Enjoy! next ep next week!

CSM 1x5

Comments

Why is she always so uncomfortable with sexual stuff, it’s just an anime haha

Thabelo Mojaki

Can I just say their dog barked just as makima sat on denji and got close to his lips... Lives up to her wanting him to bark but unplanned lol

Babybear47

I am late to this post, and I dont know if you have been informed or not by the time of me saying this, but that 1.2 million people that the Gun Devil killed in 5 minutes... was worldwide, not just Japan It has a few pages in the manga after Makima says this, but it details how many people were killed, and from where. It was in Japan for only 26 seconds, and killed 57,912 while passing through. Also it was confirmed by the author via Twitter, that the prank they pulled was putting some of Meowy's poop on Aki's nose in his sleep

The thing that changed my mind on Denji's character entirely was earning how old he was...I gained a whole new perspective after that, he's just a little bean, he knows nothing and is figuring things out with no real guidance at best and manipulation at worst.

David Bodor

I don't know that it's completely fair to say that Denji's idea for relationships came from porn. He wanted a girlfriend as a general goal before becoming the Chainsaw. It wasn't a very well-formed idea but none of his ideas were.

Mekar

No one is saying that Chainsaw Man doesn't have fanservice but that it uses sexuality as a theme with purpose, most stories don't do that and just use sexuality as fanservice.

Luciano

I mean I get what yall are saying, but I think making large strides to differentiate between the two just allows for acceptance of one over the other. Like you can show sexuality without fan service, but even the intro has Power in a bikini with her arms pressed together….like that is cleary fan service. It just happens to run with the overall psycho vibe of the show instead of it being distracting like I would say it definitely is in MHA

LowHorizon

I gotta say Makima really is a master manipulator in the scene with Denji. She got Denji all horned up so when she says he can have any wish, the first thing that pops up in his head is of course going to be the boner in his pants from the for play Makima was pulling on him.

Colton Piper

I was hoping to know this episode but I'll just ask in one of the next ones; what do you guys think about Makima so far? Her personality, demeanor, actions, especially this episode with how she handled Denji's dilemma, very curious to know.

Ash Ketchum

I think for me the hotel arc was when CSM really picked up for me. While the sexual content isn’t really an issue for me, if you’re not a fan or don’t like the way something is handled that’s a valid reaction too! Would love to hear the criticism as well as the praise :)

Addy

The thing about chainsawman though is its not so much fan service as much as sexuality, more so its use to control is a big factor in the story.

Ragnarok

im fully caught up only one i know of is that woman with the eyepatch not himeno

Kai Kage

Super impressed with Montana immediately zeroing in on the glass child thing with Aki. That’s pretty much all the backstory we get on him. And that particular dynamic being highlighted before Gun kills them all is important to Aki’s adult psychology, as well as how he relates to Denji and Power. I think Montana is gonna be crying by the end of the season.

Graham

and which characters are you referring to?

defnotdai

Everyone definitely has their own line with stuff like this. I actually find it easier to deal with in animation somehow, like it’s more abstracted, as someone who was victimized by an adult woman as a young teen. I think the depiction in CSM is very intentional and precise. People using Denji in various ways is the core of the first half of CSM, his exploitation is a tragedy to watch but also serves to inform his growth as a person. He doesn’t like being used, he yearns for freedom and self determination. I think that’s what makes him stand out as a shonen protagonist. His powers don’t immediately unlock the dream life that he always wanted (even if they have to work really hard, like Midoriya, it’s his dream to do that work), with Denji, they just reframe the abuse he was already experiencing.

Graham

Reze moving going to go SO HARD! My wife loved the anime and is somehow resisting the call of the CSM manga box set on the bookshelf so she can go into the movie blind. Her little bro and I were REALLY talking up the next arc. I don’t know how she has the patience?

Graham

Lower salary, better benefits and vacation days, like most government jobs.

Graham

Having just come from reading the latest chapter of the manga; I gotta say, it’s pretty insane how far Denji in particular has come, while still retaining everything that makes him Denji. Like, he’ll shock you with an incredibly mature and insightful observation, but then indulge in petty childishness the next moment. I love the kid, he’s my son. I just want him to be happy. Too bad Fujimoto is a real sick fuck. 😭

Graham

It’s just sexual content, not fan service.

Graham

would this even necessarily be considered fan service though? Like I feel like as uncomfortable or graphic some scenes may be, it's not meaningless. It serves purpose beyond just trying to appeal to a young, immature, horny audience.

defnotdai

Also I think the going private comment was more like leaving the org to go into private work. So instead of being a public safety devil hunter, they would work in the private sector which we can assume is more for-profit and selective on the jobs they take. Public safety would be lower reward and likely higher risk.

Eileen Hinman

It's important to remember that despite how crude and disgusting Denji may seem early on he also learns very fast. He's already learnt that very base desires don't live up to his expectations and despite her extremelly weird teaching methods he understands that physical intimacy is more gratifying with someone you have a connection with. I understand that the show/manga can be quite graphic but I hope you both enjoy the rest of it because it all serves a purpose as opposed to other animes with gratuitous fan service.

Phantom Egg

This is one of the few shonen anime where the use of sex, eroticism, and intimacy actually serves a purpose to the characters and the story, and not just there for the viewer's titillation.

Taizen

Also wanted to mention it’s one of the only mainstream manga with canonic lgbtq characters

LowHorizon

Despite usually being bothered by excessive fan service, I am constantly recommending this show to people because it’s just off its fucking rocks. The first 7 episodes are just complete chaos and then it manages to mold that into a deeply compelling and unpredictable plot line.

LowHorizon

This is gold!

Ramon Fax!

Just incase anyone was wondering what the "prank" was that Denji and Power pulled, they put a piece of poop on Akis nose while he was sleeping

Maurice Segin

I'll say as a manga reader that everything comes back full circle. If/when season 2 comes out it will staple CSM into goat status.

Benjamin Miller

Glad you guys seem to be enjoying the series! I’m with ya that some of the scenes can be a little off putting, I think euphoria struggles with the same thing and that ended up being a really good series (so far) so I have hope for chainsaw man as well.

Christopher Collier

Ohhh okay thank you

Blakeking

Yep!

Letts React

Have yall watched the endings for each episode

Blakeking

Very very fair assessment. Honestly think there is one coming up yall may choose to skip over but I will also say it is one of the last majorly graphic scenes. That’s if yall haven’t already watched. But I really enjoy the content. You two are great

NasOKM

I get the feeling that’s gonna happen, just pretty off putting to have some of these scenes be so graphic, but we get that it’s actually Character development this time, unlike Mineta

Letts React

I know the “immaturity” of Denji may be a little extra. But I promise his character is way more complex and the growth and payoff is worth it. When you see where he ends up throughout the series
