AOT 4x3 Special 1

ENJOY! Next ep coming whenever its announced, and we can't wait to watch it then!

Comments

yeah let's not forget about annie ferris wheeling the scouts, that was her choice to do, it's not like someone forced her to do that, she could have just crushed them

First Grade Sorcerer - Day

All of your vinmeo links seem to Have gone

dooba dooba

Can't see it now. The link appears to be down.

Brandon Gaines

I think Eren said it pretty plainly. He cares about freedom more than life. For him, it’s better for his comrades to be free and die fighting him than it is for them to not be free because he took away their powers. It’s like what bertholdt said to Armin in season 3 “you‘ll always be my beloved comrades, right up until I‘ve killed you”

Nigel Douglas

I cant watch your other reactions with my Tier 2 sub. Is that normal? I mean some Demon Slayer reactions from late July are still locked for me 😭😭

Haorii

Are you gonna watch other ova ? I feel like Montana would absolutely adore the cookout one 😂

Showaddict

I fully believe that old guy would go back on what he said, once the danger has passed and they're removed from the situation and they're not feeling the same emotions.

TrixieTurner

did it get deleted

Nigel Douglas

I do find it an interesting twist of determinism that, in essence, the person/titan that fights the most for Freedom is really the least free. The whole idea behind memories of the future is that it essentially pulls back the curtain on free will; if the memories of this moment have been flowing back in time to the very beginning of the Attack Titan, free will is effectively an illusion because everything has been moving inexorably towards making this moment happen. Because the memories "already happened" there is nothing that can be done to avoid them, essentially making Eren (and by extension every holder of the Attack Titan) the least free of any of them since he doesn't even have the luxury of the illusion. I think, at least in part, that is one thing Eren is lamenting in the scene with the kid. He knew he was going to save the kid then, and he knew later he would trample the kid to death. He saved him because he was always going to save him, he couldn't walk away. But was it truly even a choice Eren made, or was it simply an inevitability? And if that's the case, is anything he ever does really a choice, if every "choice" has already happened? That certainly seems to be the case, so I think it breaks his heart in that moment, knowing not only that he is going to kill so many but that he doesn't have the freedom to do otherwise because it has already happened.

David L

From the rumbling, that statue was from the hardening of the warhammer during the liberio raid.

Brandon Gaines

Preface I have not read AOT so this isn’t a spoiler. Just a thought. I feel like AOT is gonna have kinda the same ending theme as Code Geass.

Æther Paradox

Dang no tearbending from Montana this episode. She’s desensitized at this point 😅

christian

You know a migraine is a common symptom of pregnancy. If Kenny & Montana were to have a boy the name Levi Letts sounds good to me LOL.

Raul Iggynashow

2024 is a long way off tho!

Peter Amet

I still find it just sad how it took the end of the world for Marley to realize what they were doing was wrong and they're the reason all this happened. Also worth mentioning that while the Marelyan general said he wouldn't commit the same mistakes again, that doesn't mean everyone else would follow. There's bound to be people that will hate Eldians more now

Angel Hernandez

Hange Raged!

Jonathan Chavez

Hange screamed out!

Jonathan Chavez

Hange pushed forward.

Jonathan Chavez

I will say not everyone has the same level of fighting spirit. Reiner hit his breaking point and powered through and Annie more just shut down. That and Levi still has a driving force pushing him. If you have nothing left in the tank they can't exactly make someone keep going.

Darthwin Wright

Eren never tried to prevent the future. The opposite is true. He did everything he could to reach the future he saw. The monologue and what he said to Ramzi is prove of this. He literally says to Ramzi "I wanted this" because he was disappointed that humans lived outside the walls and the world didn't match Armins book.

Danny Auerhahn

I would love a whole separate reaction to the lyric video for the ending song used in this episode. Everyone who reacts to it seems to feel very emotional when they hear the lyrics.

Andy

not random at ALL Montana's hair recently has me SIMPING around the house haha we're not sure why its beachy waves right now but I'm a big fan

Letts React

I believe so too. In the end, he is a slave to himself, or more like his future self? Something similar to that I guess. And you can see in his expression in that dark scene of his face, that he is not happy or at peace, he is just done.

