PATREON ONLY: Xena Warrior Princess 4x15 Reaction

I can't describe the horror I felt when I saw that ugly wig Gabrielle had at the end of the episode. It genuinely traumatized me. That being said, I enjoy Alti so much better on subsequent watches than the first time. She's such a fun character.

The one where Xena & Gabrielle...canonically Soulmates.

Okay, so they may not be canon lovers textually. But they are canon soulmates textually. The show established that they would be together for eternity. Even if it wouldn’t always be in a romantic sense. Like that is ever more important than the former. It isn’t. They are each other’s person fulfilling specific relationship roles for each other time and time again. That to me is a much stronger statement of love, devotion, commitment and intimacy than anything romantic. And therefore, to me, that’s what makes it even more romantic than anything explicitly made to be romantic. It’s just such a profound dynamic and the addition of them being literal soulmates doesn’t hurt the show at all. In fact, I’d say it makes it even more valuable and compelling to watch. Talking about another show that involves their queer characters in the main narrative rather than forces them to fit into a narrative just not meant for them. Well. Not “involves”. Again - they ARE the narrative because it’s a queer narrative in a queer show.

‘Between The Lines’ is easily the best episode of the India arc for me. Just the exploration of their future lives and all that that entails. I’ve said this before but once you get to the India arc and specifically the episode ‘Between The Lines’ the “soulmates” and “tree in the forest” stories Gabrielle narrates make total sense. I mean if you never really saw them that way before - you pretty much have no choice but to do so now. Everything prior to the India arc gets recontextualized to “it’s Xena and Gabrielle” Thank you, Steven L. Sears. It is so wackadoo that Xena in her immediate next life as Arminestra is the Mother of Peace and Gabrielle in her immediate next life as Shakti is a Warrior Prince. But also it’s so fitting at the same time because you see this is the trajectory of their paths in the show. You actually see them role-reverse or swap over roles and make the transition into becoming each other. But at the same time - it’s so insane that they get to find out this information before any of that happens. Steven L. Sears is like the Xenaverse’s Albert Einstein. He is both absolutely insane and absolutely genius. Especially because he chose not to make this dynamic romantic even though they were the opposite gender. One parallel I’ve noticed from ‘Sins Of The Past’ and ‘Between The Lines’ is that instead of Xena being distracted and stuck to the ground by Gabrielle’s failed attempt to fight back and protect herself, Gabrielle (Shakti) is now the one being distracted and struck to the ground by Xena’s (Arminestra) interrupted attempt to kill. It’s almost a shot-for-shot parallel to show that they’re rediscovering their soulmate connection all over again. I wonder if it was intended. 🤔 Another thing to ask Steven L. Sears about. What their reincarnated lives and karmic cycle show us is that even before Xena and Gabrielle knew each other in this lifetime, they were already together in the past life before that just as they will also be in their next life as Aminestra and Shakti. That’s what Naima meant by what she told them. That they have been, are and will be connected by their very soul. No beginning and no end. It’s extremely profound. You know… if you believe in that sort of thing. I always have. In no small part thanks to this episode I’m sure.

"Care Bear, Stare!" came to mind when Gabrielle and Xena used their force beam thingy to blast Alti back into their time. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the episode.
