You said Thor came up with thor. Its just his name Lmao, his dad came up with it lol

Anthony Metcalf

Bakugo's totally real hero name "Man Who Won't Put His Petty Bitterness Aside In Competition To Be A Normal Human Being For Like Ten Fucking Seconds"

SpiritOfTheHero

I'm not an expert on the topic, but Deku in Japanese IS normally an insult, used to imply someone is 'useless' or 'can't do' something. However, there are alternative ways to interpret it that that instead mean 'useful' or 'can do'. Also as pointed out by Bakugo when he gave Deku the nickname, its also a Japanese pun based on how his name is spelled in Kanji.

The Lorax

The shock on her face when you said No tentacles aren't sticky always lmao, u guys are hilarious!

Peter Amet

Confused how Dummy is bad but Puppet is good? aren't both bad.

Peter Amet

never thought i'd come back from a camping trip to catch up with all the episodes i've missed and witness an indepth covo on what a tentacle is 🤣🤣

The interesting thing about hero names is that it's actually very common for a hero to be branded by the media before they can give their own name, but another equally common trope is to show that your young heroic protagonist has jumped the gun and not really though the hero thing through by having them be out on their first night fighting crime and someone's like "and who are you supposed to be?" And that's when they realize they haven't picked out a name yet.

Ferret

damn things getting heated in the cellophane fandom hahah. the "no, kenny!" was so serious it got me

Captain America was his rank in the military and his code name on missions during WW2 Tony had a news paper call him iron man and liked it. Thor was givin his name by his parents. Black Widow is what Natasha is so she just goes by that. Most superhero’s are given their name by others. And they are usually are bland and vague because the information the public has is limited.

Æther Paradox

Man, this is AFAIK the first instance of the thing I really find annoying in MHA: the ominous future statements that tell us something important or major is coming, like "I wish I had done X at that time". It really undercuts the surprise of the conflict for me. Minor thing but I hate it because it happens a lot in this show in particular witH Deku's voice over, but otherwise super fun show and really enjoying you folks reacting!

Yeah, gonna be honest, that is a staple of shonen media pretty much worldwide. Partly because younger audience so you don't want to have too much direct dark content like heroes dying on-screen, but also because the adventures and plot are more important for the message than realism.

The word "Deku" means puppet and therefore is also used to mean useless, in the same way that dummy means both puppet and stupid. The word deku is used in Japanese phrasing "What can he do?" which is why the perspective flip of Kacchan focusing on saying that ironically and Uraraka saying it optimistically just requires acknowledging its duality. Here is a picture of a deku puppet: https://biturl.top/3Qnyma

Hmm Kenny has a strong opinion on tentacles 🤔…..

Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen #1

Yeah MHA fights are like Pokémon battles, nobody dies, they just faint and wake up later.

I thought a tentacle was just a boneless arm.

DthDisguise

Was there another time they did and I'm forgetting? Because in the sub it's right after the fitness test when ochaco specifically says "I think it sounds like the word for you can do it" but in the dub she just says she thinks it's cute.

Jinchuriki87

Yeah I've been lucky to get my question selected a lot for this show. But no, in dub she simply says "I think it's cute"

Jinchuriki87

When did they explain that in the dub? It would have been hard to do that in dub....

L.C.

They did? I do not remember that. I could have sworn they skipped it. You are talking about the one where the name could be taken as "dekiru". Deku means you can't do it but Dekiru means you can do it. Ochaco seen it as the meaning of dekiru where it means "you can do it"

L.C.

I was wheezing when she said that

Brendan O'Connor

They explained the meaning in dub earlier on in the show, def went over it 👍🏻

Letts React

Your the one that gets in on a lot of the MHA questions right? Do they know the real meaning behind Deku's name? The one that the dub fails to show. About his.... I think it was his kanji? The one where it can be taken two different ways?

L.C.

Did they find out what the REAL meaning behind Deku's name was? Cause I don't think its done in the dub. Big fail on the dub cause its not just simply turning a hateful word into something to call your own. I could explain it but it might be best to have someone else do it cause I might mess it up.

L.C.

Yeah came off too aggressive with what I was saying and I am sure that made it come off as a bit rude and unnecessarily hateful. But I am glad it got resolved. Was just trying to make a couple of points and it made a whole fuss but it was my fault.

L.C.

