidence is annoying, but here I really don’t. It’s not like they know what the trick is a just ignore it. In their society, hiding mana makes absolutely no sense, it’s so dumb for them to do so it just isn’t a concept. So in their world anyone with weaker mana would be dominated and they just translate that to the human world. Hiding mana is basically like the demons are fighting on a 2D plain and suddenly you attack from the third. But just as humans adapted to overcome demon magic and regulate it to become ordinary, even frieren calls them cunning so I can’t imagine this ignorance to mana suppression would last forever