Keyblade

So the best way I can understand how Eren is seeing the future but is unable to change it is this: In so many other works of fiction seeing the future changes it once you've seen it but not here. I believe that here Eren is seeing the future as it would be according to his seeing it meaning that it already takes into account any decisions he would make to try to stop it. He can make no changes because the future he is being shown already takes into account everything he will do to try to stop it.

KeanuofRivia

so random but like Montana's hair looks so good idk if its the wave the highlights .

NOT-ME YOU

The start of this episode is one of the most bleak, heartbreaking 11 minutes of anime I've seen. I've read the manga, and still watching that scene made my heart sink.

Angelia Dark

Def the first thing I looked at closer when editing, such an important scene

Letts React

You guys should really analyze Eren’s words during his crying scene

bruhmingo

this! because of course, everyone would respect annie's decision to step back. however, we can't act like annie stepping down wasnt a wtf moment, especially when taking into account the trauma everyone has gone through.

gen

can't wait for the finale 🥹

gen

Technical there was a loop hole, Erin just didn't like what it meant to Historia and a few of her descendants. Keep in mind the whole world hates Marly, and there are even Marlians who disagree with there own government(which is why the owl was able to infiltrate. Someone helped him). Marly has enemies without and within, that's why Tybur needed Eren to attack and kill him and the world representatives. Even though they were cheering for Tybur, that's not the same as agreeing to what he says. They were on enemie territory after all. The world hates titans sure but the world hates Marly too. I believe the og plan of Zeke's, not the taking away of future kids, but the other part. Do a small test rumbling to show strength, then make alliances around the world so Paradis can grow. However they said in this plan, just to make sure the are safe until they grow to the strength the world had they would still need to pass down a titan to royal blood and her bloodline. Even refused to do this, and since he knew he wasn't going to do this he eventually decided the only OTHER choice is to kill them all. By attacking Marly when he did, with all the world representatives, he forced the world to solidify him and by extention Paradis, as the true enemy

Tracy Simmons

Yeah, even a 12 year old came up with a more reasonable plan than Eren. Like Gabi said, just use titans in concentrated strikes to target the military bases. Mass genocide of the entire planet is a selfish solution- he's doing it because he wants to, not because it was the only option available.

Hannah N

The soundtrack on that last action sequence was perfection 😭

Danny C

One nice detail in the Hange scene is, that in the song they sing: "Bis dieser heiße Wind unsere Flügel nimmt" which translates to "Until this hot wind takes our wings". This is beautifully symbolic since Hange's cape started to catch fire and burn. I also loved the reunion with the other scouts after she died. It basically confirms that they are actually watching, like Hange mentioned before, and also Erwin always mentioned.

Keyblade

Yeah, I kind of enjoy that we started off thinking Reiner, Bert and Annie are the worst and bloodthirsty killers and now... everyone is kind of the same boat (haha). I guess it's the end of the world, great destruction is coming and more people are dying every minute they lose so it really puts all the old grudges in perspective and anyone who's coming to fight, they come to fight. Anyone who doesn't want to, no time to do anything but send them off

fr0st

WOW this was so worth the wait!! Huge thank you to both of you for such amazing discussion and analysis. There’s so much to unpack from every angle, which is why I love this story so so much. I’ve seriously had one woman discussions in my car I shit you not. It’s so cool seeing those discussions play out with two people whose opinions I respect so much. Can’t wait for the finale!!!

JennatheBreadQueen

I disagree with Kenny about there being no way to save the Island when there was a plan to save Paradis. The 50 year plan with the limited rumbling to take out the joint military forces of the world powers would demonstrate to the world that going to war with Paradis would be a costly endeavor both financially and physical allowing Paradis to both open up economic trade with other countries and improve their non titan technology. The number one reason why this plan wasn't followed through was because of the two key figures needed for it. Eren and Zeke were both genocidal monsters who had their own separate agenda.

