Yeah, Aemond definitely tried to stop Vhagar. I mean, he shouldn't have started shit in the first place, but he didn't mean to kill Luke.

I don't know what he expected to happen when he decided to use his battle tested dragon to toy with Luke. Vhagar is the dragon of Aegon the Conqueror's sister wife, Visenya. Vhagar was one of the dragons that was used to conqueror Westeros. She's old as fuck and super experienced and he got her blood pumping so of course she isn't going to listen to him after that. Whereas Luke's dragon is just a baby and is not only reacting out of his own fear but his riders fear as well; he went into defense mode to try to protect them even though it horribly backfired.

The flashing dragon images with Rhaenyra were showing exactly the same for her and Syrax. They are so bonded that her dragon is feeling all the pain that she is going through in the moment.
