But they are born from the worst of humanity, given life and sentience and forced into a world that actively hates them and hunts them down

Demons in demon slayer often end up being sympathetic because they were downtrodden people that were taken advantage of by musan at rock bottom (mostly at least), which makes for a beautiful story but it softens the impact of the fear that demons bring imo. Curses on the other hand are horrific because there is no sympathy they're monsters only born from the worst emotions and feelings.
