Enjoy! Next ep Friday!

I took the girl offering the child as another rouse and not empathy. Or if not an attempt at deception then a business transaction rather than caring about other people. She saw they wanted to kill her. So she offers this kid in exchange for not being killed. Not because she wants to make them feel better. Just because she sees everyone is about to murder her so trying anything she can.

Suplee215

I love this shows take on Demons as an "evil race". In D&D and other fantasy genres evil races or species of intelligent creatures are a staple, but they usually lack nuance or intrigue. Either they are just inherently evil, or created by an evil deity- or they aren't actually inherently evil at all and it's just a cultural thing engrained in them as a people. Freiren however treating Demons more as a Species of creature/Monster that have merely adapted in an attempt to better hunt humans is super fascinating and nuanced imo. They are intelligent, but are almost like a race of sociopaths- incapable of understanding emotions and morals completely and only leveraging their intellect and logic to essentially kill and survive. Like we see Demons have a sort of society based on there even being a Demon-King, but I feel like it's simply another adaptation to compete against humanity's tendency to live together and form communities. Either way I like this approach to the concept of an 'evil' sentient race, and honestly hope future works of fiction leverage a similar approach or explanation when utilizing the 'evil race' trope.

Drake

I think its more that elves do form romantic relationships, but its just takes a really really really long time for them to do so. As Frieren said here, the surviving elves all scattered and only rarely interact. Thus no elves are spending enough time with each other long enough for relationships to occur. This would explain how they existed in the first place (their reproduction rate was slow, but enough to replace any elves who died from external factors) but is now a major problem for a species who is now in few number. Their slow reproductive rate means they cannot recover from any major population losses.

TheWerdna

I cannot wait for episode 21 around 13 mins 😮‍💨😮‍💨

Victor Velazco

Elves lack romantic attractions and reproductive urges but they can reproduce. My guess Elves just have children just because

Historia-Europa

the demon girl wasnt actually trying to do good. It was trying do what it thought would give it the best chance of not being killed. Yeah, it didnt understand what it did wrong, but it wasnt trying to help either family, it was trying to extend its own existence by mimicking kindness

cade-carter

Are animals evil for eating animals? Are some humans evil for eating animals when we don't have to? Will a demon who doesn't have to eat humans to live btw choose to live with humans and what will that look like. Some things this episode makes me think about.

Meganclare7

weeeeell apparently the wording of the original Japanese in the manga implied that this was a general rule, not literally "across the board". This ain't just a dub issue, even the official english manga translations make it sound like she's talking about ALL elves However, even then, we can still question how much she's projecting her own experience onto other elves. SPOILERS FOR EP 10+ 11 AHEAD ... ... Frieren is apparently pretty young for an elf if we take Kraft at his word, and not to mention she lost BASICALLY ALL THE ELVES IN THE WORLD 1000 years ago, so perhaps her frame of reference for what is true for "all elves" isn't really trustworthy

CH

It's weird to me how people are so defensive of this point of view. I think it's the disconnect from the Watsonian perspective to the Doylist one. I'll try to explain. Frieren is correct in the story and the author did not intentionally write any race allegories here. I mean, the demons literally burn away to ash like Zelda villains when they die, they're clearly just manifestations of evil. That part is clear. But there's a MASSIVE difference between killing a monster and spending an entire episode debating a race's humanity only to conclude that even their children are evil and should die. No one thinks the author specifically wrote the demons to be allegories for minorities with our protagonist on the side of racism, but it doesn't take a historian to notice some unfortunate parallels. (I guess it's a good thing that people aren't recognizing these common propaganda methods anymore but I digress.) In my opinion, it's a flaw that makes the themes of the episode and the show muddy, not a flaw on the author's world views. I think any theme can be interesting if done well. It's even done well earlier in the show! I'll use examples from the show itself: The first time we meet demons it's through Qual, an enemy combatant that shows no sign of remorse. He was a menace back in the day, but the episode shows how over time society has grown to the point that his threat is trivial. The moral of the episode is that the longevity and perspective provided by Frieren don't just make her aloof, but a manifestation of the knowledge and drive of an advancing civilization. Inspiring! Now, in this episode, we meet peace envoys and Frieren attacks them on sight. Everyone suggests that she's being unreasonable and puts her in jail. We see Frieren's experience with demons in a flashback, where the entire question is whether or not a demon child can be trusted. The answer is no, the child was likely manipulating the whole time. Back in present day, the demons show their true colors and attack. The moral of the story is that sometimes the hard lessons of the past are often the most important ones. Not bad on its own, but again: that hard lesson was "the people who look like us but different are actually evil and we must not spare even their children." One of these morals is beautiful and fits right in with the story's overarching themes. Another is...messy. Bear with me for a second: some say if you imagine the demons in this episode to look monstrous like Qual no one would complain, but that's not true because that wouldn't effect the storytelling at all, so the themes are the same. BUT if you imagine the demons all looked like one specific race, the complaints become incredibly obvious. See what I mean?

