I've tried to see if Kal is based on any actual deity, but I haven't found any, which isn't a problem, but is a little unusual. It was nice that the chakram got an origin. ... The sais are cool, but I can understand your preferring Gabby's former weapon; she had a very competent staff. (HtLJ joke.)

The chakram sort of represents Xena. Well… I’d say it represents the both of them. Xena and Gabrielle. Now the Dark chakram has merged with the Light chakram, it’s become the Yin-yang chakram. Which means Xena is now balanced as both opposing sides to her Self have merged together too. She’s reconciled with her dark side enough to use it for The Greater Good. You could say Gabrielle represents not just Xena’s light, but her balance too as she directed her back to her dark side. Not Ares. Even though it is Ares that represents her dark side. But of course Xena doesn’t need to be dark. She just needs to remember her darkness because that’s what brought her to her light. This episode is very symbolic of Xena and Gabrielle’s journey both as individual characters and as a character dynamic. Both these things are inextricably intertwined now. This is unlike any other WLW story in TV art/entertainment - explicitly canon or otherwise - because they don’t ever have the narrative wrap around the queer characters and their relationship. They don’t really ever have the WLW representation and the storytelling involve with each other to the point where they evolve each other. This is why Xena is a better WLW love story than anything actually explicitly canon is or ever will be. They knew what they were doing.

2025-02-01 09:50:36 +0000 UTCI love that episode so much. I love the overall theme and message of balance and I love how they explore it. It’s my favourite episode of Season 5 and not a lot of fans like Season 5 but I like it. Even though it’s my least favourite season of XENA, I still like it because it’s still XENA. Anything that’s XENA I’ll be passionate about. Why wouldn't I be? I wrote about what the episode means to me much more in-depth elsewhere but I really just appreciate this episode and what they do with the development of the lead characters. This episode in particular really addresses the deep emotional crisis going on with the lead characters. Both Xena and Gabrielle have a development in this episode. Gabrielle becomes a full-out warrior and Xena finally reconciles with her dark side and becomes balanced. And they play it just as much emotionally as they do physically. It’s a TOP 10 episode to me because I learned a lot from it, it contains my favourite scene in the show and it’s a fundamental part of my character study thesis.
