He was horribly disfigured in a hate crime and has scars all over his face. His face scared someone once and he doesn't like people being scared of him so that's why he wears a mask.

He just seems like a great guy, and whenever he does show up he's always shown to care deeply about his friends. His quirk is also just one of the weirdest and out there in the show.
