Xena Warrior Princess 5x14 Reaction

Comments

Honestly, if you were to rewatch it, I would totally be there for it. I don't know what I am going to to do when I don't get to see your reactions to my favorite show...

I've always loved this episode. When I was younger I was always lost wandering the books and stories of ancient myths, and Athena was always one of my favorite of the Greek gods. So I was surprised that it took until Season 5 to finally meet her, and shocked that she was an antagonist. But once the Season was finished I quickly got over that when I realized how fantastic Paris Jefferson was in the role. As always it's good to see mama Cyrene again; who's now gets to be a grandma. On a side note, my husband and I met Paris and Musetta at the Xena convention this past January; I left with the impression that they are both genuinely friendly and fun people, which is cool. I mean you never know. Frequently it seems hear negative things that happened behind the scenes in a production, or learn about what people are like in person and it leaves a bad taste my mouth for the entire production. But from what I can tell it seems Xena seems to have escaped all that (of you don't count Kevin Sorbo into the mix).

Nice to see more WLW representation with Athena and Ilainus even if they have to be the villains of the episode. But if the network has their way that’s all it would have been. Just a side WLW ship. Fortunately the creators/cast/crew never agreed. They may keep flinging love interests at either one of the lead characters but that’s only a straightbaiting tactic. It keeps the network happy. Don’t worry about it. Kassidy. It’s harmless. It does not do anything to damage our main ship. It couldn’t. They were too much on our side.

Gabrielle’s character development is half the rewatch value of the show to be honest. Gabrielle’s quirkiness and awkwardness makes her such an endearing character. She never loses that about her. Sure, it lessens as she gets older and faces much more serious situations in her evolution and a lot of that adorkable attitude dissipates... but it never fully vanishes. It’s one of the main reasons I love her. She’s always got that resilient spring in her step no matter what she goes through. Her emotional strength is by far the greatest characteristic of her nature. Especially when dealing with all the terror and trauma of Hope and ‘The Rift’, where she fluctuates from downright grief-stricken to unusually enthusiastic. I do have the theory that that’s because she is probably manic-depressive and without realizing it, displays the traits of one who is suffering with Bipolar Disorder. And I have a lot of logical reasonings to back that theory up. But nevertheless, it’s her personality that makes her lovable. Whether blatant or nuanced, the amount of substance I pick up from Gabrielle’s development alone - nevermind Xena - is honestly what kept me attached to the show for as long as I have been and continues to hold my attention, loyalty and respect. You know, they always say Xena would be nothing without Lucy Lawless. But the same is true with Renee O’Connor. I credit the writing of Gabrielle’s individual storyline and evolution to Steven L. Sears... but everything I love about Gabrielle’s personality is all Renee’s handiwork and she does not get enough praise for it.

Also, we all know who the main ship of this show is, so i actually don't mind when they occasionally indulge in a side ship...as long as it makes sense. Xena & Ares, Gabrielle & Aphrodite, Gabrielle & Ares, ...i like quite a few. Also regarding your rewatch comment. I think you would enjoy a rewatch just as much as your original watch because you would pick up on so many details that didn't stand out much on first watch.

Very entertaining episode, I quite like it! Love seeing Gabrielle leading armies now, she's such a badass :)

So Zeus is dead, and the end of the Gods is apparently near. (Except for Ares, who shows up to fight them in the 1940's and the 90's) All because of Eve's birth. Gotta say, the whole thing is pretty intense for a show that basically revolves around the existence of the Gods as a background story. It makes me nervous lol. Anyway, Xena's plan worked. Whipped Ares is hilarious. Glad Xena brought Eve to meet Cyrene even if half of Amphipolos is now dead. And yeah, Lucy definitely bounced back and then some!

Really like this episode! Paris Jefferson did a phenomenal job as Athena. The show and she were able to add so much character and empathy is such a short period of time. I also love the parallelism of Athena & ilainus and Xena & Gabrielle relationship and how much context it added into the decision making and understanding of the other's motive. Just really great episode all around

Athena did appear once in Hercules, albeit played by a different actress, and in her goddess of wisdom aspect, not war. ... I don't want to be negative, but I have a lot of problems with this episode, in no particular order: 1) Ares already has many children. That's not mythology, it's canon for this universe. So he already HAS the "immortality" that this would bring. 2) Athena could kill Eve in seconds, and Xena wouldn't be able to do anything about it. In fact, Athena could kill XENA in seconds, and Xena wouldn't be able to do anything about it. There's no good explanation offered for why this isn't happening. Not that I WANT them to kill a baby, but... 3) Xena's line about Zeus "just clinging to power" is irritating. No, Xena, Zeus was trying to save not only his own life, but the lives of his entire family, including all of his own children. This is basically the same motivation as what Athena's should logically be,but the show refuses to say so, instead having them say it's about mortals needing the gods. Athena SHOULD have told Xena to stuff it when she spoke so dismissively of her father, I think. 4) Athena couldn't heal Ilainus' wound? I'm not sure I buy that, but surely Athena could have instantly whipped up some ambrosia and saved her that way. ... Anyway, my favorite parts of this one are, first, Musetta Vander (Ilainus), who has been in a bunch of genre productions, and seeing her face Xena may have been a fan wish fulfillment for some, especially if they saw Oblivion. You may recall her as the She-Mantis from Buffy's first season. And, second, Xena admitted that she "felt something." I think it, and her interaction with Gabrielle afterwards, are really interesting and compelling.