Tim Chaos

Insane to interpret 'Freiren kills a monster that takes the guise of humans to prey on our empathy' as 'this is about racism and it's on the side of being racist'. Demons in this show aren't an allegory for minorities, they're just a straightforward depiction of a cold and manipulative form of evil.

Hannah N

so elves are all Ace

Ebronics

Double feature double feature double featureeeeeee

Rudy Velazquez

6:30 I love that "Ohhh" from Fern when Stark tells her why he wanted her to drop the "Mister." 🤣

H-Bomb 24

Hey Mortis I looked into DnD lore and you are right demons are inherently evil by birth so the kid was most likely just doing it not to die the anime might be different but I don’t know sorry about that you were right

Braden Jackson

I just wanted to provide a little bit of context, but Japan has different ways of addressing someone based on the situation and your standing compared to them. So here in the beginning Fern was basically speaking to Stark with the equivalent of Mr Letts, instead of Kenny

Desynth

Sadly I would have to

Braden Jackson

For sure. Demons aren't really evil, at least not in the technical sense, because they don't operate on a system of morality like humans do. The demon girl wasn't operating on a concept of morality or understanding of community; she just knew they wanted to kill her for taking away their child, so she tried to give them a new child so they wouldn't want to kill her

David L

Yeah from what they say in this episode, the demon "kid" wasn't actually trying to do good. Demons cannot be altruistic. It just thought that replacing the child would be to its benefit.

Jhulepocan

I love this show but it’s really unfortunate that the moral of this episode is “Frieren was right about racism, the correct answer was to kill the child.”

Tim Chaos

In actual pre cheistian the word demon comes from daemon , spidits neutural entities personifications of ideas eos/cupid , thanatos, the keres and their siblings are all daemons in greek myth , demon also in media has been exsplored with such nuonce past the ignorant catholicism , hell even the fall of rhe devil is a stolen myth from sumerian and the debol was the good guy in the myth the snake gave mankind a apple ro geabt the abolity go choos good or evil aka free will the apple of knolledge of good and evil wasnt some sin its a historical shmbol of free will in pre cherisian mythology the original garden of eden myth is sumerian The gods created humans as slaves the god tasked with creating humans (enki) fell in love with a human woman Choosing yo save humanity from enslavment he sneaks into the garden in ghe form of a snake giving his secret liver an apple the apple of knolledge of good and evil in his act he freed humanity Later enkis enemy tried flood rhe earth (sound familair) enki gasked a human with making an ark defying the gods saving humanity that human was also later geabted imortality and shows up in the oldest ever recorded myth the tale of gilgamesh

demonic-myst

in boring generic catholicism yes

demonic-myst

Demons are basically just a race of psychopaths. They may look similar to us and speak our language but they are incapable of understanding remorse, compassion, empathy, etc. If they display it towards someone it is only a tactic to allow that person to be manipulated. Their environment they grow up in only reinforces it.

Karlsmithwashere

There's a German physicist & youtuber who reacted to the entire series and he absolutely lost it the moment he heard his name XD

David Bodor

Fair.

