[August] Week 1 : Genesis

[Not so great flood]

As you might have heard in the recent community post my storage has suffered water damage. I've kept the NAS on the porch due to how loud it got. Unfortunately after a massive rain and an open window, the system was filled with water resulting in a breakdown. Due to the unique design of the case the mainboard was totally submerged and got fried.

Fortunately I've been able to swap out the MB with a new model and use spare parts to replace any components that may have come in contact with water and was able to rebuild my partition and get all the data back!

All my footage and music library is saved! ...for now.

To prevent such a dumb mistake from happening, I've replaced the industrial fans that were so obnoxiously loud to 80mm noctuas and since kept it indoors. I've also increased the number of parity drives from 1 to 2 as it is still unknown if the hard drives are safe to use long term. This will allow me to loose 2 out of 5 drives and still retain my data.

If any of you are running an UNRAID NAS and have experience I'd love to hear from you.

I've hooked up with TheParryGod again for some sweet cinematic shots. You may remember his work from the previous video. As before, all cinematic footage will be released on YT and the original files will be uploaded here on Patreon. I'm also looking into collaborating with VaatiVidya for lore and ZeroLenny to explain game mechanics.

[System upgrade]

I've made some software & hardware upgrades besides fixing my NAS. 

For software I have swapped out Vegas Pro 17's poor renderer to Voukoder, which resulted in ~1.8x faster renders with better results.

I've also installed an automatic proxy converter on my NAS for a proxy based workflow. Proxies are video files that have been converted to be faster to edit. My previous workflow used original 4K60fps files that are massive and laggy to work with. With proxies I can edit way faster and then swap out the files with the original for the final render.

For hardware upgrades, I'm planning on swapping my 3200g in my NAS into the 3900x from my main PC. I don't think the water affected the CPU but I'm not taking any chances. Plus, it will make proxies 4x times faster to create. The power draw bump is absolutely insane so not sure if this will work out.

For my main pc I'm going from the 3900x to the 5950x. Faster edits and renders(I'm expecting ~40% faster), and smaller and higher quality video files.
