I feel bad for Hunter.

Check the opening to Eclipse Lake

as the show progresses everything belos related turns more into a nightmare, like his storyline and the storyline of those he's involved with is horror stuff when you think about it without the contrast of the fantasy world and the cute jokes and the animation style. i really like that, it literally gets worse the more they dive into it and belos becomes more and more the antagonist, from a detached emperor behind a mask to a person luz has spoken to nicely and trusted in and also fellow human. and yes, he killed his brother, whose name you don't know yet, because as he saw it, wild magic corrupted and hurt his family, so he made his brother again. his older brother, into a child he could control. but over and over, the copy would rebel or would question things or would be corrupted, just like his brother did, and belos wouldn't like that so. another copy. always trying to make a version of his brother that would be just like belos wanted, but then that wouldn't be his brother. so another copy. nightmare stuff.

Never realized this but after rewatching with y’all, the shadow on Luz’s face when they first enter Belos’ mind is very reminiscent of The Collector’s. Interesting.

Melanie Meadows

Fun fact about one of your theories too. You said maybe the emperor thinks he went to hell. The original pitch for the show was more darker and horror driven and had Luz going directly to hell. Boiling isles is just the Disney pg version

Suplee215

it literally is a hollow within a mind lol

oh tru

Your talk about fundamentally evil makes me wonder if you guys have seen the alignments in D&D. If you google it, you'll find lots of examples but it's basically about a character being either law-abiding or chaotic verus good and evil. That may be a better way for you to express what you think someone like Ryuk or the Collector are on that scale

To clarify, Kenny, Eda's hair is grey and dark grey, Hunter's is blonde so definitely not the same colors in the highlights and lowlights. Also Montana was correct that the trembling hand is because he cares about Flapjack and he's watching another bird palisman crumble in his hands and it scares him.

Narrator: they were in fact not ready

For the majority of this episode I was holding my breath. Poor Hunter both Luz and Hunter need therapy after this. How they managed to have dark imagery and get away with it, usually in animation not aimed at adults they have to be more creative but still kinda graphic. I'm impressed I've seen stuff like this before but really cool to think about. Have a close look at the pictures behind Hunter and Luz it tells a story.

Catradora fan

Absolutely dying at them zooming in on the first frame only to have it literally show a zoomed in view of the picture on the side full on. Amazing xD

fr0st

Well he’s the abused blond kid. We all love the abused blond kid

Big K

Hold on. Montana, did you just compare yourself to Belos’s brother, your dad to Belos and Kenny to the witch? Damn that sucks if so. Btw there was a lot more than 5 grimwalkers. At least a dozen

Big K

In response to what you said about the Collector being 2D similar to how Luz was in 2x10, I just thought I’d mention the mysterious whispering voice that was in the background of the In Between realm. Like when Luz asks if anyone can hear her, the voice says, “Yes.” And at one point in the subtitles on Disney+ it says, “Noceda.” Or at least this used to be in the subtitles, idk if they took it out. Anyway, back when that episode aired I guessed it was the Collector. We only knew their name from the credits of 2x08, but something about the whispering voice reminded me of the little bit of dialogue we got from the Collector.

Jenny D

Kenny: How do you just make a person? *Horde Prime has entered the chat*

Jenny D

To your point about Philip killing his brother because he’d been seduced by a witch, I think this is exactly what happened and I think when Belos tells Hunter that “wild magic destroyed our family” he truly believes that to be true. We know that the brother was fascinated by magic (staring in awe at the witch doing fire magic, following them to the demon realm, falling in love with a witch) and that goes against everything the puritans believed. Belos also said to the Collector about the grimwalkers that “it hurts every time he chooses to betray me.” And we know Hunter has a deep-seeded interest in wild magic. I think the betrayal Belos is referring to is the grimwalkers developing a love for magic, and Belos kills them when he finds out. I think he’s trying to create his idea of the perfect version of his brother: one that hates magic as much as he does.

Jenny D

Hunter freaking out about not being able to go back to Belos reminds me SO MUCH of Adora at the end of 1x02 when she realizes she turned against the Horde, at least with their initial panic of not knowing where to go. And I think there’s a few reasons for why their reactions after that initial panic were different. First, Adora had hours/a whole day to process the Horde being evil, and that time was mostly spent in a neutral or positive way (walking through the woods and attending her first party). Meanwhile Hunter’s only had a few minutes to process his entire worldview being turned upside down, and all of those minutes were spent fighting for his life. Second, Adora had people around her that she’d already started to like and trust, while Hunter hadn’t yet had time to realize that the owl house residents were possibly not the enemies he’d been viewing them as. And third, as far as we know Adora was never subjected to the kinds of abuse we know Hunter was. He’s actually an interesting mix of Catra and Adora in that way. He’s the teen prodigy/golden child, mentally and emotionally manipulated into believing the propaganda of the organization he was raised in, but he also suffered a lot of the kinds of abuse that Catra did. I guess what I’m saying is that Hunter is Catra and Adora’s long lost son.

Jenny D

So when Hunter got…absorbed, he was still holding Luz’s jacket, and she had a bunch of glyphs in the pockets. You can see some of them fly out when she tosses him a sleeve to try and pull him back. So he used a plant glyph to get back out of there, I think Jack and the Beanstalk style.