Oh believe me, I've SEEN what you're talking about. It can be bothersome when people will act like one show is perfect. Glad we could come to a peaceful resolution 🤣🤣

Jinchuriki87

And I am not stating that you should have said something. You are fine. Its just the way the anime community tends to come across with things and the way a comment can be taken. Just like with my comment I didn't mean to come off as aggressive but after going back and reading it I saw that it can be taken that way. Not trying to go on and on about it so I hope you get what I am saying.

L.C.

Final comment cause I don't mean to start up a war lol. I apologize for the way I came across aggressively in the comment. I could have worded it better. All I am basically saying is its a problem in the entire anime community where they will criticize one series, and a lot of the time its a series that already gets a lot of hate so they ride that train of hate, but don't criticize others. Especially when the underwhelming deaths are a general problem in shonen jump magazine and people will single out certain shonen series opposed to others that have the same type of issue. People love to bring up one series but not the other series and bring up one side of something but not the other. Its something I tend to see in the anime community a lot. I saw your comment and I saw the criticism of underwhelming deaths. Not that you don't think about criticisms with other series but that its brought up that this show does this and it could have been noted that its an issue in shonen jump itself and their are other sides like AOT where I can criticize too many deaths. Not hating on you for it I just think its something the anime community needs to improve on. Anyways the aggressive tone and original wording in my comment messed up my overall thoughts. Thats what happens when I end up typing a comment as I am trying to do other stuff so my bad on that

L.C.

But I didn't bring it up, you did. Of course I take issues with parts of Naruto. It just happens to be among my favorites and so I went with it. Honestly the anime that's had the biggest impact because it's the one that got me INTO anime is bleach. I LOVE the show, even if I take issue with blatant plot holes that I've yet to make sense of.

Jinchuriki87

Only thing I was talking about with you specifically is bringing up naruto. Not saying that you don't think the same way. I don't assume that. I am just saying it happens with people and naruto can be one of those series

L.C.

Except, again, were talking about a specific show. I could easily go off on tangents about bullshit plot armor in damn near EVERY piece of media that exists. Fmab, AoT, ds etc. They ALL have issues. I've never seen a perfect show with nothing to complain about at some point. Seems odd to expect someone to bring up EVERY complaint they have on a message board attached to ONE show though.

Jinchuriki87

Im not singling out you btw. I am just talking in general even though the slight aggressive tone of my comment may have felt that way.

L.C.

May be coming off as a little aggressive and I don't mean to come off that way but what I said is true. Been an anime fan almost my entire life. Got serious about watching and enjoying anime years ago. This is how it goes with anime watchers. People have a right to criticize a series but bring up the other side if you criticize one side of something is all I would prefer.

L.C.

Ummm...ok. were commenting on their reaction to MHA, thus it's obvious that's when criticism OF MHA specifically are made. Why the hell do you assume I take NO issue with other shows in this regard?? You talk all that shit with NO idea if I could well agree with you on everything you just said. Seriously???

Jinchuriki87

People are quick to criticize a series like MHA, and to be fair I have quite a number of issues with its writing myself despite being a fan of the series overall, but will see something like AOT and ride the train of overrated series and not criticize it at all.

L.C.

You are talking about a SHONEN jump manga. I wouldn't be necessarily talking about deaths when your name is Jinchuriki. If that is a reference to Naruto I definitely wouldn't be speaking about underwhelming deaths. At least MHA has a decent enough explanation with quirks and how much more advanced their technology and resources is. This is the same world that can make certain types of gear for superheroes. I agree it is underwhelming in a way because horikoshi the author of MHA makes some gruesome amazing horror panels. You just go and read the manga and you can see that. People complain about underwhelming amounts of death while I see AOT and I complain about how many useless worthless deaths it has. Bring up the issue of series throwing deaths around like its nothing and making you not care for characters partially because of that if you are also going to bring up shows that have underwhelming deaths.

L.C.

You're not wrong, but with MHA it gets almost annoying at times lmao

Jinchuriki87

The way that Montana has been able to clock Bakugo’s personality so far is great lol “his name is going to be a Fall Out Boy song”

Winnie

To be fair, that's a common trope in superhero media everywhere.

Gestrid

Sorry, I'm commenting AS I'm watching y'all...final note. I TOTALLY agree Kenny, this show definitely has been, I guess underwhelming is what comes to mind, with the lack of death considering how many times it has felt like "no way ____ survived that" just to be like "nah, they're ok"

Jinchuriki87

Oh and looking up "tentacle" definition, it specifically refers to JUST "a slender or flexible appendage" no mention of suction. Sorry Montana 🤣

Jinchuriki87

Literally woke up just in time for the drop. Yes!!! (And thanks for answering my question!)