Curtis Murphy

....that's what demons are. Evil

Curtis Murphy

They might be hopeless but might not that is what intrigues me

Braden Jackson

Yea the demon was definitely doing it out of self importance but for the vast majority of people who have done bad things give a chance to do better it starts from wanting to live or not wanting you life worse than it is what is interesting IMO is that she got it wrong and died so its hard to say if so in some ways wanted to be better but not understanding humanity or if she didn’t change a all and just wanted to live

Braden Jackson

My 2nd favorite patreon Is "A Goodwin TV" I love his discussions and he's just great lol also on jared and jordan anime patreon they're pretty cool dudes

💥Katsuki BakuGOAT💥(Kacchan)

What other Patreons are you a part of? I tried Carlie and Ange for a bit, but the tier I was willing to pay wasn't that good.

H-Bomb 24

Dwmons are beey one note in frieren gheir closer to dnd demons not beey interestong personaly i not as keen on the demons in Freren source material they just evil by nature literaly a sociopath species

demonic-myst

The name of the "leading demon" here is Lord Lügner / Luegner btw. Which translates to "Lord Liar" :P

elle_pichouette

The demon girl was trying to ensure her safety. Not do good. She was worried she would be killed by the family if their anger remained so she took steps to remove that anger by replacing what she’d taken.

Mortis

She didn’t care about doing good. She cared about being safe. She was attempting to get rid of their anger to protect herself not to made things right

Mortis

Ahhhhh yes unfortunately so

💥Katsuki BakuGOAT💥(Kacchan)

Yeah I changed it back so I wouldn't have a spoilery name on other patreons lol

💥Katsuki BakuGOAT💥(Kacchan)

I more meant bringing up the subject of fandoms being cringe, especially MHA's

H-Bomb 24

O I just noticed you changed your name back

Braden Jackson

The ending to this episode is so epic despite literally just being a simple threat. I will say that I think it’s even better conveyed through the sub version just because the fewer words make it even more ominous, but I’m glad they still managed to keep most of the impact.

Chelly

It's a beautiful show:) and I like your different opinions. On all shows. But yeah I'm just messing with you lol. And it's not cringe don't worry

💥Katsuki BakuGOAT💥(Kacchan)

There is also the possibility that even when there are good demons human still kill then think it’s impossible so it’s really a cycle of death

Braden Jackson

I know you're just messing with me, but honestly? I think I enjoy Frieren more than MHA. It really comes down to conversation. I know, cringe, but there's a LOT to talk about with MHA in terms of characters and a lot of differing opinions. Frieren's writing is more airtight in comparison, and most of everyone agrees with each other on it.

H-Bomb 24

My thoughts on the demon girl is that she genuinely wanted to do good but didn’t understand what humans fully deem as good so when she tried and got it wrong she had to die and we saw that she was scared of her own death and that is when she tries demon tactics like treating and the mommy thing I do believe that there can be completely good demons out there but it would be difficult cause the demon would have to both understand humanity and put their life on the line which is difficult

Braden Jackson

Yeah, the ending is my favorite part, too

H-Bomb 24

Apologies, that wasn't my intended stance. The "sociopathic" behavior i was referring to was the logic behind her decision. 'I took child A from you, here's is child B as a replacement' Then, she says "it appears I've made another mistake...I'm taking this child hostage." NOT, "I'm going to eat this child." She was using logic, void of malice or emotions. Her best/only choice, for survival, is to take a hostage. I hope this clears up my intended point. Ty.

Sergio

in a world where stereotypical monsters (i.e. einsam) are considered ‘bad’ for doing what is presumably natural for them (killing & consuming humans), demons are the same. regardless of their capacity for humanity, they still kill & consume humans, and use that capacity as a tool to do so. tbh i think in a fantasy world like this, that’s enough to write them all off as needing to be defeated. but maybe i’m giving up too soon- i haven’t read the manga so there are many demons & monsters in this universe i haven’t been able to interpret

Zachary Mullins

I think some demons in particular go way further and reach the evil category (Aura for one), but the demon kid was not evil, heck she was in a situation where she did not understand that her actions would be seen as bad, she was genuinely just acting out of self preservation at the end, not knowing that her actions would hasten her demise.