TheBannerofHomuraAkemi

Wow... I... actually never noticed that. I was so caught up in that whole sequence, I guess, that I never really stopped to think about the words instead of taking them at face value.

Gestrid

And it'll probably make YouTube less upset, too. Less to worry about with fair use, maybe.

Gestrid

Damn...that was absolutely FANTASTIC!!! Ive missed AoT just on the phenomenal soundtrack alone. But to add my take on a couple things... Erens choice of freedom for the gang. One of yall mentioned "but hes trampling the world, so not really free is it?" (rough paraphrasing) But eren gives ZERO shits about the worlds freedom. The ONLY people he wants freedom for are HIS people, the citizens of Paradis. Theyve literally been kept in a proverbial cage their entire existence on that island. He has no desire to place ANY restraints on them ever again. (I think) Annie...I see a lot of yall jumping on kenny, but he DOES have a point. I think the error was in his word choice calling it "bullshit"...But I think its understandable to be thrown off a little by the "shes been through more than enough" line, like EVERY...SINGLE...ONE...of them havent!? (Thats also where he said "maybe its not a hot take" because obviously when you put more thought into it, its much more complicated.) But in that moment, before really processing it, i feel its understandable to have that thought process.

Jinchuriki87

I don't know if you remember, but she did specifically mention that her reason for wanting to return to Marley was because of her dad. Once she learned (in a post-credits scene when they were on the boat) that the Rumbling would flatten Marley before they could get there, she lost her motivation for fighting.

Gestrid

Falco sort of mentioned the same thing again in S4 during the Liberio raid. When he first emerged from the Armored Titan's hands after Eren's transformation, he went back down to check on Reiner and says, "his body should heal itself with the Power of the Titans. That is, as long as he has the will to live, but..." Reiner's "transformation" here is also just a hand-cocoon to protect Falco, because that was the only goal he had in mind. Just like Eren with the spoon.

camel

The dub wasn't delayed because of anything on Crunchyroll's end, unfortunately. The dub was delayed because, specifically for anime, licensees (Crunchyroll) need to get permission from the licensor (Kodansha) to release the dub. Side-note: This is probably why there's always a specifically defined delay between when the sub of, for example, My Hero Academia releases and when the dub releases a few hours later. They have to wait X amount of time after the broadcast in Japan finishes. They just have that ironed out in the contract beforehand. Since this was a special, though, the normal contract doesn't apply. And the licensor was dragging their feet on approving the dub.

Gestrid

King Floch Survived Season 4 Part 2! I’m a dub guy for pretty much any newer anime and it’s nice to see some other folks so excited for the dub as I was. We are in the minority, but dub has gotten so much better then back in the 80s/90s (besides Dragonball). I really hope we only have to wait a month for finale dub, because avoiding spoilers for 6 months was awful and basically impossible. Also Annie not having the motivation isn’t bullshit because you have to have the will to fight to transform into a Titan. Remember Eren in Season 1. They talked about him not having a clear goal in mind. You can’t force someone to have the Will to fight. And to be a Titan you have to have the will to fight or at least a goal in mind which she doesn’t at the moment.

Colton Piper

That’s what makes it even more sad for me, she really thinks there’s nothing else to live for so why even try. Her home and her father (assumed) are gone. And it’s not like they just let her give up, she thinks she has no use to them and forcing her to help would honestly do more harm than good. And believes they can do it. She’s what Reiner would’ve been if Falco didn’t convince him he had things to live for. And if Reiner was the one to stay instead of Annie, I’m sure we would all understand

Scar

I’ve always loved the revelation in this episode by eren that he’s not just doing this because he thinks he has to to save paradis. While obviously that’s part of it eren himself admits this episode that he’s also doing it because he’s disappointed humans exist outside the walls at all. He dreamed of a world of freedom endless nature and wonders that he and his friends and his people could explore at will and do anything with. When he learns the truth about the outside world he’s not just upset because the people out there are a physical danger to his people he’s disappointed because people being out there at all makes that dream he wants impossible because that world won’t be just his and his peoples.

