Guest Artist of the Month | Untitled Finished Piece by SilkyNova

So hi, I’m Nova! I’m a black transmasc artist living in the United States. I first stumbled upon SDJ and eventually Snaccpop around 2022 after a friend talked about the current demo at the time, and I was instantly drawn in by his friendly charm, his voice, and how comforted I felt playing the visual novel. I think for a solid month I would play and daydream about the demo daily. I struggle with anxiety and depression on my day-to-day, so for the past two-to-three years I had used Jack and co as a coping mechanism—I try to doodle him or a Snaccpop character daily to feel productive. It helps me a lot to picture Jack cheering me on with every drawing I make, good or bad.

For this piece I wanted to I wanted to give the effect that Jack has trapped his unwitting rivals in the tv scape with him—who knows what he plans to do to keep his sunshine? Everyone is looking different directions, trying to figure out where they are, but Jack is focused on the viewer. I got the idea mostly from looking at images of broken tvs stacked on top, which seemed ominous. So in here there’s a giant VHS tape and the numerous tvs stacked on top of each other, a couple broken, but most of them on. The hardest part was the line art, always the line art. I usually draw my characters in a basic angle out of fear of it turning out wrong, but I wanted this to be a bit more out of my comfort zone, even though it’s not too dramatic.

After all, how are you to get better if you don’t try?

I don’t think I captured the image exactly like I wanted, but it was still fun to figure out how to draw characters at an angle I rarely do. Also, if you look closely enough I’m sure you can spot two certain cherubs among the tvs! Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this drawing.