David Bodor

So at the moment there's a small spoiler question in the HxH 1 questions kenny just letting you know cause they haven't deleted it

💥Katsuki BakuGOAT💥(Kacchan)

Fun fact - Pretty much in every scene where Himmel is remembered by characters or mentioned, the anime always makes a point to show the sky prominently, since his name means sky. Also Heaven. Even cooler though, Heiter's name has 3 separate meanings, jolly, tipsy, but also Heiter is used when the weather is Sunny out, and when he is remembered, the Sun is often shining or they show a sunbeam in the shot.

David Bodor

Personally I love mha (I guess my pfp and name says that) but this show is beautiful and it's my first watch :) I'm enjoying it a lot. And OH NO hbomb how DARE you like one over the other lol 🤭

💥Katsuki BakuGOAT💥(Kacchan)

I love the double-meaning of Himmel. Whenever she says she's going to see HImmel she's saying she's going to Heaven and vice versa whenever she says she's going to Heaven she's saying she's going to see Himmel. It's really neat.

David Bodor

The background chorus at the end of it is freaking fire tho. I love that part and it fits really well imho. "Right at the end, embarks a new story Out to learn people in this journey Story of our days will go on Forever, ever, ever, as we now walk"

David Bodor

Yes, though I think people should be a bit careful with this analogy. Sociopaths aren't inherently evil and the vast vast majority of them don't break any laws let alone kill people like demons do in this show. Not understanding empathy is not what makes a person bad, it's their actions.

David Bodor

She was acting out of self preservation, it wasn't really a manipulation so much as trying to 'pay people' to leave her alone.

David Bodor

I think the flashback is not as clear cut as some think it is, but yeah every demon we encounter is an absolute monster that deserves Frieren's cold bloodlust.

David Bodor

Yeah, she has no concept of human morality, rules or laws. I reckon if she understood that killing anyone would result in her death, she would not have killed anyone there. At least not yet.

David Bodor

Confirmed - Kenny would be tricked by a demon.

David Bodor

Demons use empathy and a weapon.

Strike177

When Frieren tells Stark they are going to heaven you see a flashback of Himmel immediately before she says "To Heaven". Her idea of Heaven is Himmel.

L.C.

Love the next few episodes

mastertater

Love how this show takes its time and makes you appreciate the present. Even if they’re just clearing a path for a kindly, old merchant.

Delinda Arts

The first real arc of Frieren certainly leaves an impression.

H-Bomb 24

I've always preferred the ED personality

KeanuofRivia

I don't think the demon girl honestly understood enough to even be trying to make things up to the parents. I think it honestly never went any further than "they want to kill me and I want to make them NOT want to kill me".

KeanuofRivia

next few eps go HARD.

William Roberts

Frieren being badass😫this episode is the just the beginning for these next few episodes🙏🏿🙏🏿

Gdawg88

I think part of it is people are used to even bad guys and "bad guy races" having nuance so when something is just plain bad it throws them through a loop and they think this must be bad writing

Curtis Murphy

Agreed, also it's fascinating and horrifying to have a monster that uses human empathy as a weapon. Not the most common thing in storytelling these days.

JoeCrazy

The demon girl wasn't trying to "do something good" imo, when she tried to give the Chiefs daughter to the people. Yes, it misunderstood but the misunderstanding wasn't that "trying to replace their daughter with another is wrong", the misunderstanding was "oh killing the Chief and using his daughter as a replacement is going to far and won't work as manipulation"

Curtis Murphy

😭😭😭

Chandman

You guys should watch akame ga kill its one of my favorite anime’s and I feel like you guys would really like it

brandon wilson

Have to also point out that the from my read on the show that the demon child wasn't giving the chief's daughter to the mourning family to "do something good". She remarks that they have wished her dead since she got there. To me it's just her logic only brain settling a score to get them off her back. I.e. they're angry at me because I took their daughter. If they have a daughter they won't be angry at me thus making my life easier.