Mortis

Well… I have consumed this media. And have greatly enjoyed. I don’t think anyone would be mad if you split chapter 1 and 2 for YouTube. Just more easily consumed.

Æther Paradox

The 0 motivation makes sense, I guess I thought Reiner would be even worse, and if he could keep fighting why can’t she, but that’s also a way too simple way to view it I now realize, it just felt odd she got this heartfelt waving send off when she like BRUTALLY murdered so many people, but they’ve all done crazy stuff now

Letts React

Good point about not comparing trauma, I hadn’t considered this angle, and it makes sense. I just was more like “they all have reasons to quit, but they’re the only hope left, why does she specifically get to not try to stop Eren,” but again ur right can’t compare trauma

Letts React

Also, we don't say it enough: thank you Kenny for burning the midnight oil to get this to us so quick and Montana for reacting as soon as she felt better (although absolutely fine for both of those things to be delayed in favor of sleep or feeling 100%). Y'all are the goats!

fr0st

It's fair to wonder. I hadn't considered it but I also just was like, what're they gonna do, MAKE someone who's a titan shifter fight by force? Literally nothing to do but acknowledge that she's got zero motivation to fight and move on with whatever weapons they do still have to fight with

fr0st

I love the scene of Eren apologizing to Ramzi so much, because it also reveals another facet of this whole thing: Another motive for doing this. As Eren says here, while protecting the people of Paradis is a part of why he's doing all this, it's only just that: a PART. He has another selfish goal underneath that. He says that, while he grew up with Armin, he read the stories that told him of what existed outside the walls. Such wonders, amazing sights that no one has seen before. Things that he wants to explore with his people, his friends. This is why he wanted to fight the Titans: to be able to leave the walls, and just see what's out there. And when he got his father's memories, when he learned the truth of the world outside the walls, he was DISAPPOINTED. He resented the fact that humanity existed and thrived outside the walls, he hated that there was a world out there that wasn't his and his people's. And he made a wish... that that world, would be wiped away. So his people could fulfill the dream he had of discovering and exploring the world that he had since he was a kid. This is why we get a flashback to Eren describing what those unknown wonders will be, just after we see the full scope of the rumbling, in this episode. "Water that glows like fire, fields of ice, sandy snowfields... ...to witness all that... was to know the greatest freedom the world had to offer." "WE'RE HERE! WE'RE FREE! We found it! Somewhere we can look out and see everything!" His projection of his younger self is seeing the trampled, devasted world as the empty treasure waiting for his people that he always dreamed of. Even outside of the conflict between Eldia and Marley, even outside of wanting to protect Paradis and his people, there's a part of him that wants this. Exactly this. And it was that scene with Ramzi and this scene of him finally seeing his "freedom" that made me fall in love with a VERY early line change the dub made, that I always disliked before. It became a line of accidental genius, since they wouldn't have known the result of the story back then. Back in Season 1, around episodes 10-12(I forget which one exactly), we have a scene of Eren in his house, in his mind. This is during the first time he intentionally transformed into a Titan, and has lost control. In this mindscape, he "hears" Armin questioning him on why he joined the scouts, why he even wanted to fight Titans in the first place. Why he was so intent on leaving the prison and cage of the walls behind, when they were the only thing keeping them safe from the Titans. Eren's response, translated from the original Japanese, is "because I was born into this world!" This was changed in the dub, and I was always annoyed at that, because of the fact that that phrase, "because I was born into this world", became a sort of arc phrase, and recurring theme, of the story. We hear many people espouse the same thing multiple times, all for different reasons, and it sucked that the very introduction of the phrase that would be revisited so much was changed. Now, though, I think I like the new dub line more: "Because the world beyond the walls is my birthright!" He absolutely, truly believes this, and that winds up tying in perfectly with his current mindset. It's amazing in hindsight.

