I think the dub had a bit of a mistranslation to say Shinso has to ask a question to activate his quirk. But in reality, as long as someone responds to his dialogue, whether it's a question or not, he can always activate the brainwashing.

I would still note that its good to not take dub dialogue word for word cause it will end up confusing you at some points. Not to take away from the enjoyment of the show but it does cause confusion at times. I had some experiences with that when I was younger watching anime dubbed

2023-09-03 15:07:03 +0000 UTC@Toua77 To try to summarize my original comment subs can obviously be mistranslated. Less of a likelyhood if you are watching from a proper source. From my experience of watching anime for majority of my life since I was a kid dubs can be good and you can enjoy them if done good enough but you have quite a bit more translation issues with dub opposed to watching subs. I try not to be an annoying anime sub elitist or whatever its called. I just think for the sake of understanding, and I personally like subs voice acting overall (just my preference though), sub is generally a lot better. Its not that subs can't be mistranslated its just from all of my experiences dub does a lot worse about it.

2023-09-03 11:43:00 +0000 UTCAlso welcome to the grand shonen anime tradition, Montana, of 1v1 fights which have extended flashbacks showing the characters' motivations, sad backstories, and what they are fighting for! I appreciate that out of most shonen series, Naruto and Deku are the ones who have tons of empathy for their opponents after the fact, even if they had to do what needs to be done in defeating them. It's an impressive person who can turns defeated enemies into kind of friends afterwards.

If they immediately infodumped a whole bunch of the class's stories on you it would be really difficult to keep them straight. We start off with the core character and his struggle, add in a childhood bully/rival, add a couple more frontrunners in the class to introduce their strengths, and then an actual attack to introduce the side characters and their powers, and now the tournament arc to do a bit more of a dive into backstories. Really excellent pacing. Any other media with this many characters would get confusing really quickly.

2023-09-03 02:31:28 +0000 UTCThey have clarified in the past that they both have auditory processing issues that makes it really difficult, if not impossible, to watch subs so it's not a preference thing so much as the only way they can reasonably watch and react. I prefer subs but dubs are not terrible these days so no big deal, as long as you're getting to enjoy the media

2023-09-02 20:34:12 +0000 UTCLegitimate question, do you think subs can't be mistranslated? Cause this issue is not exclusive to dubs. There are a couple of reasons to prefer subs over dubs, but this seems like you're reaching here.

2023-09-02 18:54:07 +0000 UTCOne of the many issues with dubs. They mix stuff up and don't do correct dialogue. Shinso does NOT require a person to answer a question. Its simply just them responding to him. Nothing at all to do with a question or answer. Would have been better to do sub which is the original dialogue and its not as confusing. The dub here isn't terrible for MHA but dub in general is just bad, especially at getting things correctly translated over into correct dialogue. Not my preferred experience of anime but I can't do anything about changing your minds.