Phantom Egg

I've seen people on Twitter and the like complain that demons should be treated as another intelligent species like humans and not just monsters that learned to speak to lure in pray. Frieren said it, the show showed us it in a flashback, and then the Demons themselves agreed with it. The show could not be more clear.

Phantom Egg

Demon arc let's goooo

Limini

We also saw technically saw the einsam and the dragon and the little girl from the flashback. But this kind of demon that prays so specifically on humans by imitating them and garnering sympathy is new. Qual was scary and "evil" and a threat from start to finish, there wasn't much thought of whether to kill him or not. This is the first time meeting demons that make you doubt and think "maybe there is a peaceful way" bc they look so similar to humans thatyou subconsciously put human morals and value systems on them. And there could be demons like that in the future who just don't clashwithh humans bc they have different goals etc. I personally would like to meet a few other demons before I can make myself a picture of how demons work

Limini

My pfp's Inosuke, who's from neither. 😅 A man can have different tastes.

H-Bomb 24

Also I love how demons are like neutral. When I think of the Einsam, the dragon, Qual and now these three demons as like the same kind of monster, I can't really call them evil. Like when a tiger kills a human it's not really evil bc it doesn't operate on the same concept of morality. Im sure /some/ demons can live peacefully among humans but it won't be bc they're more good than the others.

Limini

Frieren over mha? Looking at your username I wouldn't have expected that lol

Limini

peak incoming

Butthead faxe

I mean, we did see Qual in episode 3.

James Long

Time is such a hard concept to grasp when you don't experience it. Like I can maybe name a handful of people that lived a 1000 years ago on the spot if I try really hard. 80 years ago was world War II. And while it is well documented and well remembered, there is an emotional disconnect, compared to the people who actually remember it first hand. Similarly the merchant probably wasn't even born when Himmel and the party defeated the demon king. It's sooo easy to be lost in time and to forget, when frieren asked about the festival in a 100 years I was like "oh sure" but a thousand???? So many medieval holidays and celebrations have been lost in time or warped.

Limini

The Demon, from the Village, wasn’t “trying to do something good”…She was simply trying to “settle an imbalance” that existed. More so sociopathic than generous.

Sergio

Forreal. This show is too good. Not to mention it won't reach YouTube till February.

H-Bomb 24

That bit at the begin with Frieren waking up early and Fern praising her is too good.🤣 Despite being a millenia-old elf, Frieren can be BRUTALLY relatable. 😅

H-Bomb 24

I mean, even before that.

H-Bomb 24

such a chill pleasant anime

yani

Loving the reaction also he really does look like light

Braden Jackson

Sooner than with me. 😅 Somehow, it took my first rewatch to realize, "I think I love this series."

H-Bomb 24

The "hair behind the bangs" animation is something I first noticed with Disney's Star vs. The Forces of Evil.

H-Bomb 24

Thanks for the reminder that mha JUST ended lmao 😂😂😂

Limini

I love how unreliable the worldbuilding is. Like is what frieren says biased? Is what the people say just folklore or true? Bc we haven't seen any other Elves, warriors or mages or demons really, we just have a really small scope of what is true.

Limini

Sucks to have to wait a week for the next few episodes 😭 absolutely fantastic

Chandman

Light yagami lmao

Limini

No, I mean that in a positive way.

Limini

The way the music just CUT with that montage of the child demon. 😨

H-Bomb 24

Nah, I feel ya on the intro, Kenny. It's great, but doesn't fit what I thought the fantasy aspect would be. Don't worry, though. The second one is better, imo . . .

H-Bomb 24

This has become my new favorite reaction of the week. 😁

H-Bomb 24

The lack of music in the beginning was TRIPPY

H-Bomb 24

Paying 20 for this patreon tier to see Kenny mess up the intro multiple times unedited is where the true value of this channel lies

Limini

I only started watching this series half a week ago and it's become my favorite one that you're reacting to