ArcaneAnomaly

I love that we've had the bird motif for freedom throughout and now Falco, the character who has historically been both understanding, brave and selfless and the first to give the "devils" a chance from Paradis despite the brainwashing, is the one manifesting bird powers and gaining the freedom Eren's sought for so long

fr0st

They fed me all sorts of things, *shudder*. Low key human experimentation slash torture vibes from that, although she just brushes it off.

fr0st

Hadn’t considered the father thing, def a good point, I just thought that she didn’t have more of a reason than the others not to fight, though def also a good point not to compare traumas, people deal differently for sure and she may just have had no way to go on

Letts React

I'm not a manga reader, and I personally agree with Kenny: I think Eren is doing everything he can to give his friends their freedom without any fear of that freedom being taken away. But that also means he can't take away their freedom to try to stop him. And I think he does feel remorse for what he's done (or will do), as we saw at the beginning of the episode. But he can't give up on his beliefs. So giving his friends their freedom both goes along with his beliefs and allows them to stop him from doing something he wants to stop doing. There's a *lot* of stuff twisted up inside Eren that would be impossible to sum up in a single Patreon comment, but I hope you get the gist of what I'm saying.

Gestrid

It's interesting that with the reveal that the female titan's power is manifestation, we can go back to season 1 and identify the powers she got from all five of Marley's other titan shifters. She got her long-haul stamina from Pieck, her agility from Marcel, her hardening from Reiner, her ability to call pure titans from Zeke, and possibly the smokescreen she used to escape the trap in the woods from Bertholt.

Kyle MacDonald

This is why I said hot take, I feel like she def has reasons but like, they all do? Idk I was just confused why there wasn’t more pushback less than the decision itself

Letts React

The ending song is heartbreaking. Considering it’s from Mikasas perspective..

Izrail Gevorgyan

The Annie thing isn't bullshit, anyone there would jump at the chance to give any of the others a break. They aren't comparing trauma lmao. She had her father and that is all, she has no motivation to keep going for him, or the rest of the world and certainly not herself. She's not weak or thinks she has it worst than the others and they don't think so either, it's really actually symbolism for suicide and self harm. If anything, she thinks of herself as worse than the others, and that's why she would rather torture herself then fight with no motivation, and get anyone else killed. Give her a break

Scar

exactly

Josh Stewart

Yeah, also she's always been a misanthrope. She never fit in or cared about her fellow warriors (and actively hated Reiner) and was abused by her dad in the name of making her strong, only to attack him when she was stronger and regret it and vow to get back to him. In her mind, the literal one person she was motivated to save was her dad and he is most likely dead since Marley is flattened already, so she just has no motivation to even go on fighting anymore and completely lacks that save the world motivation that the others have. She's completely lost heart and also doesn't think she deserves to even be with Armin, a "good" person, and so just takes herself out of the equation (for now at least, who knows what's happening with the bird revelation)

fr0st

Could be effected by the strike though, could even be longer

Scar

A little clarification, since I also thought the sub version of the last line from Armin hits harder. In the sub the question Armin asks Eren is "In what way are you free?", which I think better highlights that the question is about how Eren, in his pursuit of freedom at all costs, has become a slave to his own visions of events to come and is therefore, in fact, not at all free.

fr0st

Annie has nothing left to fight for. Everyone else does. That's how I see it idk

Mark Romero

29:51 is so based lol

etec

Wow, give Annie a break, she not only lost all her motivation, she also had to just sit there for 4 years stewing on the hell she caused, but to come back and have everyone understand and treat her like that can't be easy for her either. She doesn't feel like she can stand next to them.

Josh Stewart

Levi is now officially the last surviving member of the Scout Regiment from episode one.

Kyle MacDonald

I interpreted the Annie thing as her motivation was literally to get back to her dad, which is not a thing anymore and she has no motivation to fight anymore. You can't make someone do something if they don't have any motivation to anymore.

fr0st

Kenny going plus ultra to still get us this today!!!!!

Jinchuriki87

Nice!

Trav

The dub, they didn’t comment on. But if it’s of any help, I’m assuming the final episode won’t take so long to dub. They wouldn’t wanna waste hitting the iron when it’s hot. Especially for the last material of the series.
