"I'm blue, da ba di da ba da." This episode never feels like it's really happening, like it never feels quite right, but that may have been the point. It still works okay. And, of course, is meant to lead into the next series of episodes.

2024-12-28 16:06:07 +0000 UTCIt’s “the mission” VS “the love” Like most hero stories where there is a love interest involved, the hero struggles with the fact that their love can be targeted and hurt by their enemies or just villainous or selfish people. But with Xena - that anxiety is even worse because she used to be evil and those evil tendencies still live within her however buried deep down they are and the darkness can take over at any moment and therefore SHE could be the one to hurt Gabrielle. So she has these push and pull moments where she either holds on to Gabrielle with an iron grip or she just fucking abandons her and Gabrielle risks everything to follow and join up with her again because she’s so invested. What’s most striking about this though is that if you DON’T interpret Xena and Gabrielle as lovers or at least romantically involved with each other, that can actually seem quite abusive. Like some type of Stockholm Syndrome. The only reason it doesn’t seem that way is because they’re interpreted as already being together in that way. Otherwise - there’s a lot of issues that can be perceived from the way both these characters treat each other. If you just think of them as best friends with a familial-ship or mentor-ship between them, that’s not as easy to watch because they’re far too intense and intimate with each other. But if you think of them romantically and furthermore - soulmates - that makes much more sense because it’s not just them that’s doing it out of their emotional attachment to each other. It’s also a fate/destiny thing going on. So it’s just so much easier and simpler to just interpret them as a love story because that looks and feels like the natural progression. A lot less issues.

Props Xena & Gabrielle have really beautiful and complicated feelings for eachother and they are constantly torn between how that aligns or doesn't align with the greater good that they want for eachother. You were right on that Xena has so many different feelings for gabrielle as a best friend, mentor, lover, side kick...and these feelings don't always agree with eachother. Poor Xena lol

2024-12-28 01:02:19 +0000 UTCAh… the India arc. I waiting for this. Cue lots of cuddling, bathing and massaging in these episodes for no apparent reason than just wanting to do that and the intimacy of trusting each other to allow each other to do that because that’s what people that are actually in love do even if they’re not a couple yet. If this is not what you call “romance” then I don’t know what to tell you. At this point plausible deniability is thin. So thin you need to think harder to come up with something to deny it than you ever will to just allow it. We’re way past the point of platonic being plausible. You don’t need excuses for what’s in front of your face. If they’re depicting it as a romance, then it’s a romance. It’s not just the intimacy. It’s the story you get alongside the intimacy. That’s what’s so special. The fact all of this romantic/sexual subtext just happens all the while the narrative continues.

2024-12-28 01:00:05 +0000 UTCThis is when the yin-yang representation that has been bubbling under the surface in the show starts to be made explicit visual symbolism. They show you Xena and Gabrielle sleeping on a bed designed as the yin-yang ☯️ symbol, visually depicting them as the human representation of yin-yang and each other’s balance in the theme of it. Oddly enough, Gabrielle here looks feminine for taking up the masculine side of the symbol, and Xena here looks masculine for taking up the feminine side of the symbol. But then again, that’s just the nature of yin-yang. It is both all at once, and yet not so separately because both contain the seed of the other. That’s what makes it balanced. These characters are literally The Tao. The Way.

2024-12-27 21:58:43 +0000 UTCMan what a great episode, so much to unpack 😅 my favorite is probably the Yin Yang bed and how Xena doesn't sleep there next to Gabrielle to complete the symbol because she feels that the two of them together will lead to tragedy.. that's just one thing, there's so much more going on here 😅 I love it, a lot of banger episodes from now on