Jenny D

Kenny: What’s that one? Montana: Which one are you pointing at? Kenny (not knowing he’s pointing at the brother’s dead body): The dead center.

Jenny D

Oh no, there was way more than 5 golden guard masks. Someone counted back when the episode aired and iirc it was like, 16 masks? And that’s just the ones we can see. That particular pathway could have been longer.

Jenny D

Hearing the Collector recite their poems always reminds me of the secret coded message poems! Season 2 (so far): Seething seas and puppet strings He no longer dreams of kings As above rush darkened [skies] Season 1: Two witches torn apart, now alone Two hearts of stone A curse of feathers and mud A betrayal of blood

Jenny D

The thing the brother was giving Philip as a child is a wooden mask the brother was carving for him! Emphasis on the word carving. Also, if you look closer at the memory of the witch leading them, they’re doing fire magic, the brother looks impressed, and Philip looks scared.

Jenny D

It took me way too many watch throughs to understand Luz’s, “That’s not Spanish,” line. I initially thought she was referring to what King had said and I was like, no he was definitely speaking Spanish. Finally I realized she was referring to the code she had used to spell Eda’s name (echo delta alpha) that he then replied to in Spanish.

Jenny D

One of the reasons this is my favorite (non-Lumity) episode is because it shows just how creative the crew got after learning about the third season being cut really short! The memories in the background basically tell a whole second story! And because it’s in the background I think they were able to get away with revealing a lot of darker details that they might not have been able to show if Philip’s backstory had gotten a proper episode! I mean, dude literally cut up his own ears so they’d look pointy, and with the same dagger that he’d used to kill his brother!

Jenny D

Ok so now that we’ve gotten the official grimwalker reveal I can tell you guys something you missed in those book pages back in 2x09! While most of the ingredients were from things that only exist in the Boiling Isles, one of them was “bone of ortet” and ortet is actually a real life Latin word that means “the original plant from which the members of a clone have descended.” So in this case, instead of a plant, Belos needed a bone from someone he wanted to clone. His brother! Also, in the last scene of 2x12, when Philip is walking through the cave, there’s a background shot of a picture on the wall that kind of resembles the grimwalker book pages, like an earlier diagram attempt, and beneath it is a pile of human-sized bones! So when people ask where Philip’s brother is, that’s where I point to. This show is super dark in the background!

Jenny D

Just on the topic of this episodes title I’m pretty sure that “Hollow mind” is actually just a reference to the video game “Hollow Knight” since kids Belos’ mask looks similar to the playable character ghost- and some of the grimwalker details are kinda similar to a story aspect of that game Regardless highly recommend that game, great story and if this episode was having references to it I can’t blame the crew cause I’d love to reference it as well

Kathleen Joyce

Idk why, but I’m almost too nervous to watch! This is easily one of my favorite episodes of the whole series, definitely my favorite non-Lumity episode!

Jenny D

I've waited 9 months for this singular incredible reaction alone. I feel like a pregnant woman finally getting her baby and this is that baby. Thank you guys for all your amazing work! Can't wait for the upcoming episodes!

Jade

The way this episode gave me a panic attack the first time I watched it...

Alex S F

Btw, in Eclipse Lake there’s a scene with Belos where we see a book on the ground next to a golden guard mask showing how to make a grim walker

Angel Hernandez

The Genocide Train

Darthwin Wright

In the episode where Luz and Lilith went back in time to meet Phillip, there's a scene that Kenny paused on that shows some informatiom about grimwalkers and kenny noticed. Im guessing you forgot but if you go back and view your recording again you can receive more information about the grimwalkers!

Blacklung

One thing to remember here is you guys saw grim walker recipes before and didn't know what they were for. You assumed it was how belos became so powerful but that was fbe recipe for making Hunter and other grim walkers.

Suplee215

This episode made me freaking terrified if belos and love how amazing this show is with getting its metaphor and theme through and its a such a relative topic. This really establishes Belos as a representative of the patriarchy, religious fundamentalism and all those issues and the show been all about learning not to confirm and be yourself and the problems with uniformity. Got a bit uncomfortable at times but I think it's done in a way that really hits home. While Horde Prime had similar themes the small part of reality that belos is drawn from makes him so scarier to me

Suplee215

He's all in on genocide!

Callum Ringsy

This episode is my favorite in the whole series, and I'm so honored you used my question for it 😭 Belos is a fascinating villain and I love that he got an episode like this to shine, because that man's mindset is so effed LOL. Nobody double downs like Philip Wittebane! xD Can't wait to watch the rest of the series with y'all! Also! Fun fact! Belos's eyes are different than everyone else's. His are a flat blue color, while everyone else in the show has shades and depth and white bits. Just a fascinating detail, I find :3

Callum Ringsy

Belos doesn't have any motive on getting stronger or extending power, his plan is literally just to murder a large population because they're different. A nasty bigot.

Nerains

I don't know why, but I have a massive crush on Hunter...

King Katerina

love all your commentary on this episode! it's one of my all time favorites from this show and recent cartoons in general. also just want to point out that Belos definitely got rid of more than 5 grimwalkers before Hunter. In the hall with the broken masks you can count at least 15 I believe.
