Jacqueline Kim ( Lao Ma) she is amazing and the chemistry, great. Kim's stage presence, amazing. I always forget how powerful it is until I watch these episodes, I think I know partly what you're confused about as well, all will be revealed in a later episode, and that episode, Renee's acting chops shine through so much. The acting and some of the story writing in this series is some of the best

2024-09-09 21:38:51 +0000 UTCBeautifully put! Xena’s Dark period informing and influencing the Warrior Princess is the whole point. It’s about her learning to reconcile with her Dark and her Light rather than eliminating either. It’s about balance. That’s why the character resonates so highly.

For every ruthless & ambitious man that left his mark on Xena, there was also a brave & good-hearted woman who left hers. All of these experiences molded Xena, her darkness & her light, into who we see today.

You were like “I hate how freaking straight Xena is” I was like “Well… 👀.” I did say Xena is a canon bisexual character. Gabrielle - on the other hand is a bit more difficult to pin down when it comes to her sexuality. Steven L. Sears (the writer of pretty much all of Gabrielle’s character representation and development) believes her to be a comphet lesbian but you could interpret her as bisexual too. Neither one of them are straight. I dare say there is no straight female character in this entire show to be honest. At least no significant female character. This is a very queer show. It’s why we rallied so hard for you to react to it. And you haven’t disappointed so far although I do wish you’d have more commentary. Even if it’s just a few short lines. We like to hear what you think.

I couldn’t wait for you to get to ‘The Debt’ episodes because they’re so rich in Xena backstory lore. I also knew you’d pick up on the WLW vibes going on in it. I mean, I don’t know how anyone couldn’t with that underwater kiss. Certainly be prepared for more tricks like that to get WLW kisses past the censors. You clocked it quite early. Yes, ‘The Debt’ is indeed a love story between two women. But there’s much more depth to it than that. Lao Ma is Xena’s first mentor - and lesbihonest - first girlfriend. I mean you could say M’Lila was the first but I think because of the communication barrier they couldn’t really have much of a romantic relationship. Lao Ma, however, spoke to Xena in ways that Xena probably never recognized very well either, but there was no communication barrier. More like a bridge. If there was anyone even close to turning Xena around to Good in her Evil Xena era, it was the author of the book of the Tao Te Ching herself.
